The movie was good, Imax 3D was worth the money, I liked the acting of Sherlock Holmes, but I was expecting a totally new story line and villain... so I give it a 7/10.
Also to the "die-hard" ST fans we need to have a SERIOUS talk!
I just came from seeing "StarTrek" /sigh!
For you folks that have posted in this thread and used the word "GREAT" I'm going to start a thread entitled, "Either my definition of the word "Great" is too Great or yours way to Loose"
This movie is "GOOD" at best! Period...
I'll be back later to give a much more comprehensive review...
Side-note: I'm not surprised by what I saw it's about what I expected and continue to expect from a J.J. Abrams TV Show/Movie. Also to the "die-hard" ST fans we need to have a SERIOUS talk!
the movie was good as fuck. and i liked how the movie was connected to the tv show and TWOK. that dreadnought ship.....big ass ship.

For those who think some of us are crazy because we felt "ST: ID" was better than "IRON MAN 3",
Here's my opinion why...
THE BIG REVEAL was handled way better in this film.
Though I felt that Abrams at times parodied "TREK" a bit,
At the same time he actually respected the source and its fans.
Yeah. Most of us knew what that "BIG REVEAL" was in regards to John Harrison. Worst Kept Secret.
BUUUUTTTT...
The subtle way Cumberbatch that shit pulled it off like it was "matter of fact" made it a "AAAWWWW SHIT" moment. There were people actually gasping and clapping at that moment during the preview I went to. Hell. He even gave me chills when he said that shit.
Say what you want about Abrams. But like his "MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE" films, he totally respects the source. To the point of even using nuances like the "incidental music" from both shows.
Abrams has made "STAR TREK" accessible to today's audiences. But still maintained it's core to a point. Though a few of my more hardened "TREK" friends for decades totally disagree. So I can't even talk to them about it anymore. But those Mother Fuckers are on line this weekend I guarantee you.
The Mandarin in "IRON MAN 3" on the other hand was one of the WORST plot twists in film history. Not going for an ASIAN actor to portray The Mandarin was bad enough. But to have the character in the film be an actor,
A FUCKIN' ACTOR!!!
And "a cover" was a total disregard and disrespect to Iron Man's canon and comic fans.
The Mandarin was one of Iron Man's greatest foes. Now because of this film, he's rendered a JOKE for which most people will remember him as.
You may as well have put FIN FANG FOOM in there with his purple shorts and shit.
Thanks Robert Downey Jr. And Shane Black.![]()

And as a direct result he has taken the HEART right out of what has made ST "special" and "unique" all these years. The name now stands as the only difference between it and BSG! FireFly(we would be so lucky)!, Starship Troopers! and all the like!
Roddenberry is rolling in his grave and the rest of us that know better rolling with him. A sad day, StarTrek has just become another "Space-Show." Soul-less, Theme-less, Ordinary.

So when did you SEE IT???![]()
I don't look at it quite as harshly as that but more from a cinematic or storytelling perspective rather than grossly distorting the main characters or Star Trek canon. That would definitely have been hugely insulting but Abrams wasnt that brazen and didnt go that far.
My problem is the character development and the contrivance of the plot and story not total or near total disrespect or disregard for the Star Trek universe.
Their alternate timeline from 2009 gives them cover and excuse to turn and twist stuff around. The characters themselves is where my gripe begins. The movie was cool just not in the cerebral and intellectually deep sci-fi and social and philosophical commentary the tv series provides.
Both the Matrix and LOTR keep that type of intellectual capacity intact and still provide the chills and spills of entertainment. As great as the new guy's (dont know his name) performance as Spock the Vulcan is he seriously lacks Nimoy's warmth and charm through that logical veneer.
He is the stand out character. The rest of the cast just seem to be spouting these hip cool sounding lines but thats it. Both Brent Spiner and Mr. Nimoy both brought a lovable and endearing warmth and likeability to their logical and robotic characters.
As far as them rewriting Khan I have no big problem. The problem is how they did it. Once again it was simple and somewhat predictable and formulaic. No back story, set up or flashback.
Again these are all storytelling gripes. They are minor gripes because the film is enjoyable. It just lacked any soul or depth. That is the heart of any good story. Star Trek has never done that in their over 40 year history with their stories. Not horrible just kinda thin. Doesnt really keep up that legacy.
then theirs no point. The Star Trek universe is not a stand-alone of the television series exclusive of the movies it's a whole"cerebral and intellectually deep sci-fi and social and philosophical commentary"

Mofo did you just but Battlestar Galactica (SyFy version) in the same boat with Starship Troopers??! Souless and themeless?!
Don't ever diss that BSG series again! That was one of the best space operas ever next to the anime Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

Why are you engaging with someone on film when there's a better topic that isn't being addressed? Why is tical afraid of black youth and public places?
I'll end this discussion early before it stumbles along any further! Because, if you don't understand part of "entire" StarTrek core IS it'sthen theirs no point. The Star Trek universe is not a stand-alone of the television series exclusive of the movies it's a whole
My perspective of Star Trek is irreconcilably different from yours it's not even close.Laughable really, you criticized it as having "lack-of" whereas for all these years, until recently thanks to Mr. Abrhams, it's always been recognized for.
Not disagreeing with you. I have the exact same complaint. I'm just acknowledging it's entertainment value. It maintains the technical nuances without the depth, warmth and spirit. My gripe just isn't as penetrating.
Am not sure what u guys are all bitching about..I just tried watching the wrath of khan with William Chatner and that shit was terriblecompared to into the darkness..the movie is no dark night rises but it's damn good tho..worth the money I spent
