MOVIES ~ Any of ya'll seen any good (or shitty) movies in recent weeks/months? Post reviews, feedback, movie news, trailers, recommendations, etc ...

show us a starting point.

Not sure where the best places are in the U.S. being a Canadian, but I've been contesting since 1999 (but heavily since 2003) and the best places to look for your region (and nationally) for all contests =

- Local newspapers
- Blogs for your city or state (here in Canada they often target markets like Toronto, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Vancouver, and Edmonton for their events)
- Facebook
- Twitter
- The movie studios and sponsors' pages on FB & Twitter respectively
- Entertainment sites (for Canadians many of them are based in Toronto, but open to the rest of us in other provinces and shit)
- Entertainment magazines

Django Unchained - got around to it yesterday.

Saw "Mama" Saturday and enjoyed it. Creepy, Del Toro style movie with a typical hard, bittersweet Del Toro ending.

On "Horrible Bosses"
Charlie Day can be a breakout star off that movie.

True. He's got that spastic role down pat over the years on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He also teamed up with Jason Sudeikis (from SNL) back in 2011 in that Going The Distance movie. That was the one with Drew Barrymore. Won free tickets to that joint back in Aug' or Sept' of that year.

The Possession of David O'Reilly (2010)

A supernatural shockumentary about a demonic presence in a young couple's home in London.

This was better than I expected but the IMDB synopsis^^^^ is wrong.

It's more a guy coming off a bad breakup is sleeping over at his friend's place and starts seeing demons. It's pretty intense and we can't tell if he's imagining them or if they're real until the very final shot of the movie.

Looking to win passes to A Good Day to Die Hard. That one takes place on Feb. 13th.

Otherwise, gonna watch Silver Linings Playbook and The Hobbit soon.

Bullet To the Head

Bullet_to_the_Head_Poster.jpg

Sylvester Stallone sleepwalks through this very basic and for the most part dull action flick.
Even the axe fight which i was looking forward to,is lackluster.
Scale of 1-10 a 5

Young Adam

Young_Adam_movie.jpg

Bleak but honest story of an amoral drifter, who faces a dilemna that could
alter his life forever

Scale of 1-10 an 8

Paul Williams Still Alive

PaulWilliams_StillAlive_Poster.jpg

Engrossing and interesting documentary of the multi-talented Williams, and how
even the brightest stars in Hollywood can slowly fade away.

Scale of 1-10 a 10

MOVIE 43

Movie_43_poster.jpg

An extremely vulgar version of Saturday Night Live, but just like SNL
some of the sketches are very funny and some are painfully unfunny and go on to
long.

Scale of 1-10 a 6½

Won passes to Beautiful Creatures for Wednesday. Gonna probably see the original JAWS once there (it's part of a digital film festival - probably slightly re-mastered). Should be fun on the big screen. Only saw it a few times on VHS & tv in the 80s and 90s :D

Won passes to Beautiful Creatures on Wednesday. We went and checked out JAWS (Digital Film Fest) instead. That was fun. Slightly re-mastered or digitized, or whatever they call it. Looked sharper. I had only ever watched the movie on VHS before, so this did it justice (hard to believe it's almost 40 years old now). People applauded the "We're gonna need a bigger boat!" line  .

Checked out Silver Linings Playbook dvd-style yesterday and enjoyed it.

Trying to win passes for A Good Day to Die Hard (screening is taking place next Wed').

SIDE EFFECTS

SideEffects2013Poster.jpg

Director Steven Soderbergh and writer Scott Z. Burns enter the world of Pharmaceuticals and Psychiatry
and craft a smart and entertaining thriller around it.Fun and sexy twists abound in this Hitchcockian like
film.Aside from some predictable turns its a well acted film with a likeable cast that includes :Jude Law ,Rooney Mara,
Channing Tatum, and Catherine Zeta-Jones (I had forgotten how sexy she can be).
If this is truly Soderbergh's last film,he has left movie lovers with quite an intriguing finale.

Scale of 1-10 an 8

- Catching up on a few porn scenes of late

- Didn't win tickets to A Good Day to Die Hard (screening would have been yesterday)

- Aiming to win some for Oz - The Great and the Powerful - 3D (early-March)

- etc.

A Good Day to Die Hard

A_Good_Day_to_Die_Hard.jpg

I can just imagine the brainstorming session to come up with ideas for the 5th Die Hard
film A Good Day to Die Hard. Remember that nice family picture in the first film?
That's right John McClane had a son.Let's have him hook up with his son with whom
he's estranged ,they team up and bond while taking on some Russian baddies who
want goodies from Chernobyl.

Speaking of the baddies the villains in the film had an interesting vibe to them and may have had
cool backstories but i have a feeling most of it ended up on an editing room floor
I can watch Bruce Willis do anything big fan since T.V'S Moonlighting.Willis mainly goes
through the motions in this one but some of his charisma still shines through.
Jai Courtney as John "Jack" McClane, Jr. is not fleshed out enough to care about.
There are some great action sequences as we watch father and son and their CGI doubles get thrown
around in all kinds of crazy but i admit fun stunts.

In the end i think the producers took the easy why bother with a strong story route.
The main star has returned,we have the built in fan base and Die Hard name,so not much effort
is needed, unfortunately its the audience that loses.

Scale of 1-10 a 5 ½

Saw Die Hard 5. It wasnt big on story, but nevertheless entertaining. Great Action, and some scenes were funny. Thought it was better than Die Hard 4. It was short and to the point.

Watched 21 Jump Street and Ted on dvd. Enjoyed 21 Jump Street more (writing was a bit funnier).

Won passes to DARK SKIES for this Thursday evening.

Jack the Giant Slayer

Jack_the_Giant_Slayer_poster.jpg

The legendary story of Jack and the beanstalk in the film Jack the Giant Slayer ,takes its
time to get going.Nicholas Hoult as Jack is likeable enough for you to root for him,but the film
has such a drawn out beginning ,i found myself saying lets get to the beanstalk and the giants already!!
There are some fun and adventurous moments but not enough wit or peril to truly hold my attention
for its almost 2 hour running time.

Scale of 1-10 a 7

Pariah

Pariah_FilmPoster.jpeg

As her family grows apart 17 year old Alike (Adepero Oduye) begins to embrace her sexuality and begins a relationship and has
to deal with all of the changes and turmoil that come with the aforementioned.

Scale of 1-10 a 10

The Sweeney

Movies_the_sweeney_poster.jpg

If you liked the films Heat or The Town you will definitely enjoy The Sweeney. Ray Winstone is terrific
as the leader of a unique group of cops that take on tough crews of thieves. There are a few
preposterous moments, but not enough to stop this from being a sleak British crime drama.

Scale of 1-10 an 8½

Killing Them Softly - Enjoyed it, although reviews at times have been mixed in recent months.

The Cabin in the Woods - Enjoyed it as well. Good slant/take on the genre. The final 20 mins or so were a bit far-fetched, but otherwise it was a fun ride.

Gonna check out the Breaking Bad XXX Parody, Identity Thief, Smashed, Life of Pi, and some others in the near future.

Hoping to win some passes for Oz - The Great and the Powerful - 3D. Screening's in the next week or two.
