Mayer is from Detroit and is heavily influenced by Motown. That's his style. His first album was dope. I wouldn't compare him to Thicke or Timberlake. He's in his own lil lane and signed by Stones Throw.

His vocals are a bit blahzay. As far as white boys doing R&B Soul go, I still haven't really found anyone that's brought it like Jamie Lidell and he's been at it for almost a decade now with little hype. He did get a song on a Target commercial & Red Dead Redemption but still nobody knows of him.
As far as Soul in general, another UK singer Steve Spacek never got any shine either even though he got some work with Dilla before he passed.

If you really must know...The music industry is very racist behind the scenes.
Whats happening now is they are letting the white artists express themselves creatively, while they make the black artists keep doing cookie cutter bullshit..(For example: Adele gets to make songs from the heart, while seasoned veterans like Beyonce are still forced to make microwave pop music......Thats not a coincidence at all)
