Sociologist Says Fear of Being Racially Profiled Keeps Black Men from Jogging

As Trayvon Martin’s murder proved, walking while black can get you killed. Rashawn Ray, a sociologist and assistant professor at the University of Maryland, believes that reality is why black men are less likely to jog in areas where they have white neighbors.

He gave a presentation on his theory, “Black People Don’t Run in My Neighborhood,” at Wake Forest University, in which he explained why black men are fearful of jogging: “It has a lot to do with criminalization,” he said. “It’s the inability for people to recognize or kind of separate a black man’s identity from criminality, so being black and male subjectively infers being criminal.”

To combat this, he believes black men go out of their way to appear non-threatening. “Black men have to go through a signaling process, particularly middle class black men, when they try to be physically active outside,” Ray explained. Black men might wave at people, stay away from places with dark lighting, carry their IDs and even wear college t-shirts to show that they are educated.

If you think that behavior is excessive, Ray offers up Trayvon Martin’s death and the killing of 24 year-old Jonathan A. Ferrell by a Charlotte police officer as evidence that black men have every right to be fearful.

He conducted a nationwide study on exercise patterns and determined that 50% of black Americans aren’t physically active at all, compared to 33% of whites. Ray believes that the way black men are perceived when running is a contributing factor. Through his research, he hoped to identify “the ways that racial inequality is manufactured and maintained in society.” We all know that, without a doubt, racial profiling is one of them.

me and the guys used to joke about this shit all the time. dont be black and get caught running anywhere, somebody white fuck is gonna think your fleeing the scene of a crime ;smh:

If you only knew...

...and since you don't, I'm going to tell you --

I didn't tell anyone close to me 'cause I knew they'd probably think I was being extreme...

...but my two favorite that I've visited are LA and NYC. The biggest reasons why I left LA, after being out there for THREE days intending to stay, was because of my fear of the notorious gang known as the LAPD. The LAPD don't give a fuck, AND they're protected up high. I'm tall, dark, and if you don't know me, I can look very intimidating. I don't do anything to get into trouble, but my mind couldn't find any ease out there. Same with NYC, and the NYPD.

People can say I'm too paranoid - and maybe I am - but if there are black people that have been unfairly targeted by the NYPD and LAPD, what makes me any different?

You think Rodney King was anticipating that when he left his house? I doubt it.

Amadou Diallo? Ditto.

Shit, I don't want to go to NYC anymore because of S & F. That could easily turn into some bullshit.

I know the feeling, it wouldn't stop me from jogging but going to a white bar or rock concert I will have to think hard about that one

I admit to having experienced these thoughts at one time. And consciously picking brighter clothes to not be seen but to not be seen ("mistaken") for an assailant or suspect. :smh:

more fearful, bug-eyed, black man chickenshit asshole excuses for not physically fighting the white man. :smh:

Jogging? How about buying a house and having the police called by your neighbor, saying that you the homeowner broke into your house.

I feel you guys' perspectives.... Honestly, regardless of how much I accumulate, I don't believe I'll ever live in a majority non-black neighborhood.... I'm that brother who goes out of his way to find one of those few-and-far-between really nice majority Black areas to live in regardless of where I've relocated (5 different areas so far). Hell, if I can't feel comfortable at/around the crib, what's the point. It's bad enough to have to try to not be offensive at work, being a linebacker-looking brother. I go jogging around the way 3/4 times a week, and that's the last thing on my mind...

Shit I got stopped at the end of a run last year. Light shined in my face, "put your hands on the car" , "where are you going" all that shit. After I checked out they showed me who they were looking for. I've seen dude around my side of town. He's has about 4 inches and 80lbs on me and is a few shades darker than me and the pigs were like "whoa you're lucky, almost a perfect match!". I guess because we both have beards.

I'm still getting my run on though

It could if niggas were really scared. I have been hemmed up in the middle of the day by the cops minding my own business, all it did was make me hate police more than I already did, and I still do what the fuck I wanna do wit my black ass :hmm:

It's why I only run in parks and make sure I have something on me like keys that make noise so you can hear me coming. Still wasn't enough after the verdict though. Some women were just plain shook when they saw me coming

this. i dont like being around white people anymore, they make me uncomfortable. this is why i love atlanta and the surrounding areas so much

I couldn't run through my neighborhood without white harassment. Between the Cops and the asshole neighbors with dogs, it got old really fast. I finally broke out and turned into good ole boy.

And this was 15 years ago

Brother, every time back in the day when I got my whip detailed, LBPD, Signal Hill and Culver City would pull my ass over.

I just started rolling with one of My Albums in the back seat so they knew I wasn't a dope dealer.

Then the bitches kept asking me who killed Pac. :smh::lol::smh:

Couldn't win for loosing fucking with these pigs. :smh:

Yea its kinda fucked up when you have to wear a heart rate monitor, an iPod, and a smile to not get fucked with.

:smh::smh::smh:

Hope this produces a "Mr Cab Driver" type of track about cops on the album he's working on.

"Mr. Policeman don't like my kind of skin..."
He went straight back to the studio and recorded this...

Lenny Kravitz - Bank Robber Man (Lyrics)

I was walking down the street today
Just as somebody blew the doors off of the b of a
Just then I heard them call my name
As I was thrown against the car
I was being framed

All units we've got our man
We've got the bank robber man
We don't need no reason
You're going in the can
You look like the bank robber man
I think you misunderstand
Do you think that I am the one that did it
Just because I'm tan?
Just then the officer at hand said
I don't give a damn that you are in a rock and roll band

All units we've got our man
We've got the bank robber man
We don't need no reason
You're going in the can
You look like the bank robber man

Just tell me what's going on ?
Can you tell me what I did wrong ?
Does busting me make you feel strong ?
Make you feel strong

All units we've got our man
We've got the bank robber man
We don't need no reason
You're going in the can
You look like the bank robber man

When I was in Ohio, I used to get my run in early in the morning, sometimes before the sun came up, and I didn't give a fuck about the weather. In the winter the temp routinely stayed below freezing, so I had my gloves, long drawers, thick sweats and I was good -- the only thing was my face and neck used to get frozen as fuck. My girl used to worry about me getting sick so she bought me this thick ski-mask kinda deal to cover my face.

I tried it out one time and it was comfortable as hell, but I was like hell naw, I ain't wearing this. I was staying in this nice sub-division not too far from the mall with engineer-types and Mercedes, and I like I can't do it. Black man in this neighborhood... running... with a ski-mask on... :smh::lol:

I mostly run in broad daylight since I moved, but I don't particularly give a fuck now. I gotta miles to get in; can't worry about shit I can't control.

Oh shit

Thanks bruh...

Should have checked the date on that story... thought it just happened or something. Cool track... I need to start catching up on Lenny's discog post '5'. I know all his albums up to that point like the back of my hand but I stopped checking for his music hard after that some reason.

Big ups to Lenny.

Maaaaaan I always get terrified looks when I ran around my neighborhood. Had the cops giving me the eye but I had a fucking runners vest on!. I stopped all together sometime ago. Now I just mostly hoop when I can.

So if you go to a high school track and run around it, you are worried you'll be profiled as a fleeing criminal:hmm:

I mean I still run but I know where they're coming from. And I'm dark-skinned.
