Santi, aka, Santigold, wrote that whole album. There was some criticism that they just through Res on it because she was pretty and could sell records, which is what happened.

Santigold (my 2nd wife) aka Santi White writing the songs was never a secret. She's given credit in the album insert. There was never a controversy. Res (my 1st wife) definitely benefited from Santi's writing as all artists that have had the benefit of singing any of her songs. Santi is the shit no doubt. Does not take away from Res at all.

I'm very well versed on both their careers as I am married to both. Even when Santi was with the rock group Stiffed.

I suspect there is some friction between them since I read in a NY Times article about Santigold that Res was her "former friend". I am sure someone knows the story here.

Santigold has been mentioned on this board a few times. Yea they had beef but that didn't change Res' voice. Fact is the record company had a platinum voice but didn't know how to market her style. The combo of Santi's style and Res' voice was just too different and unique that they didn't know how to market it. Hence low record sells even though everyone that's ever heard it loved it. I still don't think Santi is promoted like she should even though her solo stuff had sold more than Res.

Res is very talented. Her album from 01-02 is a classic...

I think the album was ahead of its time, so labels didnt know how to market her.

If it came out now she would have done her numbers

or sometimes the original artist may have a hit record, but their voice doesnt sound right on the track, so they give it to someone with a voice that does

The problem I have with that is that Res' debut album was written and produced by Santigold. If it was as cutting edge as you say (and I think it was, I actually bought it the day it was released and still love it) how likely is it she jacked the style of and artist who came along a decade later?

For me, I was onto the Res album from day one. I got turned onto Santigold and Stiffed much later. Once I realized that Santigold also wrote the Res album, then all of Santi White's shit made sense to me. Res is a terrific singer, but the intellectual property is all Santigold's.

But I also like "Black Girls Rock" and would encourage Res fans to check it out if they haven't already.

Doc from Esthero (the group) was a driving force behind that release also production wise. Esthero (the singer) took a shot at Res in the form of the song O.G. Bitch....after he moved on to produce some tracks for Res' debut release.

Props to the OP. Been on RES since the BEGINNING. This was a special era (2002-2005) in black alternative music and neo-soul. I'm still bumping a lot of shit that came up during that time period.

I thought I was the only one. I didnt know shit about RES when her firs albumn came out. In fact I dont even know how I came to own it, but I played that shit on repeat like Guy's first Album. I still play it and I still dont know that much or really anything about her

She performed at the One Music Fest here in September. Solid show. I wasn't really familiar with her beyond hearing her name over the years. She is a sexy muthafucka with a nice bubble. Not sure when she's coming back but she mentioned that she had an EP about to drop.

For some reason people have been sneaking in and out the city. Shit I just found out that The Foreign Exchange has a show in a couple of weeks here.

I bet Res is hard to deal with. I've never heard anyone come out and say it but I've seen her in interviews and she does come off like an undercover bitch.
