I agree, I went in expecting a new plot not a re-tread villain from the original series. My feeling if you're going to do that, you have to explain the back story of Khan better than they did. It was a good action flick to kick off the summer season

This movie is "GOOD" at best! Period...

The movie was good..better than I expected and worth the money for IMAX/3D.

Just got back from the late show at IMAX. It was good. It wasn't an amazing masterpiece that blows you away but it was good. It was basically a high octane action flick with some science fiction thrown in. Tons of almost non stop action. I guess that must be what has everyone all amped up and charged up.
It was pretty much Indiana Jones in space. That's cool. I was expecting a cinematic masterpiece on the level of Matrix or LOTR. Effects were fantastic. 3D was great.
For hardcore trekkies it wasn't necessarily a star trek problem but more a character development problem. Not really a problem just not really there. The story and writing were a tadbit 2 dimensional and predictable. Not much depth or character connection.
The Spock character was really played well. But the entire cast really lacked warmth. You couldn't care enough about them to really feel anything for them.
I could go deeper but let's just say it was a good action flick. Excellent effects work. Decent story but a Star Trek masterpiece or classic? There were TV episodes written with way more depth. The action and effects enhance the stories of the classics not make them. I am more of a film buff than a moviegoer or movie fan.

At this point the only thing that counts to me is, that its wayyyy better than IRON MAN 3. There was nothing epic about it, the relationship between SPOCK and KIRK in this movie is CONCRETE now. I feel they just wanted to establish Khan in this universe and create a backdrop of origin in this story. I'm not sure why Kirk hated Khan in the original, but for those who do not know, this version gives you the ammunition of understanding.
I do hate obvious foreshadowing. Overall it was a Great Sequel.

Though I felt that Abrams at times parodied "TREK" a bit,
At the same time he actually respected the source and its fans.
Yeah. Most of us knew what that "BIG REVEAL" was in regards to John Harrison. Worst Kept Secret.

The subtle way Cumberbatch that shit pulled it off like it was "matter of fact" made it a "AAAWWWW SHIT" moment. There were people actually gasping and clapping at that moment during the preview I went to. Hell. He even gave me chills when he said that shit.
Say what you want about Abrams. But like his "MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE" films, he totally respects the source. To the point of even using nuances like the "incidental music" from both shows.
Abrams has made "STAR TREK" accessible to today's audiences. But still maintained it's core to a point. Though a few of my more hardened "TREK" friends for decades totally disagree. So I can't even talk to them about it anymore. But those Mother Fuckers are on line this weekend I guarantee you.
The Mandarin in "IRON MAN 3" on the other hand was one of the WORST plot twists in film history. Not going for an ASIAN actor to portray The Mandarin was bad enough. But to have the character in the film be an actor,

And "a cover" was a total disregard and disrespect to Iron Man's canon and comic fans.
The Mandarin was one of Iron Man's greatest foes. Now because of this film, he's rendered a JOKE for which most people will remember him as.

And as a direct result he has taken the HEART right out of what has made ST "special" and "unique" all these years. The name now stands as the only difference between it and BSG! FireFly(we would be so lucky)!, Starship Troopers! and all the like!
Roddenberry is rolling in his grave and the rest of us that know better rolling with him. A sad day, StarTrek has just become another "Space-Show." Soul-less, Theme-less, Ordinary.

I don't look at it quite as harshly as that but more from a cinematic or storytelling perspective rather than grossly distorting the main characters or Star Trek canon. That would definitely have been hugely insulting but Abrams wasnt that brazen and didnt go that far.
My problem is the character development and the contrivance of the plot and story not total or near total disrespect or disregard for the Star Trek universe.
Their alternate timeline from 2009 gives them cover and excuse to turn and twist stuff around. The characters themselves is where my gripe begins. The movie was cool just not in the cerebral and intellectually deep sci-fi and social and philosophical commentary the tv series provides.
Both the Matrix and LOTR keep that type of intellectual capacity intact and still provide the chills and spills of entertainment. As great as the new guy's (dont know his name) performance as Spock the Vulcan is he seriously lacks Nimoy's warmth and charm through that logical veneer.
He is the stand out character. The rest of the cast just seem to be spouting these hip cool sounding lines but thats it. Both Brent Spiner and Mr. Nimoy both brought a lovable and endearing warmth and likeability to their logical and robotic characters.
As far as them rewriting Khan I have no big problem. The problem is how they did it. Once again it was simple and somewhat predictable and formulaic. No back story, set up or flashback.
Again these are all storytelling gripes. They are minor gripes because the film is enjoyable. It just lacked any soul or depth. That is the heart of any good story. Star Trek has never done that in their over 40 year history with their stories. Not horrible just kinda thin. Doesnt really keep up that legacy.

Because I really believe either I'm very critical or folks have a very relaxed standard(much like society, another thread). More likely however, I think folks have been so inundated with so much mediocrity from Hollywood that they no longer can peel at the glitter to see the glam.

Not disagreeing with you. I have the exact same complaint. I'm just acknowledging it's entertainment value. It maintains the technical nuances without the depth, warmth and spirit. My gripe just isn't as penetrating.
Am not sure what u guys are all bitching about..I just tried watching the wrath of khan with William Chatner and that shit was terrible compared to into the darkness..the movie is no dark night rises but it's damn good tho..worth the money I spent

Story...
Seeing "ST: TWOK" was one of the GREATEST movie experiences I ever had. I had seen a free sneak a week before it was released.
All the advertisement in the major NYC papers gave was a stardate, time and location for the sneak. And my ASS was there Saturday morning at the old Loew's State I & II in Times Square at 8am for a 8:30pm screening. 20th person on line.
That line stretched from Broadway and 45th St. down to 6th Ave. NYC BGOL peeps know how long that block is. Close to like 300 people.
People were having a good time. No fights and stupid shit at all. We all had established rules about "skips" if you can believe it. That word went all the way down to the last person. Shit was like a line party. We were buying food for one another. Some peeps held my spot for me while I went to the library to finish a college term paper. And we were all complete fuckin' strangers.
The scene when Spock was dying in that radiation tube had all these women screaming and crying. But when all these hands in the theater went up with the Vulcan hand sign...
I CRACKED UP SO LOUD!!!
Some of those chicks thought I was being cruel.
Definitely a great communal film experience "pre-Internet".
You'll never have experiences like those again.
