Spike has made some great films...films that were important to my experience as a young black man...he's a good director...but he's also made some bullshit that made me go "WTF?" He's earned a voice...and he uses it how he sees fit. I often disagree with him, but I respect what he's done. That said, Quinton Tarantino has also made some great films. Some GREAT films. He's a good director. I saw Django and it was good as fuck. I think the 800 pound gorilla in the room with all this anger over Django is that a white director made a fictional movie about slavery...and Spike and the rest of the other black directors didn't. Spike need to man up...get Oprah and Denzel to put some money up and do a movie of the Autobiography of Fredrick Douglas or a Nat Turner flick if he wants to honor his ancestors. do we really have enough to start a new studio distribution network in the US? One powerful enough to break the existing agreements between the studios and the major chains like AMC National Amusments etc... Cause right now the Jews have that monopoly and are very effective at blocking movies and sabotaging feature releases.

Spike lee personally is an extremely polarizing person and has been damn near since he came out in 1986. Dude has been pissing people off both black and white for a looong fucking time and the few big box office films he has had mainly hit based off the strength of his star actor Denzel Washington or for his earlier works because he was the new flavor at the time.

Tarantino has a different dynamic totally so comparing them is like comparing a white ball player in the major leagues vs a black ball player in the negro leagues and saying the white ball player is better because he plays in bigger stadiums and has won a couple of world series.

For what it's worth I saw it in red state Alabama and you could hear a pin drop during those scenes. And there was a audible gasp from the audience especially this white woman sitting behind me during the DiCaprio scene at the end where he had a hammer to Kerry Washington's head.

And just one final observation at the criticism I see hurled at the movie that people seem to be missing, at least from my POV. It's not totally accurate to call this a parody of slavery because it makes it seem as if it is a parody of the plight of the slave experience. When what it is and actually did well was point out how ridiculous slavery was -- and insidious when it came to the Mandingo scenes. That it used humor during less weighty scenes to do it was what was provacotive.

But if you see it there wasn't one white person, save Christoph Waltz that came out looking good or particularly smart. Speaking strictly in a filmic sense it was the Jamie Foxx role who stood the strongest and had the audience cheering at the end. While the first act had humor built into the lead character it was anything but parody by the end.

In my theater, it was mixed black and white and the dog scene and mandingo fight scene had some people gasping with no laughter at all...as far as Sam Jackson, people laughed but I rarely did...I didn't find his Sambo-ish behavior funny at all...it was my most hated character of the movie really
