Meet Sen. Tim Scott: The Tea Party Lawmaker Who Wanted To Impeach President Obama And Kick Kids Off Food Stamps

America’s newest senator today after getting tapped by South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) to fill the vacancy left by former Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC). DeMint announced this month that he was leaving the Senate to head up the Heritage Foundation, an arch-conservative think tank in Washington DC.

Though DeMint left big, controversial shoes to fill for Republicans, few conservatives will be disappointed with Scott’s record. Elected to Congress just two years ago in the Tea Party wave, Scott has already garnered headlines for his plan to impeach President Obama, his legislation to cut off union members’ children from food stamps, and his defense of Big Oil.

Here’s a quick look at Scott’s record:

* Floated impeaching Obama over the debt ceiling. As the debt ceiling debate raged in the summer of 2011 because of the intransigence of Tea Party freshmen like Scott, the nation inched perilously close to defaulting on its obligations. One option discussed by some officials to avoid that scenario was for the president to assert that the debt ceiling itself was an unconstitutional infringement on the 14th Amendment. However, Tim Scott told a South Carolina Tea Party group that if Obama were to go this route, it would be an “impeachable act.”

* Proposed a bill to cut off food stamps for entire families if one member went on strike. One of the most anti-union members of Congress, Scott proposed a bill two months after entering Congress in 2011 to kick families off food stamps if one adult were participating in a strike. Scott’s legislation made no exception for children or other dependents.

* Wanted to spend an unlimited amount of money to display Ten Commandments outside county building. When Scott was on the Charleston County Council, one of his primary issues was displaying the Ten Commandments outside the Council building. According to the Augusta Chronicle, Scott said the display “would remind council members and speakers the moral absolutes they should follow.” When he was sued for violating the Constitution and a Circuit Judge’s orders, Scott was nonplussed: “Whatever it costs in the pursuit of this goal (of displaying the Commandments) is worth it.”

* Defended fairness of giving billions in subsidies to Big Oil. Scott and his Republican allies in Congress voted repeatedly last year to protect more than $50 billion in taxpayer subsidies for Big Oil corporations. When ThinkProgress asked Scott whether it was fair to do that, especially at a time when oil companies are earning tens of billions in profit every quarter, the Tea Party freshman defended the industry: “fair is a relative word,” said Scott.

* Helped slash South Carolina’s HIV/AIDS budget. As a state representative, Scott backed a proposal to cut the state’s entire HIV/AIDS budget, despite the fact that South Carolina ranks in the top-third of reported AIDS cases. The cuts were ultimately included in the state’s budget, impacting more than 2,000 HIV-positive South Carolinians who needed help paying for their medication.

Re: Nikki Haley will appoint Tim Scott & will be the lone African American in the Sen

Don't know much about Tim Scott, but I keep hearing that he's not an idealogue. If he's got some sense and won't tow the Tea Party line, this could wind up being a smart move for the Republicans; singaling their shift to the center.

I'm happy to see the brother get an opportunity, but I'm wondering how much of an opportunity it will really be, because he's going to have to run for that seat in the mid-terms if I'm not mistaken. So, if he stands on his own and doesn't tow the line, will he be primaried? Or will they let him be; not wanting to ostracize the one black face they'll have on the Republican side of the Senate?

EDIT: Shit. Nevermind. Just saw Hot Sauce's post. He's as crazy as the rest of 'em. He'll fit right in.

No worries man. He's been a solid Tea Party guy since being elected to Congress. He just never felt the need to make crazy statements and court the press like Allen West. Yes, he does have to run for a full term in 2014. Republicans aren't afraid of ostracizing Black folks. If he isn't seen to be as strong of a conservative as Jim DeMint was, they will surely give him a primary opponent.

Re: Nikki Haley will appoint Tim Scott & will be the lone African American in the Sen

Good for him but means nothing for me. He's a Tea Party guy.

damn there goes the stereotype that all republican coons have the same haircut :lol::lol::lol::lol:

Re: Nikki Haley will appoint Tim Scott & will be the lone African American in the Sen

Haley, the state’s first Indian-American governor and first female governor, said she picked Scott because of his merits and not his racial identity.

“It is important to me, as a minority female, that Congressman Scott earned this seat,” Haley said. “He earned this seat for the person that he is. He earned this seat with the results he has shown.”
:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

It's going to cost me coin to get rid of this coon ass punk ass muhfuhkah. He's got about as much chance of being elected as does my sig...

Scott is a republican. He won his congressional seat by landslide. He will likely win his Senate election in 2014 unless he does something outrageous.

It's funny how Gov. Nikki Haley proclaims herself as a "minority", when she classify herself as white on her voter's registration form.

Re: Nikki Haley will appoint Tim Scott & will be the lone African American in the Sen

There goes another democratic senate seat in the waiting. Granted it would be tough to get rid if that scum bag Lindsey, I like our chances.

Doubt it. Any Democrat that could beat Scott in SC would probably be worse than Scott, one of those Blue Dogs. He's Black but he's Tea Party and knows how to talk crazy to appease the White folks.

In his case, I don't think he had a choice. Look at that hairline.

He is a by product of "White Men" mentoring "Black Kids". This is why I stress to cats on this board that they need to become mentors. Most cats talk shit all day on this board, but don't fight the good fight.

Yup I know...his old boss at Chik Fil A was his mentor and he's been misguided ever since.

Re: Nikki Haley will appoint Tim Scott & will be the lone African American in the Sen

Basically just a Jim DeMint in blackface.

why are you all surprised? conservatives will trim the fat to make sure that the flow of money flowing towards the 1% isn't diminished. race is not a barrier to these folk. like so many black folk in positions of authority or entitlement, he will go after his own people with ferocity to show his fealty to those white conservatives. there is a scale of conservatism like everything else. he falls just below race loyalty and poverty empathy....just below

How about this one. There were major irregularities and fraud committed during the last presidential election. The outcome was unclear and it resulted in the presidency being stolen from tRump. In spite of the fact that their own repub criminal justice and voting administration officials denied there was any significant fraud many cosigned and echoed that message leading to the Jan 6 event at the capital. They all know it was a lie, but use it as an excuse to enact additional rules and restrictions as necessary to insure the integrity of voting systems. Does that all seem like ancient history to you.

Is this a GOP talking point or a belief of some Republicans? As you stated, not all republicans believed the election was "stolen."

Remember that some Democrats have stated that "all lives matter." Does that make it a talking point because some have/ had this opinion?

What made it a talking point was the lack of any basis in fact while at the same time being repeated over and over. The election officials, the state attorneys generals, and ultimately state and federal courts said there was no proof of it. That didn't stop much of the GOP leadership from continuously repeating the lie right up to, and even after Jan 6. They continued it simply because it motivated their base and kept those "stop the steal" funds flowing. Now they've parlayed that into a new talking point that, we must act to protect the integrity of voting systems. This is in spite of just having the most secure election with the greatest participation in recent memory. "If its not broke, we must immediately break it."

@Tito_Jackson , this is an interesting report about a rpub legislator in PA that championed the voter fraud lie, and finally admitted the only fraud they found was inconsequencial and committed by fellow rpubs. That didn't stop him from continuing to cast dispersion and doubt about the results so they could justify changing the voting processes in all the ways that give their party an advantage. It is pure and utter subversion.
