Could Texas Really Secede From The Union? The Answer Is…

MASTERBAKER

DEMOTED MOD
BGOL Investor
NO

But:

Texas was an independent nation for a decade

Texas had its own Presidents

If Texas was an independent country today it would be the 46th largest country in the world by population

It would be the 13th largest economy in the world

How would you explain why this country is still in Afghanistan after 10 years?

I'm jus sayin.

Texas could implement a 'humble' foreign policy, no nation-building, No Wars Of Aggression, no policing the world. With the installation of a "sound" currency, they would be just fine!

The problem is simply with those who desire to impose democracy at the barrel of a gun

No they couldn't.

The answer is a simple "no".

No.....what? What are we refuting?

I'm responding to a statement, let me re-quote

Texas would fold in a New York minute

All I'm sayin is; Why didn't this happen in Afghanistan?

They aint got a Navy, Air Force & they broke as hell. AND WE ARE STILL THERE!

Real World, after 10 years, we are still there

I'm refuting the idea that the Republic of Texas could do any of those things you say they could.
After millions of their current citizens leave and decide they want to be Americans and not Texans, it would fold quickly and be reabsorbed back into Mexico or beg to come back here.

We're not there fighting the nation of Afghanistan. We won that war over a decade ago. We're there, wasting money and able bodied men and women, on some foolish nation building operation, though we've seemed to move away from that in recent years.

You mixed in a completely unrelated situation with nothing even slightly in common.

afghan is not a new nation. the people are used to military action. comparing apples to oranges

you must be from texas. tx would lose 40-70% of its population if they seceeded

I don't know if they could or not. However, I know they have enough land, labor & capital to be productive. Wow, 13th largest economy. Of course, these may be some of the same things the Britians said in response to british Americans refusing to pay "tea tax". Secession is a very 'healthy' concept!

You neglected the fact that many would be drawn to the state, and quite possibly, surrounding areas! Why won't the Union just cut the dead weight? (I read Thought's posts about illiteracy & welfare in southern states)

Explain to me how Texas would 'fold'?

declare victory, bring our young men & women home ASAP. War is the enemy of the Poor

post 2 introduced military solutions to secession, not me!

Some would leave but how many would be attracted?

Texass would last 5 minutes without that evil government money!

They don't produce now so why would it be different as a separate nation?
That 13th nation status would collapse quickly with most of their population staying in America and the US pulling it's billions of dollars of support.

Didn't neglect it, just know that it won't balance out. They won't attract millions but they will lose millions.

I'm on board with that.

You made the Afghanistan comparison.

You can bet the first question on the referendum would be to bring slavery back. Hell the right wingers want to abolish the minimum wage any way. And I would bet it would win by a landslide!

Gee. This "Post Racial-America" (America - after a Black man and his family has officially soiled the White House's linen) is so historically interesting!!! So many historically significant terms and concepts surfacing anew: birthright, who is a U.S. citizen, secession . . .
