9 to 5: Days in Porn - A porn documentary from a handful of years back. Seemed to focus primarily around the 2006/2007 mark . Just under 2 hours. Enjoyed it as I've always been a fan of the BTS (BEHIND THE SCENES) content and shit. They pick a decent variety of subjects as well. Features people like Belladonna, Ava Rose, Roxy Deville, Jim Powers, and Sasha Grey. "The documentary took five years to produce,[7] with over three years filming.[3] Through interviews with 77 persons, the film profiles 10 different members of the U.S.'s porn industry of the San Fernando Valley, where 80% of American pornography films are produced.[1] With an emphasis on the actors themselves, the documentary includes individuals involved in production. The documentary first screened at the Montréal Film Festival in August 2008.[1] It was released to the European film market in February 2009 with a world premiere in Berlin, Germany.[8] It then screened in March 2009 at the Miami International Film Festival and the Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema in March, and in June at the Bellaria Film Festival, in Bellaria, Italy."

Smashed - Good movie. Had heard about it in 2012 and made sure to check it. It's also currently available for rent at the BGOL video store. Good cast. Decent role for Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) and the lead actress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) does a solid job carrying the film. It focuses on a woman making changes in her life coming to the realization that she's an alcoholic. Only complaint would be it's a bit too short at just under 1 hour, 20 minutes. They could have developed things further if they had gone around 1 hour, 45 mins. Nice indy feel though.

Dirty hearts was excellent. About a japanese colony in brazil dealing with the end of the world war and all of the crazy stuff people in charge did to keep everyone else believing japan won it and didn't surrender to the allies.

shame was also excellent great character study. there's some wild shit in it. but its really well done. without giving much of the story away.

gonna watch hunger next.

steve mcqueen might be my new favorite director.

Thanks for the intel. I'll check out Dirty Hearts.

True - very brave role there in Shame for Fassbender. Brave across the board for all the talent.

Oz the Great and Powerful

I have always found the stories that followed The Wizard of Oz to be more interesting.
Oz the Great and Powerful proves that a "prequel" to TWOO,can be just as interesting
and enchanting.
Disney and creators of OTGAP, trace along the blueprint of TWOO,as much as they legally
can, since the rights to TWOO belong to Warner Bros.Im actually grateful that i was spared some
of the annoyances of the original film.
The dialogue and the delivery of it in OTGAP,is stiff at times. The CGI is a bit off.James Franco
as Oscar Diggs / Wizard of Oz hams it up in a few scenes, but he gradually grew on me. Mila Kunis as Theodora /
The Wicked Witch of the West.Rachel Weisz as Evanora / The Wicked Witch of the East, and Michelle Williams
as Glinda the Good Witch / Annie are all lovely and did well with their roles.
Little side kick characters like Zach Braff as the voice of the monkey Finley / Frank, Oscar's circus assistant
and Joey King as the voice of China Girl / Girl in Wheelchair were very likeable.
Despite it's flaws OTGAP really charmed me.

Scale of 1-10 an 8

Dead Man Down

Dead Man Down is a European style revenge flick.Though i loved the style of the film,i felt
Colin Farrell as Victor wasnt given enough of a backstory to make his skills and feats believable.
Of course losing your family can completely change a person, but what made this simple family man
such an effective assassin? As outrageous and insane the action sequences were,i liked them
and there are good and effective turns by Terrence Howard ,Dominic Cooper,F. Murray Abraham
and Isabelle Huppert, but DMD is at its best when Farrell and Noomi Rapace as Beatrice
are on screen together.I was never really sure what would happen between the two as their emotions
seasaw in various scenes.

Scale of 1-10 a 7½

Thanks for the 2 reviews, Joneblaze.

Sure thing regarding the Smashed review. Only real gripe there was it was too short. I would have preferred it that 20 - 25 mins longer overall. Otherwise ... good little flick.

Won passes to OZ - 3D last Wednesday ... we went and checked out A Good Day to Die Hard. It was ok and a bit better than expected. Definitely not a true Die Hard movie ... but yo ... that car chase in the first 1/3 of the film is DOPE. Easily the highlight of the show. Mad vehicles get wrecked.

Dial 1119 (1950)

A former mental patient murders a bus driver, then takes refuge in a bar, where he holds the patrons hostage.

Really very good black and white joint.

Man i just watched Django unchained, it's was strait...that Oz movie caught my attention, might watch it in a minute...

With my viewing preferences being a heist or gangster flick, it's hard to just jump in willy-nilly and watch anything. Gotta have a little four play before the fact, if you catch my drift.

Sound City - documentary released in Jan. 2013.

Good one ... focuses plenty on the stuff from the 60s - 2011 or so. Especially the 60s - early-90s.

Tension(1949)

A meek pharmacist creates an alternate identity under which he plans to murder the bullying liquor salesman who has become his wife's lover.

Very good movie.

- The Perks of Being a Wallflower

I'm watching this right now. About an hour into it and this shit is damn good. Its not like those other cheesy high school flicks. Thanks for the recommendation.

Sure thing, man. It was well received last year. What I respected the most was the believable performance from the lead actor. He did a good job, and left you as a viewer pulling for him to succeed moving forward.

Caught two Sir Laurence Olivier movies yesterday, one directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

Rebecca(1940)

A shy ladies' companion, staying in Monte Carlo with her stuffy employer, meets the wealthy Maxim de Winter. She and Max fall in love, marry and return to Manderley, his large country estate in Cornwall. Max is still troubled by the death of his first wife, Rebecca, in a boating accident the year before. The second Mrs. de Winter clashes with the housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers, and discovers that Rebecca still has a strange hold on everyone at Manderley

A little long for me but it was decent.

Marathon Man(1976)

In New York City, the brother of an infamous Nazi war criminal is killed in a head on collision car accident. Shortly thereafter, members of a covert US government group called "The Division" begin to be murdered one by one. When the brother to one Division member sees his brother knifed to death, it is revealed that former SS dentist Szell, "the White Angel" of Auschwitz, is wrapping up loose ends to smuggle priceless diamonds from the United States.

Also starred Dustin Hoffman and Roy Scheider.
Over 30 yrs later, the torture scene will still make your cringe. Not being graphic, your imagination fills in the blanks, making it much worse than anything they could have shown on the screen.

No problem and thanks.
As I've become more and more of a movie person, it only makes sense to see the movies so many great stars and creators cite as their inspirations.
If you haven't seen it already, watch Vertigo by Hitchcock.

Well said, man. That's the thing ... many of us are children of the 60s, 70s, and 80s ... so we missed out on decades of cool shit before us (music & movies). When I'm talking with family or friends and they reference stuff 10 - 30 years before my time that I never got around to ... I just laugh and remind them I'm a kid born in '79 (so an '80s baby). I know a shit ton about pop culture and whatnot from the 80s and 90s 'cuz that's what I grew up on. But start asking me that 50s - 70s stuff ... and I'm pretty much at a loss :D

Spring Breakers

Spring Breakers is part cautionary tale of the evils of spring break and part hazy, neon,
fantasy of reckless abandon.
The quartet of ladies Selena Gomez as Faith,Vanessa Hudgens as Candy Ashley Benson as Brit and
Rachel Korine as Cotty do a fine job in the film as girls, longing for a change of scenery, more from
life and to party by any means neccessary. Hudgens and Gomez do their best to shed their Disney
good girl images, but it's James Franco as the rapper/drug dealer/thief Alien who steals the show.
He is a cross between Robert Deniro's Max Cady in Cape Fear and Gary Oldman's Drexl Spivey in
True Romance, and Franco embraces and loses himself in the the role.

When the ladies slip into the radar and glare of his gold and silver teeth, the fact that i was never really
sure of his intentions for them and the way Director Harmony Korine cleverly jumps back and forth
with brief shots of whats to come created a good deal of suspense.Korine does his best to make the audience feel
a part of the action of spring break and the characters experience with close up and voyeur shots.
The elation the ladies hold on to from an early feat in the film made them unpredictable, especially when guns
are drawn or played with.

There is no real narrative to SB,the script is repetitive and then some and my screening audience
was audibly turned off by its repetitive flow.
In the end SB is definitely not a great movie but its like a wild night you place in the back of your mind
and when you recall it brings a smile to your face.

Scale of 1-10 a 7½

Joneblaze - Thanks for the early review on Spring Breakers. It's getting a decent amount of buzz locally, with the screenings starting soon. Bikinis all day - check.

Same here.:D Then the roles are reversed when I talk to my younger 20 something siblings or younger coworkers or friends.
The one thing I've noticed watching the older flicks is how many times I say "Oh, that's where Spike (or fill in the blank director) got that from."
