*Last night, I was watching my copy of the very important film, “Hoodwinked,” by Janks Morton. I appear in the film, along with my respected colleagues, Drs. Marc Lamont Hill, Jawanza Kunjufu, Ivory Toldson and Steve Perry.

The film serves to debunk many of the ridiculous myths that black people perpetuate against one another, particularly those affecting black men. For one thing, the film explores the notion that the black male high school dropout rate is nearly half, when in fact, it’s less than 10 percent.

Janks attributes much of the disparity to funny math that comes into play when a dropout is counted as someone who didn’t graduate with his/her cohort. In many cases, black children either transfer to different schools or use a relative’s address to get away from the horrible inner city school in their district. Morton even shows that from 2006 – 2008, black females had a higher dropout rate than African American males.

We don’t want to celebrate anyone dropping out of high school and we certainly don’t want to add to the battle of the sexes between black men and black women. The point is that black men are not nearly as sad and pathetic as many people would like to believe that we are. Many of us are as productive, educated and conscientious as anyone else, no matter what President Obama said about us during his 2008 Father’s Day speech.

I enjoyed and appreciated what Janks was attempting to do with this film. In many cases, we want to believe the absolute worst when it comes to black males. Black men are sometimes treated as the rodents of our society, and no one wants a rodent to survive or even exist. Some black women want to believe that all of us are either gay or running around with white women, and many white folks want to believe that we are all criminals.

I’ve never been gay, criminal or with a white woman, and neither have most of my friends. So, for those who feel the need to project venom toward the image of the black male in America, you must realize that in order to be the creator of this kind of venom, your mind may have been poisoned as well. That’s where brainwashing causes you to hate people who look like yourself.

“Hoodwinked” excited me because when I saw Marc, Steve, Ivory and Jawanza using their vast intellectual skills to protect other black men, I swelled up with pride, like an intellectual warrior standing alongside his brothers waging war against ignorance on the battlefield. Black men have the ability to work together and do great things, whether it’s on the basketball court or in the classroom. When we stick together, we usually defeat all enemies great and small. The key is remembering to fight with our minds instead of our fists.

A new day is coming in black America. With the democratization of media that has occurred via the Internet, films like “Hoodwinked” can surpass the large, white media distribution companies and share messages with the black community that are more accurate to our purpose. We can find out who we really are and share genuine love and support for one another. In other words, we get to define and celebrate the vast potential that lies within our greatness, and we are no longer going to continue to be hoodwinked into thinking that we are inferior. Now that’s what I’m talking about.

I wonder if this is going to report the same thing as 'What do black men think' already addressed as myths against black men

I'm sorry to say, but this movie will get about as much support as this thread.

I would understand if this was something different, but its really rehashing the same shit other documentaries, which most of the people even on this board, have done repeatedly... including one with Mario Van Peebles which sought to use the very same stereotyping myths in order to scare black men in line...

It doesn't go anywhere because the people which they are trying to reach don't give a shit about themselves to care about what is wrong with their people.

This board is a perfect example... because, not only are most of the inhabitants non black, they also don't really like black people as well since they love to cling to all others which are not their people, all other cultures which are not theirs, etc.

pretty much :dunno:

Not taking anything away from blacks. I feel it when someone disrespects black being that I am a dark skin Puerto Rican with Afro centric features. I see it in the Latino community dark vs.light. looking forward to watching this film.

There are a few documentaries which you could watch... and I feel you on the latino community bullshit, lived through it once myself.

you know that there is a reason for your afrocentric features right?

I didn't know this is how they counted the dropout rate, but I knew that these numbers had to be skewed. When I graduated in '90 some of the dudes I started school with in the 9th grade was not in my high school (Glenville HS, Cleveland) by the time of graduation, but I would say that 95-98% of us graduated. Alot transferred to other school to play sports or parent(s) just moved away. Enlighting......

The brotha which made the presentation for the drop out rate also made this documentary which tackles these very same topic... which I question if there is a new perspective which he didn't cover...

Good Lookin out Deacs on this. I know there is another thread about this, but I missed it but will definitely check it out. Funny thing is, now I live in PG county and I am older, I see how the numbers can be played with. Most of the families I know that have High School kidz, started out in Public but finished in Private school. Hell, my kidz goto private schools and I am in the process now of looking at other private schools in DC and VA..... Very interesting. When I was younger, I would have said that there are more Black men in Jail than in college at that time, but I know it's not true. I personally knew of several Black men in Jail, but only 2 in college. I was probably in Jr. High, but I can see if today's youth thinks that way, they would give that answer, although, I think it's a demographic response.

its a conditioned response.. and its not only your conditioning, but its also that of the ignorant ethnic groups and cacs around us as well... They can't make you believe their bullshit if only some of the people fall for it, it must be slept on, eaten with your meals, etc...
I went to public school in BK NYC.... it was horrible and filled with stereotypes... I escaped into the service, filled with patriotism and stereotypes, went to university, filled with stereotypes, then you look at television, overloaded with bullshit and stereotypes... it wasn't until I broke with the idiocy of my society and take a look at it that I finally understood the game which I played yet didn't understand the rules.

It's not really the school since most of them play by the same rules and ignorance called education... the only way to save your kids is to give them their primary education and then send them to school for the redundant shit...

Agreed on so many levels!!!

BTW, this is the shit that Boyce is involved in on the regular yet he gets so much hate on this board for going after Obama.

Unbelievable.

Anyone have a link to the first documentary..

Its so sad that, you have grown ass women and men believing that there are more black men in jail than graduating from college.....And then when you try to tell them its not true, they look at you funny...Its mostly the women who believe this nonsense...
