MOVIES ~ Any of ya'll seen any good (or shitty) movies in recent weeks/months? Post reviews, feedback, movie news, trailers, recommendations, etc ...

i was watching this last night. i'm not sure whether i was too sleepy to pay attention to the complex plot or whether the movie fucking sucked. either way, i stopped after an hour

Let us know if you're able to get around to the 2nd half. It's a pretty good flick with solid buzz from most sources. Saw it back in September. Easily one of the better flicks from the time travel genre.

saw this earlier in the thread. decent flick

Kill-the-Irishman.jpg

Yeah - he was a fun character in the flick as he completely lightened the mood for the audience

Looper was pretty dope, right? Won passes to Judge Dredd on a Wednesday, and Looper on the following Monday and took a shorty to them. She dug them both which was cool as she gets down with the sci-if, action, thriller shit so it wasn't wasted on her √ - think it was back in September or so.

Gotta watch Dredd but Looper was good. Paradoxes on paradoxes...would love to see someone make a comic out of this on either side...

...laughing though that as a former junkie and retired, dude ain't get marred ONCE.

I just saw looper as well... The beginning is kinda throwed off, I had to watch it 3 times to make it past the 20min mark  but I'm glad I made it was an awesome movie

Life of pi was a good movie too

Now lawless, premium rush and most movies sucked this year :smh: about to check out dredd

With my wife home convalescing, we caught up on some movies on the dvr

THE MAN WITH A CLOAK (1951)

Boring title but good movie with surprise ending. Starring Joseph Cotten and Barbara Stanwyck (who has to be one of the all time great movie villains), two favorites.

In 1848, a young Frenchwoman, Madeline Minot, goes to New York City to see Thevenet, the grandfather of her fiance. Thevenet had been with Napoleon and may be sympathetic to the political aims of his grandson. She finds the old man in very bad spirits, living in a large house with a housekeeper and a butler who are just waiting for him to die (and perhaps helping him along a bit) so they can inherit his fortune. They see Madeline as a threat to their plans. She is aided in her dealings with these strange people by a mysterious man in a cloak.

BOOMERANG! (1947)

This dramatization of a factual incident opens in a quiet Connecticut town where a kindly priest is murdered while waiting at a street corner. The citizens are horrified and demand action from the police. All of the witnesses identify John Waldron, a nervous out-of-towner, as the killer. Although Waldron vehemently denies the crime, no one will believe him. District Attorney Henry Harvey is then put on the case and faces political opposition in his attempt to prove Waldron's innocence.

and something more modern

RED (2010)

I'm sure someone already posted this one so I don't need to do a summary. Good movie.

Yeah - Dredd was fun. Popcorn flick for sure. I only saw bits and pieces of the Stallone one from back in the mid-90s or so, so I wasn't able to compare the 2.

2 depressing ass movies, but good ones

These films may be “depressing”…but they are reality based. Too many Americans are living in the fantasy world that the — ‘television-media-of-mass-deception’ — injects into their psyches 24/7, 365 days a year. When you couple the television propaganda with the republiklan talk radio deception that blankets the nation’s airwaves— (Rush, Hannity, Beck, Savage, Boortz etc.) — you wind up with a frighteningly stupid white population, who blame the nation’s problems on Blacks & Latinos & Gays & Women — and who vote for a vulture capitalist RMoney who has made his hundreds of millions doing the very things depicted in these films. If you haven’t seen these films, see them as soon as possible

THE IMPOSSIBLE

550x298_Naomi-Watts-reveals-her-water-fears-for-The-Impossible-6666.jpg

Intense, gripping and at times emotionally overwhelming true story of Maria and Henry Belon and their 3 sons Lucas ,Thomas,
and Simon and their fight for survival after the devastating tsunami in Thailand on the morning of December 26, 2004.
Incredible performances by the entire cast are coupled with extraordinary SFX ,creating one of the most incredible movie watching experiences i have ever had.Director J.A. Bayona and Sergio G. Sánchez definitely capture the raw emotions and loss of that day and the days that followed.
The films only flaw are a few coincidental moments that dont ring true towards the end of the film.
Any nominations and awards the film gains are truly well deserved.

Glad you liked it too, Joneblaze. Caught the advance screening on Wednesday evening and enjoyed it as well. The effects were something else during the disaster. Very strong performance from Watts. Felt the oldest boy (about 10yo or so) was a bit too confident & self-assured given the devastating nature of the whole ordeal. The 2 younger boys were believable w/ their acting and overall emotions. Good acting from Ewan McGregor as well (especially during the scene in which he breaks down making the cellphone call). Just wish they would have shown more of the Thai people ... mind you ... it was a resort destination that was focused on with a grip of tourists, but I was glad to see more of a Thai influence once at the hospital and all the chaos revolving the rescue efforts of the many injured.

Also won passes to the advance screening of Zero Dark Thirty on Thursday evening (last night). Quite enjoyed it. Just make sure you've got yourself a comfortable seat, as it runs 2.5 hours +. Plenty of build-up over the years and the efforts from the C.I.A. and others as they plan their operation(s) towards the capture or death of Bin Laden. Good performances from Kyle Chandler and Jessica Chastain. Small role from James Gandolfini in the latter stages. The final 30 mins or so is quite intense given all the night vision utilization, and so on. Good job again from director Kathryn Bigelow. If you liked her work with The Hurt Locker ... you'll undoubtedly enjoy Zero Dark Thirty.

Strong local turnout. We got there around 6:10pm for the 7pm showing. 100 people already in line. Another 200 - 250 came after us. The 3 or so sponsors packed the 500-seat venue. Crowd response was positive. Good venue too ... huge amount of leg room & seats that tilt back. Always enjoy that venue downtown (free underground parking). Was there the night before for The Impossible too.

Glad you enjoyed both films 2012 was a really good year of solid film making

GANGSTER SQUAD

Gangster_Squad_Poster.jpg

Unlike other hat/gangster squad vs the mob/police corruption flicks like L.A Confidential,Mullholland Falls and
The Untouchables,Gangster Squad never takes itself to seriously. When the film goes for wit the aforementioned
works in its favor, but when the humor overtakes the dramatic moments the lack of seriousness hurts the film.

There is a tremendous amount of talent in the film (Josh Brolin,Ryan Gosling Sean Penn Emma Stone Nick Nolte
Anthony Mackie Giovanni Ribisi Michael Peña Robert Patrick and Mireille Enos but unfortunately they have a lukewarm script to work with.

The heavy make up used on Penn portraying gangster Mickey Cohen is a distraction. It reminded me
of one of Dick Tracy's enemies like Prune Face or Little Face. Not sure why they decided to do this since the real
Cohen basically looked like an everyday joe.Stone is basically a semi damsel in distress in the film.
Why such a talented actress would take such a minimal role is beyond me ,even Stone has joked about how small the role
is in recent press junkets for the film.

The first half of GS is fun,the second half is predictable, badly edited and anything that could have been suspenseful
is diluted by the films ho-hum approach.

Thanks, JB. Definitely some good titles in 2012. I still need to get caught up on some of the bigger blockbusters from spring/summer. Thanks for the intel regarding Gangster Squad. IF I did end up winning ROE passes for it ... I guess we'll probably just wander over into The Hobbit instead

Had a laugh yesterday talking movies with pops. He's notoriously a tough 'critic' of sorts. Scores many of them 6 - 7. An 8 rating is rare. He said he saw Promised Land with his gf and gave it a 5. We were talking about ZERO DARK THIRTY just beforehand, and I wanted his rating on that joint ... and he gave me the 5. I was like - "The hell you talking about?" His reply - "Oh ... the 5 was for Promised Land. I gave Zero Dark Thirty a 9. Yeah ... it was solid. Sorry about that."

PESCADOR

pescador-de-sebastian-cordero.jpg

Im glad i found this little film while scanning HBO ONDEMAND titles.
It's a charming, humorous suspenseful tale of Blanquito a fisherman, who finds a few kilos of cocaine
on a beach.Always looking at the bigger picture he decides to sell it to a buyer outside of his
village in Ecuador.Along the way he attempts to connect with a man who may be his father and falls for
the woman who accompanies him ,and says she can find a buyer for the cocaine.

Seen a bunch of movies of late.

- Premium Rush on dvd - fun flick. Fast-paced.

- Shame on dvd - Good amount of T&A. Brave role for Fassbender.

- The Impossible - free passes last Wed' - Quite intense given the events of late-December 2004.

- Zero Dark Thirty - free passes last Thurs' - Easily one of the better films in recent years.

- The Last Stand - free passes this past Wed' - Knoxville was funny / surprised Arnold remembered his lines. Fun, cliched movie.

- On The Road - free passes this past Thurs' - Sure was plenty of drinking, drugs, fucking and whatnot in the late-1940s and early-50s with this crowd. Surprised at the small roles from the supporting cast too (Viggo Mortensen / Kirsten Dunst / Steve Buscemi / Elisabeth Moss, etc).

They did a good job with the effects/graphics showing the sheer ferocity of the tsunami's impact. Solid work from Naomi Watts. Enjoyed the emotion(s) shown by the 2 younger kids and dad (Ewan McGregor). Felt the older kid was a bit too calm & collected given the grave nature of the ordeal. Supposedly the kid actor playing the role is 15/16yo (playing about 10 - 12). Thought the hospital scenes were pretty intense too (without being overly gruesome or graphic).

Watched the CATFISH movie the other day. It aired on MTV Canada, and it was interesting to see the original doc' the current MTV tv series is based upon (given how fucked up some of the stories have been upon people meeting & having been duped).

Also re-watched END OF WATCH with pops. He had wanted to see it ... and I didn't mind checking it out again (saw it on the big screen back around Aug. or Sept. 2012).

THE LAST STAND

Last_Stand_2013.jpg

Arnold Schwarzenegger is back as promised and in a role that fits him like a well worn glove.
In The Last Stand he portrays Sheriff Ray Owens who watches over the quiet town of
Sommerton Junction, Arizona. The biggest problem in the town are cars parked in the wrong zone
until a drug kingpin Eduardo Noriega as Gabriel Cortez escapes from the FEDS and heads straight
for Sommerton.

One of the things i really liked about TLS is the shift in gears between the FBI and the smalltown
Sheriff and his deputies.Arnie is moving a little slower and his face is looking a bit more weathered
but no one wields a shotgun quite like him on the big screen. The specially outfitted car, a Chevrolet
Corvette C6 ZR1 is one of the coolest cars since K.I.T.T on Knight Rider and any of the Batmobiles

The villains main goal in the film is kind of flimsy, and i cant believe it took 3 writers to come up with
the basic script for the film.

TLS is a fun action romp.If your a Schwarzenegger you will love it,just dont go in thinking
you are going to see something Oscar worthy

Haven't seen any flicks this week. Was hoping to win passes to Hansel & G for this evening (Thursday). Gonna aim to see Django on Sunday.
