On Tuesday, UFC 153 fell apart as Jose Aldo pulled out of the main event fight with Frankie Edgar with an injury just hours after Quinton Jackson pulled out of his bout with Glover Teixeira. Wednesday, the October card in Rio de Janeiro was glued back together with the help of UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

As USA Today reported and Yahoo! Sports confirmed with UFC president Dana White, Silva will move up to light heavyweight to fight Stephan Bonnar in the three-round main event. Teixeira will now face fellow Brazilian Fabio Maldonado. Antonio Rodrigio Nogueira was filming a commercial with Silva when the UFC called about the Bonnar fight. He offered to fight and will now face Dave Herman.

The UFC was forced to scramble after injuries threatened another card. UFC 151 was recently canceled when Dan Henderson was injured light heavyweight champion Jon Jones turned down a bout with Chael Sonnen. Jones' refusal to fight caught White's ire so he was pleased to find his other champions would step up when needed.

"This is old-school UFC. A card is in jeopardy, but guys that are world champions and superstars stepped up and jumped in and saved the card. This is why the fans love this sport and why we went on a 12-year run without canceling an event."

Bonnar getting the call to fight Silva is a surprise as so many middleweights are clamoring to fight for the belt. His last fight was a decision over Kyle Kingsbury at UFC 139. Bonnar is best known for his bout with Forrest Griffin at the first finale of "The Ultimate Fighter." Their thrilling bout is credited for helping build the UFC into the company it is today.

Since that bout in 2005, his career has been up and down. At 14-7, he doesn't have the resume to earn a title shot, but his willingness to take a fight on short notice and the fact that Silva's belt is not on the line created the perfect storm for Bonnar to get the big fight.

Though he's dominated at middle weight for years, Silva has fought at light heavyweight before. In 2009, he knocked out former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin in the first round. He knocked out James Irvin in 1:01 in 2008.

Silva and Nogueira both fought on UFC 134, the first Brazilian card since 1998. They both won by knockout in front of a raucous crowd. It's not surprising to see them both want to take on fights in front of their home crowd again.

Does anyone think that Bonnar has a chance to win this fight? Same question for Belfort v Jones?

don't no one at light heavyweight want to fight Silva. Silva is gonna kill Stephan Bonnar first round KO, or Silva might play around with Bonnar until the second round just to make it interesting.

Bonnar is hard to KO. Ask Jones. Should be an easy win for Silva...and only Silva.

Dude has a lot of heart so he has my respect based off that alone (and he's a good fighter) but he's no match for Silva. But who is really though? I'd like to see Silva fuck up the LHW division before he retires but he might be too old for that now.

speed will be a factor... poor Bonnar will not see all the punches that will come at him

How is this even something to generate ticket sales. The UFC needs to be easy on all these subpar cards. I mean the haters will tune in to see if Silva can get beat but, damn they ain't getting my $50. for the bullshit.....

stephan bonnar is game and this a win/win situation for him, but fights like this have no business being made.

Bonnar is not a top 205 fighter and Anderson will proably demolish him. It just gives the UFC the biggest Brazilian fighter to mainevent the card in brazil.

Well ticket sales went up as soon as it was annouced. Bonner is at +866. I'm shocked its not higher. Bonner has only been stopped by cuts. So a fighter that has never been stopped will always be a tough challenge. With that said Silva takes this in 2. If Bonner comes in swinging he doesn't make it out of the 1st

:eek::yes:

Everybody keeps shittin' on Jon Jones, but this is what... the third, fourth card in a row that had to be saved with a last minute bogus as fuck replacement fight? Why is no one blaming Dana White for badly planning these cards and bait/switching fans with an inferior product? Silva's getting his 'company guy' on and I can dig that. But, this fight only makes sense in Brazil -- where they'd pay to see Silva fight a sack of potatoes... literally a sack of real potatoes (the vegetable).

This is bullshit. Who really wants to see this fight? If the UFC wants to keep getting my attention and the attention of others they better start having some good fights. I don't think people want to really see this fight. :smh:

Why don't they have Anderson Silva fight Rashad Evans? Now, that would be a interesting fight to see. Or, why don't they have Anderson fight Jon Jones? Or, have Silva fight Machida?

There are not too many people but those three might can beat Silva. Or, maybe a second fight with Dan Henderson?

If UFC keeps making these uninteresting fights, they are going to lose money. They better give the people what they want. Somebody is gonna have to lose no matter how great they are.
