The NFL is urgently discussing a new scheduling formula that would include a three-game preseason and could also feature an expanded postseason field from 12 to 14 teams, sources league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Chris Mortensen.

The expanded postseason proposal would offset teams' lost revenue from the elimination of a preseason game, and it also could lead to additional television revenues for the league.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell alluded to the league's interest in the new scheduling model during an interview this past week, although he said the changes likely would not happen in 2014.

But sources told ESPN that the changes could still be implemented as early as 2014 if the NFL can procure the necessary votes from team owners. The league also would need to establish a new preseason scheduling formula, get sponsorship agreements and resolves a few stadium lease issues, sources said.

The NFL's competition committee recommended the three-game preseason model as the minimum necessary period for player evaluation and development, sources said.

"ROger we can't make the playoffs with a 8-8 or 9-7 record"

"we need 1 more team to make the playoffs"

fuck outta here

I've always complained that the season was too short. I love watching nfl so I'm not against this idea. It definitely could make things more interesting considering wild card teams have won Super Bowls in recents years.

How can Roger Goodell say he's looking out for players safety and then wants to expand the regular season and playoffs..

It makes no sense at all...

The majority of fans and players don't want this nonsense....

And how is the season too short....:smh:

Teams come into training camp knowing,if you win the division you're in the playoffs...This is just an attempt to let mediocre teams in the playoffs...ie Dallas

Roger Goodell needs to sit his stupid ass down somewhere....

And what about the saftey of the players with these additional games? Where is
the players union to counter this bullshit?

That safety talk is all politics. None of the commissioners of any pro sports is going to consider safety over money.

Football season sept to dec and maybe to jan. if lucky enough. You think the players would be against the extra pay?

The two sports that got there shit right and shouldn't be touched is the NFL and College Basketball. I like there structure in season, playoffs, and championship.

Yes,I believe alot of players would be against expanding the playoffs....

Everything isn't all about money....

If the NFL expands the season they may consider letting players play only a set amount of games. In other words, if they were to expand the season to 18 games then a player can only start/play in 16 of them. I heard this on ESPN radio last week.

ironically he is a eagirls fan lol

as for the change...I'm for it...they'd take out a preseason game to add the extra playoff game so it's still the same amount of games although the intensity of a playoff game is much higher than a preseason game...but it'd only be 2 extra teams that have to play that game...and it doesn't mean more shitty teams will be in the playoffs...it could be just the opposite...like when a team can make the playoffs cuz they won the division @ 8-8 but a 10-6 team is eliminated cuz they played in a tough division...shit I like it...as for a lengthened reg season...that idea was already scrapped so I'm not too sure why that's even being discussed

I think that's a horrible idea.

As a Cowboys fan I hate to agree but you could be right right

Jerry may something to do with this

We going 8-8 every damn year and he thinks that's good enough or right on the cusp and he wants in the playoffs

They all need to get the fuck outta here though nothing wrong with the playoffs or the 16 game season why are is the NFL steady trying to make money grabs and its the most profitable sport?

Greed gets everyone in the end

Bum ass NFC east this year. Any of those team would be luck enough to make 8 wins

I don't get this logic about bad teams necessarily getting into the playoffs w/ a 14 team system...following this model the 10-6 bears would've gotten into the playoffs last season in the NFC...not the 8-8 cowboys...shit even the giants were ahead of them @ 9-7...it would've taken an 18 team playoff system for the cowboys to sneak in @ 8-8 last season

I'd rather see more games in the regular or post season than 4 preseason games. Remove two preseason games, add 2 regular season games, add two more teams to the playoffs per conference. Fuck it, players wouldn't mind, more games equal more game checks. More football is never a bad thing, unless its the pro bowl.
