"On 16 December, Messi scored twice in a 4–1 Barcelona victory against Atlético Madrid, increasing his record to 90 goals. The tally found its end at 91 goals in a year after Messi scored once against Real Valladolid."

Too little too frail; this is why Mano Menezes who hitched his wagon to the boy is gone, and has been replaced by Felipe Scolari...Even then, Brazil, who have fallen to number 18 in the Fifa ranking stand in danger of following South Africa out of the first round of the world cup if they continue with their mediocrity
Hell Maradonna was small too. Y'all just wait, my dude is going to shock the world with his dominance.
i hope so. but until then he aint done nothing yet.
ronaldihno made me watch soccer.
Currently, he is the best player in the world and probably the best player we have seen in the last 10 years. But he has a free role at the best club in the world, with two of the best midfielders of this generation (Xavi and Iniesta) passing it to him.
If you look at the game's history, the greats have been defined by what they do on the international stage. To this point, Messi hasn't delivered. He's still young and Argentina have a ton of talent coming through, so he will have his opportunity.
Is the International stage today as great as it was 50 years ago though?
I'd beg to differ.
Club football spots millionaires in every position today. Making the first team for the Ivory Coast isn't the same thing as making the first team at Chelsea or Real Madrid. 99% of people wouldn't be able to name the RB for Serbia or Japan, but will easily name the starting 11 for Arsenal or Man U.
While history has dictated that greatness equals World Cup trophies, i'd argue that the paradigm has shifted, and that Messi is dominating all in front of him.
That Brazilian dream team made me start watching soccer. Hell bgol introduced me to the game.I've been watching it since.

yeah but see your point can be said for football overall. the game has gotten faster but the quality has taking a hit. the best years of football for me was late 80s to early 2000. every team then had a super star. the game has also gotten much more easier for strikers. with all the new rules and thing. a messi in the 90s would have made it they would have chopped him up before he even made contact with the ball.Is the International stage today as great as it was 50 years ago though?

ok. see the thing is ronaldo had what ronaldino got and what messi got. you couldnt take the ball from him. he was strong as a horse and fast as shit. he was a complete player. that makes him the best to me.keone, my problem with ronaldo is that his lack of finesse. Football is a game artistry and finesse. Ronaldinho has finesse. Messi has finesse. He was a very effective player though.
Is he in Europe yet?

nopes and thats what im waitng for. but dude gets payed a lot of money in brazil so its really up to him if he decides to become the best. because he sure dont need the cash. but you cant be the best if you dont play in the best ;leagues. thats like saying that bballer in italy is the best. how can he be the best and he dont even play in the NBA.
This. He's still a second-tier all-time great until he delivers at the world cup. Argentina still ranks Maradona over him because of that.
absolutely..........
I even prefer his now retired countryman Gabriel Batistuta.
killer batigoal but he was a pure striker messi isnt really a striker.
absolutely..........
yes I know and that is why I didnt make a direct comparison as one is a forward and the other is a striker.
I just think that Battigol was dangerous from more positions than Messi is.
I can see why people would disagree with me though and thats fine.
International football has taken a hit recently, I agree. But your point is sort of my point. It's easy to dominate La Liga and the Champions League when your club can afford to put millionaires at every position, especially in La Liga where the revenue distribution favors Barcelona and Madrid the way it does. And while the majority of Barcelona's standout players came through their academy, they have spent nearly as much in the transfer market as the clubs that get criticized for it.
Messi is dominating all in front of him, yes. But we can't ignore the fact that his club team is currently one of the best we have ever seen, with players that have played important roles in Spain winning the last three international competitions.
And because people probably cannot name some of the players that play for Argentina, wouldn't him leading them to international glory erase all doubt that his name belongs up alongside those that have?

bitch nigga u came in this thread too
fuck is u sayin
Here's an article....
"Four-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi says the one thing missing from his trophy cabinet is the World Cup, claiming he would swap his personal awards for success at national team level."

I’ve been watching this game a long time, a long long time….
Messi (granted he’s stil playing), but he's a long long way off from being the Greatest ever.
There are some people posting here that know the game, e.g., World Cup not being what it once was. With that being said, the 1958 FIFA World Cup, the sixth staging of the World Cup, was hosted by Sweden from 8 to 29 June. The tournament was won by Brazil, who beat Sweden 5–2 in the final for their first title. To date, this marks the only occasion that a World Cup staged in Europe was not won by a European team. Pele was in this team. They practically kicked him off the pitch, leaving in tears (look for the video, it's out there).
Ya'll gotta know more about the game before you talk about Messi. Messi is the modern day white boy hype.
Pele would destroy people on the pitch. I mean destroy.
Sticking to Brazil, ya'll do know that Ronaldo was juicing back then; hence the severe injuries that eventually destroyed his game. Do ya research.
Look, even Messi knows it.... Need that World Cup to be called The Greatest son. Until then, Edison Arantes do Nascimento is muh man!!!!

Not so sure about that one. No Gerd Muller !!!
There were some great players held in higher regards than Messi who has never won a world cup as well. e.g Cryuff, George Best,Platini etc.
maybe u right. but for me personally i dont think so. the reason why i say this is because a lot of the players cant stand playing hardball. hell even ex footballers are saying it. would messi go through 6 pepe's? maybe me personally dont think so. chelsea proved that one to me over and over. u see how frustrated he becomes playing against chelsea. nothing seems to work then.Hmmm... has the quality taken a hit though? Teams today seem to be more technically astute, and are being pressured to have greater first touches, larger fields of vision, and greater ability on the ball.
Yea the rules may favor a striker a little more these days with less physical contact, but that doesn't mean that Messi doesn't catch a case every time he's on the ball.
Ask this guy...

I'm a firm believer that greats can compete in any time frame. Di Stefano could compete today as Messi could compete back then, because they're simply great players. They take what's in front of them, and manipulate it to their bidding to the best of their ability.
That's just what great players do in any generation I think.
