kick ass better than z

Gonna check The Conjuring and Kick-Ass 2 soon. We ended up watching World War Z and enjoyed it for the popcorn flick it is. The CGI and effects work during the scenes in Jerusalem were dope. We were chowing down and appreciating it for what it is ... pure entertainment. Food was good too - roast beef / sweet potato / steamed broccoli / grilled & baked onion sides / beers / apple strudel for dessert. Shiiiiiit

Gravity




Gravity is an adventure that takes place 372 miles above earth and Director Alfonso Cuarón and an incredibly
talented SFX team go to great lengths to make the audience feel like they are part of the adventure.
The SFX and 3D in the film is seamless.This is immersive and involving 3D.Unlike gimmicky 3D in which you see
about 3 or 4 overhead shots of characters falling off a building,or a creature or ship rushes towards you.
Cuarón enwraps the audience with long views of the vastness of space and the beauty of Mother Earth.
Visuals are coupled with a soul stirring score,and we are immediately attached to the characters.

George Clooney as veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski is his usual charming,commanding,back to charming self,
but this is Sandra Bullock as Dr. Ryan Stone show all the way.She grounds the film with the characters personal
story of loss and steady persistence to try to reach point A to B to hopefully make it back to Earth.

I applaud writer Jonás Cuarón for providing surprises in a screenplay that could have been one note,the fact that he
includes so many symbolic moments that include,fatih,death,life, and evolution into a 90 minute time frame is worth high
praise alone.

Gravity is also a life affirming film,which includes making peace with the past but never forgetting it.
I hope someone is considering making this one of those 4D experiences at Madame Tussauds,well at least a
10 minute version of it.

Gravity is one of the best experiences i have had at the theatre ,and its also one of the best movies of the year.

Yeah - we're probably aiming to see Gravity (3D) on Thursday. I ended up winning a 2nd pair of passes for Machete Kills on Thursday ... but will probably end up checking it out in the near future. Like you said ... a fun guilty pleasure, and some T&A (Alba, Rodriguez, Vergara, Vega, etc).

Watched Kick Ass 2 at home a few days back. Didn't care for it too much. Preferred the original flick a few years back much better. This one felt kind of lame ... incorporating a bit of a Mean Girls feel to it with the high school vibe (but not as funny) ... and you realize how much of a shitty actor Christopher Mintz-Plasse is. He was funny in Superbad as "McLovin" ... decent as "Red Mist" in the 1st Kick Ass flick ... but kind of a joke here as "The Motherfucker". Also, I don't care to watch some cornball Mother Russia killing cops left and right. Gimme a break . The flick also needed more of Jim Carrey for comedic value given he's had chops dating back to the 80s.


Saw Gravity (3D) on Thursday evening and enjoyed it. Definitely one for the big screen, as others have noted. We brought our 3D glasses along and saw it for free (having won passes to the Machete Kills premiere). Good turnout for that flick ... there were 100 - 150 people in line by 6:15pm for the 7pm showing. Good turnout at Gravity ... place was about 80% full even though it's been out for a bit in wide release. Props to the director, Clooney and Bullock, and all the camera work, green screen usage, CGI & all that other shit ... it held our interest.

Watched Now You See Me on Sunday. Won a copy of the blu-ray / dvd combo pack recently. Enjoyed it at times, but wasn't as fulfilled as I'd hoped to be. But then again ... knew that going in from reviews I'd had on BGOL, other sites, and from the press. Bit too far-fetched, convoluted & make-believe. Fun visually though ... good pacing. Can't say it was boring, in that it never was. Enjoyed the scenes with the French bank the most (for those who've yet to see it).

Captain Phillips



Based on the events that took place aboard the MV Maersk Alabama in April 2009,the film
Captain Phillips is involving and intense even though most of the world including myself
knows how everything played out.

One of the things i liked an appreciated about the film is the fact that it shows us all sides of the story
from Phillips home life and concerns about the future of his children,to the Somolian pirates and how
they are rounded up and chosen to hijack ships,to the tactics used by the Navy and the Navy Seals.

Hanks is terrific as Phillips ,trying to remain cool calm and collected even though the situation is
bleak.He completely immerses himself in the role which makes it award worthy.
The first time actors who portray the pirates are good, Barkhad Abdirahman as Bilal Faysal Ahmed as Najee and
Mahat M. Ali as Elmi,but Barkhad Abdi as Muse, the hijacker leader is outstanding.He wont be tricked or wavered from his course even though it starts to become a futile one.

Director Paul Greengrass has created a mesmerizing thriller and one of the best films of 2013

Saw these in recent days ...


KEVIN HART - Let Me Explain - Short at around 1 hour, 15 mins. Cool to see the tour footage from various countries. Props to him and other comics like him who have done massive stadium shows (in this case Madison Square Garden). That's no simple feat. I preferred his prior flick from recent years ... had funnier moments, but there were some funny points here. He's not for everyone, that's for sure. Some love him, others hate him. I find the hyper / spazztastic stuff gets a bit tiring after awhile, but props to Kev' on his major international success in recent years. I respect anyone who is doing big things in their chosen craft.


Is This The End? - Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Wasn't sure the first 20 mins ... but it picked up well. Plenty of inside jokes with the cast members' various roles over the years (i.e. - Freaks and Geeks in the late-90s/early-00s or so on NBC for Franco & Rogen). I found Danny McBride the funniest in-house. As for the funniest scenes? The shit with the demon / exorcism / that whole shit had me rolling (don't want to spoil it for anyone - but it's in the latter half of the flick - funny stuff)

12 Years a Slave



A few hours after i watched 12 Years a Slave,a friend asked me if the film was upsetting.I told her yes
it was extremely upsetting and extremely brutal,but also very moving and hard hitting to the soul,and
that was putting it lightly because Director Steve McQueen and writer John Ridley dont pull any punches
in their adaptation of Solomon Northup's 1853 autobiography Twelve Years a Slave.

Deceived and intoxicated by two traveling entertainers,Northup awakens and finds himself in chains
and his 12 year nightmare begins.
McQueen and Ridley cover the inhumanity and degradation of slavery,how black men and women were
traded and bartered for as if they were cattle.How slave masters who were even considered "decent" ultimately
cowered to their own prejudices and bigotry.

Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup is outstanding as the man who refused to give into despair.
His performance is effective and then some especially in a key seen in which Northup at first steadfast
slowly resigns himself to his fate,it is truly one of the best acted scenes ever.
Lupita Nyong'o as Patsey, a slave on the Epps( Michael Fassbender outstanding ) plantation and an obsession
to Epps gives a heart wrenching first time on the big screen performance.
Kudos to Adepero Oduye as Eliza a woman who is also deceived into slavery
Paul Dano,Paul Giamatti,Sarah Paulson,are unflinchingly evil in their roles.Showing how Slave masters,
overseers,and traders were beyond dilusional to think that their brutality and degrading of fellow human beings was righteous and just.

It's been awhile since a film has generated so much discussion before and after a screening.It's a film that will stay with me forever.
One worthy of every award it has and will receive.It made me angry,sad,and it also made me reflect.
It's a powerful film,that greatly displays the triumph of the human spirit and its one of the best movies of 2013

Get ready for a Revolt in music.

The new cable channel from Sean "Diddy" Combs — the rap mogul's calling it the "ESPN of music" — hits the airways at 8 p.m. ET Monday.​

Think of it as MTV if The Real World or The Jersey Shore or Teen Mom never happened. All about the music, baby, in the form of performances, videos, news and documentaries.

Combs told USA TODAY in July that he wants Revolt to "bring kids back to television" in a world where the Internet reigns supreme. But taking a closer look, he knows the boundaries are really less clear — the channel will involve social media heavily and is intended to be available on multiple platforms such as smartphones, tablets and really anywhere you can currently stream media.

Revolt's content, Combs says, will be "highly curated" and won't be limited to certain genres.

"We're looking for greatness, we're looking for great stars, we're looking for people who have something to say. Our bar is extremely high. ... There are other places artists will be able to get exposure, but when you make it to Revolt you will feel you've been authorized."​

Comcast and Time Warner Cable will carry the channel from its launch tonight, reaching parts of most major cities.

Combs has been heavily involved with the promotion of the channel, even though he will not be a regular fixture in programming. He's posted Instagram videos, tweets and TV spots hyping up Revolt's debut.
