Prisoners

The most infinitely haunting and horrible tragedy that a family may endure is the disappearance and
abduction of a child.
In Prisoners Writer Aaron Guzikowski places us in the lives of two families going through the aforementioned
after their daughters seem to vanish into thin air.
Prisoners is a well woven tale ,that starts down a basic path that becomes more complex. A mystery leads to a secret,
which leads to another mystery.
Director Denis Villeneuve sets the right gloomy tone with torrential rains and gloomy skies, and the slow reveal
of a secret or brutal abuse someone has experienced.

The cast is terrific Viola Davis ,Maria Bello,Terrence Howard,Melissa Leo(completely unrecognizeable) and Paul Dano, but the standouts are Jake Gyllenhaal
as the twitchy and tatted Detective Loki who refuses to give up on the missing girls, despite protests from his captain
and how bleak the outlook may be.and Hugh Jackman as Keller Dover the father of one of the missing girls who's frustration
and anger leads him to seek his own type of investigation.

Some scenes are definitely not for the faint of heart, and the subject matter of children in peril may be hard for some to sit through.
At 2 and a half hours the film goes on a bit to long and could of cut at least 15 to 20 minutes.

Prisoners,is a gripping and intense mystery thriller, thats right up there with films like,Seven,The Vanishing, and Silence of the Lambs.
I expect for it to receive numerous award nominations.

Scale of 1-10 a 9

Rush

One of the main things i admire about the film Rush is its honesty
The honesty of the two men in the film on which it is based and their passion for Formula one race car driving.
Such passion and honesty was costly to James Hunt portrayed by Chris Hemsworth and Niki Lauda portrayed by Daniel Brühl
on and off the track, particularly when their honesty was sometimes brutal to the people they loved.
Director Ron Howard doesnt sugar coat the reality of being a race car driver, fully displaying the physical and sometimes fatal
tolls one may experience
The two leads are equally good ,fleshing out the egos, arrogance, humor and passions of the two men.

Howard does leave out some interesting facts about the two men,and focuses on their rivalry. He masterfully revs up the suspense and
holds the audiences attention with nail biting racing sequences, even though part of the audience like myself knows the outcome.

Sports films at times can be drawn out and boring but Rush has the right amount of everything and keeps the action
moving.

Thanks for the intel, JB. I've got Prisoners, Rush, and that new Sam Rockwell film on my radar. Especially Prisoners ... reading and hearing all the positive feedback the past week ... great to see so many strong reviews so far.

Thanks for the intel, JB. I won passes today for the DON JON screening tomorrow. It takes place at 7pm. We're hoping to check out PRISONERS when we get there. Not sure though ... as the 7pm show is in ULTRA AVX format, whereas the regular screening's a bit too late at 8:30pm (for a 2.5 hour movie). We're either gonna check out DON JON ... or possibly Elysium, We're The Millers, or Riddick :D

Won passes to Don Jon yesterday, and we checked out PRISONERS once there. Dope, as expected. As Joneblaze noted it a 9/10 ... we'd score it a strong 8/10 or slightly higher. Very well-acted (especially by Hugh Jackman) and the others (Howard, Davis, Leo, Gyllenhaal, Dano, etc). Kept reminding myself how much of a good actor Hugh Jackman is ... variety of roles over the years, and shit ... he's the same guy doing song & dance numbers for The Academy Awards or whatever the fuck, playing Wolverine in the action/superhero flicks ... playing more serious roles like that in Les Miserables, etc. He was very believable here in Prisoners ... movie had a good number of red herrings, and basically no sunshine. Plenty of bleak, overcast, gray & rainy shots ... totally set the mood. Some may find it a bit long at 2.5 hours (we had the tilt back seats w/ UltraAVX for good reason, lol) ... but yo ... grab some popcorn & watch the acting & pay attention to the story.

Right on, JB. Yeah ... it held my interest throughout, and like you said ... it'll be interesting to see/hear the dvd or blu-ray features in 2014. Only gripe I'm hearing from people is that it's a bit lengthy at 2.5 hours. I actually mentioned it to my mom via text the other day ... she's about 4 hours away, and she went and checked it out the next day with a friend and they both dug it. Mom noted she was impressed with Jake G. I asked what she thought of Hugh Jackman's role ... and she was unfamiliar with him. I was like, the fuck? Thought you knew who he was ... he's been around for years :D:lol:

Won movie passes for Parkland today. Screening takes place next Friday evening, which is kind of unique. Most screenings take place Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in lieu of Friday releases. Occasionally kids, 3D, and family-based films get Saturday sneak previews 1 - 3 weeks in advance. Should be a good one. Good cast ... screening's on Friday, Oct. 4th ... they noted they'll Fed Ex the double pass over.

This was a great film! Highlight text for spoiler ~~~~> Could you relate the connection of the maze to the story? What else have I missed from the story apart from kidnaping and recovering of little girls? Is there more to the story?

AtomAnt,

Yes - that angle was interesting. Movie also had some good red herrings. I was hoping for a bit more acting out of Paul Dano. He's a really good actor & was hoping for more dialogue from him. More dialogue would have made him even creepier.

I should have seen Prisoners. Instead I checked out Don Jon. At best it's a 5 on a scale of 1-10. While I like Joseph Gordon-Levitt as an actor it was obvious that he's new to directing and more importantly to screenwriting. Scarlett Johannson was hot as usual but the relationship between her and the main character never felt as significant as it should have though that was done intentionally and most of the other characters were barely on screen and when they were served no real purpose with the exception of Julianne Moore's character.

Thanks for the intel on Don Jon, CC. Yeah ... we had planned to check out the movie but it's nice to have options once you get there. We were running a bit late for the screener ... so there were already 200 people in line. So we just sat off to the side and waited for the 7:10pm Prisoners (while others went to the 7pm Don Jon). It's one of those mid-sized venues which is 3 levels (with 2 escalators in the buildings). Main floor box office ... 5 screens on the 2nd floor ... 4 on the 3rd. It was cool to see it in UltraAVX too ... seats tilted back ... larger screen and better sound ... more leg room (especially for a 2.5 hour show). Going to see Parkland next Friday ... smaller venue though (community theater) so hopefully we score some decent seats. Gotta love the pricing though - $0.00 =)

Ah it's interesting you say paul dano dialogue cos it was in a discussion with movie buffs they said this movie goes beyond fictional drama in that ****SPOILER ALERT HIGHLIGHT TEXT TO READ ~~~~> The directors deliberately hold back paul dano's dialogue for a reason they deliberately zoomed in on him when writing his name for the same reason they deliberately showed him with one eye in the cubicle for the same reason the wolvering kept saying to him TELL ME! TELL ME!! TELL ME!!! for the same reason! It's all tied into his name! There's someone with that name in real life! A conspiracy person! Paul Dano's name in the movie was of course Alex Jones the name of the owner of a website called
Code:
www.prisonplanet.net
which explains the movie title which is ambiguous unless you're familiar with the real Alex Jones if not just google or hit his website!
The maze is still a mystery to me! Anything?

Good intel, AtomAnt.

Yeah ... I was just hoping they'd allow for him to show off more of his acting chops. His role was a bit stunted given his condition and IQ/aptitude being that of a 10yo, as they said. I was just kinda hoping he'd have had the chance to talk shit ... be malicious ... some heated confrontations or mindgames vs. Jake G's character, etc (with the mental aptitude of someone in their 20s).

 *****HIGHLIGHT*****all the while i all the audience are were put in suspense i kept thinking he had or was a multiple personality disorder typpa character that he was gonna switch into his other/s ones which meant he couldnt have been him who took the children but the other guy his brother or cousin the movies a lil compli... *****HIGHLIGHT***** that's it I'm gonna go see it again this afternoon someone on heres created a must see thread about the film too

AtomAnt,

We really liked that scene wherein he walks out of the house to take the dog for a quick walk ... and knows someone's watching him ... and walks down the road singing the "Jingle Bells, Batman smells ... Robin laid an egg ..." kids' song ... and Hugh Jackman walks up on him from behind ...

I thought he looked around he thought it was just him and the dog he started acting behaving weird as a result of the drugged d ...........

We felt he lifted the dog up on the choke collar as a "fuck you" if anyone were watching, plus he's also a creep (and Jackman probably thought the same was done to his own child and her friend). Also ... that line he said to Jackman in the parking lot outside of the police station. Something along the lines of "They didn't miss me until I was gone" or something like that. Jackman reacted immediately with that ... similar to him wanting to cap the dude as he sang that "Jingle Bells, Batman smells ..."

Dam the 1st time the choke collar was on the dog being used to strangle / torture the dog the next time Loki was holding it and saying "I need to know where everybody is!" x 3 now combine those cuts with when Keller put Alex Jones on a rope he was telling his friend "That's the choice!" x 4 then there's the name of Alex Jones who owns www.prisonplanet.com I think this movie's being futuristic! But just what do the snakes have to do with it?

Not sure about the snakes ... but it may have been for additional creepiness factor ... the maze involvement, etc. Like that dude's place ... the pig's head in the sink with flies buzzing about, etc. Weird shit.

Holly and her husband were putting kids through an appalling ordeal involving snakes in the boxes then burying them was the picture Taylor was painting! Any other movie interesting this week? How's RUNNER RUNNER?

Hoping to see Runner Runner eventually. Got an email today at 2:15pm with one of those exclusive invites from one of the sites to claim & redeem/print passes. Unfortunately it was too short notice. Movie was at 7pm tonight, and saw the email at 6pm. Usually they give you a few days notice.
