Damn, dtown got there before me.

 I didn't see your post but shit I didn't know people knew that shit. I use to hear this shit and be like "WTF?". I fuck with that PMW record but that shit is Nasty Girl to the T. I never heard anyone ever mention the shit and I thought I was trippin'.

:lol::lol:...I never noticed that shit, wow.......PRINCE should be suing like muthafucka.......they just slowed down Nasty Girl....

I'm shocked Prince hasn't to be honest. Prince don't play that shit when it comes to his own music. Shit Pharrell don't age either just like Prince. Niggas gave that Nasty Girl beat to PMW and I guess not enough people heard it so did it AGAIN and gave it to Britney Spears. Bold as hell.

nah you misunderstood.

not the same beat within himself, they've made lots of similar sounding beats and honestly you can tell which songs were made in the same time frame by the sounds they use.

i was talking about the influential side.. like you said influenced by prince etc... he's been influenced but he's never just straight up jacked doves cry and tried to pass it off as his own.

Did he not do it with I'm a Slave 4 U and Please Don't Mind? You can argue that shit sounds more like Nasty Girl than Blurred Lines does to Marvin's song.

Re: Did ROBIN THICKE steal MARVIN GAYE's SONG? ....well Marvin Gaye's FAMILY is SUING

the only one i noticed really was the hot in here song, that one made me do a triple take cause i knew the chuck brown song.

as it still stands he needs to cut the check for the marvin gaye estate.

I agree. Blurred Lines is a shameless sample. He should at least cut them a check out of respect.

But EVERY artist borrows, people.

For example, listen to the bass line of "Give it to me" by Rick James and the bass line of "Thriller" by Michael Jackson.

check my edit.

they have the same drum patter and i liken it to the impeach the president break beat.

and im not here trying to fight for them or this song, im on record and still think its a ripoff and they should pay royalties.

Oh I agree. I guess its a touchy subject when you bring up a white r&b artist and bring up new music but this been the game. People in all forms of art borrow from people before them. They should cut the check though. Shouldn't even have to go to court. Just do what's right. Otherwise, its gonna get ugly.

I'm not following you. You saying the Prince track is like the Impeach The President track?

its a flashback... white artist steal song black artist created it gets no credit..

that's why it gets touchy...regardless of who produced or co wrote the credit is going to robin thicke.. he's touring off of it not pharrell or tip.

Re: Did ROBIN THICKE steal MARVIN GAYE's SONG? ....well Marvin Gaye's FAMILY is SUING

Neptunes has been known for using a lot of interpolations (replays) over the years. Remember Nelly's Hot in hurr? As far as that Blurred Lines it does sound similar but is not a sample. Think of it like this how many songs have you heard since B.M.F that sound like it??

that has been sampled on thousands of rap songs..that beat. but the instrumentation was different.

so im saying he ripped off the drums which is what makes the songs glaringly similar.

it's no excuse its just what he did lol.

ITs not exactly a flashback though being everytime that song is played Pharrell makes more money off that record than Robin Thicke does since he wrote and produced it and has made millions off it being its sold over 5 million singles.

I get what you're saying though. But in the 60's and 70's when the robbing was being committed black artists and producers weren't getting ANYTHING off songs white artists made hits. They'd give them pocket change. They'd make millions off a hit and give them a stack.....

I won't argue about it because I could be wrong but that shit sounds more than just a drum pattern. Like someone said on the previous page, that shit sounds like a slowed down version of Nasty Girl. But my ears aren't trained to hear the difference I guess.

Re: Did ROBIN THICKE steal MARVIN GAYE's SONG? ....well Marvin Gaye's FAMILY is SUING

Yeah I hear you Largebills. Sampling is such a tricky and touchy subject.

In the case of Robin Thicke, I can see how people relate to the 50's/60's/ era of white artists blatantly ripping of unknown black artists during segregation and profiting from their talent. In this case, I think the blow is softened since Pharrell co-wrote and produced the track. And I agree, that 'Impeach The President' sample has been dissected and used to death, it's crazy.

understood but i say flashback because the main artist is white and white is who everyone sees regardless... WE are knowing that pharrell is getting a huge chunk of it... but the headline and the suit..all lead with robin.

subtle differences but the main thing is the drum pattern. and also there aren't any new notes...so things are bound to be kind of the same.. but with the example you gave...different instrument here.. different sound there... then its different

like if he didn't blatantly use that drum pattern and say he used something else, i don't think anyone would put the two together and say that's vanity 6 with a different drum pattern.

thats all

While we're on the topic of 'influences':

From the whole rhythm to the chorus: "Till I reach the highest ground"/ "Just stop dogging me around"... similar or a blatant rip off?

Yea strictly from a front man point of view.

it just speaks to how forgetful most are. Marvin gaye is an icon.. and people didn't make the connection overall.

subconscious
you fuck around you get similar, you get the groove you make the song, then you find out its close to something else.

Re: Did ROBIN THICKE steal MARVIN GAYE's SONG? ....well Marvin Gaye's FAMILY is SUING

because they're saying this shit is a travesty and robbery. this is marvin's song.

and thicke in true white fashion stole something and is now suing the people complaining about the theft.. he wants them to sit quiet and take it
Because behind being married to a sistah Robin Thicke is STILL a:rolleyes:

Re: Did ROBIN THICKE steal MARVIN GAYE's SONG? ....well Marvin Gaye's FAMILY is SUING

Well let's be real though. Pharrell is the one who co-wrote and produced the track. Which is why he and TIP are also being sued.
They do sound similar but to me Pharrell has been making beats they do seem influenced by older artists like Prince and Michael/Quincy.

I don't know how I feel about this. Hopefully they meet in the middle and cut a check. The song is the biggest hit of the year. They not gonna be hurting by cutting them a check. I also don't feel they have to being the songs aren't similar enough to warrant such.

Agreed!

This isn't the same at all. For starters, Marvin Gaye is hardly some obscure unknown artist. He made more money and had more hits than Robin Thicke could have in two lifetimes.

Also, they did not sample the original. You can tell because the drums on "got to give it up" are slightly behind the beat whereas "Blurred Lines" are perfectly quantized. I know that you can chop and quantize a sample, but to get every hit that perfectly in line you would damn near have to have the master tapes and sync up every single percussion track.

There's no question that the two tracks are VERY similar. In fact my record pool even released a remix that has Marvin's first verse over the beat from blurred lines before kicking into Robin's. Blatant rip off though? Hardly

I hope that Robin and company do win this case. If they don't it will open the floodgates of all other kinds of ridiculous lawsuits. Michael Jackson's family will sue Chris Brown (Check the similarities between "Off the Wall" and "Fine China") Pharrel and Daft Punk will be sued by Sister Sledge (Check "Get Lucky" against "He's the Greatest Dancer").

Artist's creativity has been strangled enough by these bullshit labels. The last thing we need is it to be suffocated by the courts too.

Robin Thicke did not steal from Marvin. This track does not contain a "sample" nor does it contains "lyrics" from the original song. What you and others are advocating for is paying for a "sound" which is not possible or a violation.

That would be like a producer making a song using the "The New Jack Swing" sound. No one controls a sound or have rights to a sound.

Why everything has to be about race? Especially with thick. He don't even date white women.

Pharrel produced the track and owns the publishing. So he gets paid more than Robin off the song.

No one is stealing from black artist. Robin killing r&b because he makes good music.

Re: Did ROBIN THICKE steal MARVIN GAYE's SONG? ....well Marvin Gaye's FAMILY is SUING

Today heard it on the radio like 20 times asked my wife what
Marvin Gaye song did they sample and she was like huh?...and I was
like I can't put my finger on it but that's a Marvin Gaye song...

Pulled out the phone and googled “Got to Give It Up” and Funkadelic’s “Sexy Ways”...

Corporate music has gone too far and I used to be a Robin Thicke fan but he, pHARREL AND THAT LIL BITCH ti CAN kiss their music cred
goodbye....

Yeah I listened and Pharrell did not use a sample. How many beats sound like a Lex Luger produced track? Does Will made owe Lex Luger for the song he made for Ross "2 Pac Back?

Using a sound is not copyright infringement.

Robin Thicke is killing r&b because he actually makes music that you can play for a chick to set the mood. This is how r&b use to be until these new tight pants wanna be thugs came on the scene:smh:

Back in the day you R&b had your fast side and slow side of the tape. When it was time to set the mood R&b artist took pride in producing the most smoothest song.

Robin simply makes grown man music

That being said, his biggest hit is basically a MARVIN GAYE SAMPLE from a song over 30 YEARS OLD, hell......as one BGOL member said "just RE-RELEASE MARVIN GAYE as a NEW ARTIST" ....He would really dominate the R & B scene if a recycled MARVIN GAYE song can be a number one hit in 2013.
