The main thing I tell people is never join for something material. There are much easier ways to get college money, job training, a paycheck, or anything else that's tangible. Risking your life shouldn't be for such superficial reason.

Other than that, it's not a bad decision for a young person trying to find direction.

Advice for those considering joining the military

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King would call him part of "the forces of interposition and nullification" - i.e. a state's rightist who would ultimately deny the primacy of the Federal government and would be not only in favour of allowing slavery if a state wanted it, but also segregation in public places and official discrimination.

By expousing an "originalist" interpretation of the constitution, he's denying 240+ years of development and nuanced interpretation by several hundred Supreme Court justices - which is all for a purpose. There is also a strong thread of isolationism, which can only lead to disaster. The United States has engaged the world since the time of the Revolution. I'm sure "the Constitution" does not approve of the war in Vietnam or Panama or Afghanistan - just like it did not approve of expansion into the Ohio Valley, or the Louisiana Purchase or the attack on Spain which got us Puerto Rico or the illegal activities that won Hawaii.
