Linux Heads: What distro are you running?

For the Ubuntu heads, did you have to download a theme to enable transparency effects? I remember it being a pain in the ass to enable on gnome desktops while KDE was much more user friendly.

What are you using? Gnome2, Cinnamon, Gnome Shell or Unity?

Cinammon/Gnome2
Change opacity tab on panel and terminal properties

====
Gnome Shell/Unity -
Easiest? Find a transparent theme on Gnome-Look or DeviantArt
Harder? Edit css file for your particular theme and search for background-color. Comment out and replace with "background-color: rgba(0,0,0,0.9);".

Example: By default, the Bottom Panel extension for gnome-shell isn't transparent. I had to edit the css file manually to make it transparent.

Ubuntu 12.04... I dont fuck with non-LTS releases, I run the others in VM just to see what changes are coming.

Theres some excitement for elementary OS, an Ubuntu based distro coming "when it's ready". They used to just be a theme/icon pack for 10.04. The guys behind it are stealing cues from OS X and trying to make it a simple, consistent and visually appealing OS for "regular people". The consistency part will be nice... they have UI/UX guidelines so all the in house apps they are building should be easier to navigate. It will still have the Ubuntu software center though so no need to worry about access to your preferred applications.

You can see some of it here:

You can download unstable pre-beta builds here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/elementaryos/files/unstable/

The stable build listed is from their last release that is based on Maverick, but its not updated and is basically just a themed version.

:eek: man fuck gentoo...:lol:

You must be sadistic...

Every time i tried to install it, i ended up yelling at my computer and needing a drink afterwards!! :lol::lol::lol:

it really isn't all that bad to install after screaming at it for 3 weeks straight.
10 hr failed packages. oh what fun.
i don't have it install on hardware though. I am running it through vmware.

i learned on gentoo...it still might be the best way to learn linux cause you have to fix everything...

one freaking package update and BAM!! 2 days of compiling :angry:

I have unbutu on my Asus netbook. Im gonna try that easypeasy on it. I have a few old desktops laying around i may try gentoo or suse on those.

:lol: just sayin...

:lol::lol::lol:

On my laptop, I'm running on a low end Core 2 Duo with 1020 packages in my world file and it'll take a little over 14 hours for a full system recompile.

That includes big packages like Chromium, LibreOffice, GNU C Library (glibc), GCC 4.6.2, QT, wxWindows, etc.

"emerge -eDp world | genlop -p"

If I use distcc with the computers spread around my house, I can slice it down by a large amount the last time I tried.

i still run 13

kats were really recommending unbutu in another thread, as well as this one

think i'll try that one next
I really like 17 but to tell the truth, 15 was the glory of Fedora!

I used Ubuntu but it felt like Windoze.

I bounce between Fedora and Opensuse, with Fedora getting 90% love.

I plan on compiling my own Linux kernel and creating a different distro in the near future.

I believe compiz is what you are looking for

Thanks. I just downloaded CompizConfig Settings Manager. I'll scan through there & see what I can find. Does that also control widgets as well or is that a separate app?
