Kenan Thompson Blames SNL's Diversity Issue on Lack of Talented Black Comediennes

When Saturday Night Live announced this season's six new cast members, many were shocked to see that the sketch comedy show would be devoid of a black female cast member for the sixth year in a row.

In a world where we have a black First Lady and pop culture is defined by Scandal, Rihanna, Oprah, Nicki Minaj and Beyonce, this is beyond absurd. It's downright embarrassing. And after years of portraying seemingly every black female celebrity from Mo'Nique, Maya Angelou and Jennifer Hudson, Kenan Thompson has finally thrown in the cross-dressing towel.

When asked what the show would do now when confronted with potential black female characters or celebrity spoofs, Thompson told TVGuide.com, "I don't know. We just haven't done them. That's what I'm saying. Maybe [Jay Pharaoh] will do it or something, but even he doesn't really want to do it."

Instead of blaming showrunner Lorne Michaels or the series, which currently only employs three actors of color out of 16 cast members (Thompson, Pharaoh and the Iranian Nasim Pedrad),

Thompson blames the lack of quality black female comedians. "It's just a tough part of the business," Thompson says. "Like in auditions, they just never find ones that are ready."

While Thompson's refusal to help SNL continue to ignore its own diversity issues is commendable, blaming the problem on an absence of talented black females only perpetuates the problem. There are countless brilliant black comediennes working right now, many of whom would likely be thrilled to take part in such an iconic series (even if the quality has slipped over the decades).

In the 38 years SNL has been on the air, the series has only had four black female cast members: Yvonne Hudson (1980-81), Danitra Vance (1985-86), Ellen Cleghorne (1991-95) and Maya Rudolph (2000-2007). Of the four, only three were repertory players (Hudson was only a featured player before being fired midseason). This means, there were large gaps in SNL's history when there were no black women on the show at all.

Pharoah has recently spoken out about the series' diversity problem, telling theGrio, "They need to pay attention" and add a black woman to the cast. Pharoah even suggested his pick, Darmirra Brunson, who's currently on Tyler Perry's Love They Neighbor. "Why do I think she should be on the show? Because she's black first of all, and she's really talented. She's amazing. She needs to be on SNL. I said it. And I believe they need to follow up with it like they said they were going to do last year."

As to how the six new (all white) cast members are faring so far this season, Thompson says they're doing just fine. "They're all contributing in different ways I think. They've been doing great job so far. They're all very, very smart and talented, so that's how it is. That's the kind of people I guess that get the job," Thompson says.

coincidence?...

What will Kerry do? Kerry Washington is set to host the Nov. 2 episode of Saturday Night Live, NBC announced on Wednesday, Oct. 16 -- just days after cast member Kenan Thompson blamed the lack of show diversity on a lack of talented black female comediennes.

"It's just a tough part of the business," Thompson told TV Guide in a recent interview. "Like in auditions, they just never find ones that are ready."

Washington, 36, currently plays up the drama as the President's former crisis management expert (and mistress) Olivia Pope on ABC smash hit Scandal, but will have to bring out her goofy side for the show, which she'll host alongside musical guest Eminem.

This will be SNL's sixth consecutive season without a black female cast member, leaving a noticeable void where sketches about pop culture icons like the First Lady, Beyonce, Oprah, or even Scandal itself could take place. Thompson, 35, previously tackled black female roles like Maya Angelou and Jennifer Hudson, but has since stopped playing those characters.

"I don't know. We just haven't done them," he told TV Guide of how the show hasn't made up for this lack of representation. "That's what I'm saying. Maybe [Jay Pharaoh] will do it or something, but even he doesn't really want to do it."

Maya Rudolph, who is half black and half Jewish, previously portrayed a wide variety of characters, including Whitney Houston, Justin Guarini, and Beyonce. She left the show in 2007.

Pharaoh, who joined the cast in 2010, also recently opened up about the show's lack of a black female cast member.

"They need to pay attention," he said of the show's lack of diversity, suggesting Love Thy Neighbor actress Darmirra Brunson as a possible candidate. "Why do I think she should be on the show? Because she's black first of all, and she's really talented. She's amazing. …And I believe they need to follow up with it like they said they were going to do last year."

If you could see one black women on SNL, who would you choose? I would pick Sheryl Underwood.

:smh::smh::smh:

Blame that cac Loren Michaels... he picks the cast.

they aint say SH*T when he dumped most of last years cast and brings in like 6 non-blacks though...

NOW they gonna say something...

Keenan is DAMN wrong and I mean really wrong for that comment.

Cause dude aint been funny since he was serving burgers with Kel :hmm:

I have to agree. I think he holds the Black cast to a different standard than the rest. If Living Color and Mad TV can have a diverse cast with good Black sketch actresses why is SNL having so much trouble.

Shit Mad TV was WAY funnier than SNL anyway.

How can you be on air for 40yrs and NEVER had one Asian cast member?? NYC is pretty diverse but all they do is cast cac after cac after cac... Lorne Michaels gives no fucks :smh::smh:

I think Eddie got on during the time Michaels wasnt running the show... correct me if Im wrong

I don't see the problem with what he said. He didn't say "there aren't any funny Black women", he said when it comes audition time, they aren't ready. So they are auditioning Black women (stand ups have a hard time on that show) but none are making the grade.
Sucks but that's what it is.
The last thing any of us want them to do is hire a sister and she bombs. SNL is hit and miss as it is (like all sketch shows) but the sole Black woman on the show performing badly consistently would kill it for any sisters behind her.

When she's of The Daily Show, I think Jessica Williams would be great.

fuck this bitch ass dude.

they barely gave his black ass a chance and he talking bout black women ain't funny...

we don't know if they are or they aren't because they don't even get a chance to do shit...

michaels knows what the fuck he is doing.. when has there EVER been a black woman FEATURED as a regular on the cast in the entire 39 seasons of this show?

and then they want to blame black women like its cool...

this is no different than house negro shit imo.

i already didn't watch the show in the first place

but now i can't see myself supporting anything Kenan does outside of this show.

now this is cooning.

we aren't in those auditions though, how do we know that they're bombing out like that? especially considering how unfunny those white chicks are currently... how good could they have possibly been in an audition to get these jobs on this cast...

you mean to tell me there have only been 4 black women in 39 seasons good enough to be on the show? and only 2 were on it longer than 1 season..
really?

Sherrie on the View this morning said that Lorne Michaels could find any upcoming comic chick off YouTube with tons of views in this day and age. Made a good point.

Personally, anyone they put there at this point after it being in the media like this will only be a token. "Here black people, I got one, ok?"

I don't watch their show personally, that shit been directed to white bland college humor. Shit aint been the same since Belushi, Murphy and Steve Martin days to me.

I wish a show like Living Color would come back late night to fill that time slot.

Maybe Raven-Symone or Loni Love.

Ellen Cleghorne was a full cast member.

The people that hire say they're bombing, or at least underperforming, and that's the only opinion that counts.
I'm like you, I don't watch it. It's way too long (sketch shows should 30 mins) but as long as Cleghorne and Rudolph were on the show, I doubt they refuse to hire Black women.
Just like we don't know how good or bad they're performing in auditions, we don't know if any of the sisters from In Living Color or Mad TV have even tried out for the show.

Not being a viewer, I don't really care. But the title and what Keenan said are two different things and I definitely wanted to point that out.

His statement isn't as bad as advertised. I'm sure it's not only hard to find black female comediennes but black female comediennes that can do sketch comedy live. The pool is pretty low, who here can even name 5 active black female comediennes? He ain't lying, BUT it's not like Michaels is gonna have an In Living Color type cast either.

my thing is, the twice as good rule seems to have to apply

cause they have gone decades with marginally talented white heaux's on the show who go on to do nothing.. but they seem to always have a spot...

peace
Yet he too isn't funny...

:itsawrap:
As he's one of the reasons I don't even fuck with it anymore but I was raised on the 1st gen so :dunno:

It's one of the rules in the white ran entertainment business. Debra Wilson damn near carried Mad TV on her back for over a decade but some how SNL found room for the Victoria Jacksons of sketch comedy.
1st person that came to mind as she definitely sharpened her sword since she started.

Just saw her on that LateNight ByronAllen show showing off all them tats.

Now don't know if the writers & her female cast members would make it as amicable as they possibly could to bring out her best side though.
