I wanna start running a VM running Linux for basic & advanced knowledge with the hope of becoming advanced enough to be able to build my own shell from the ground up via command line & go for the Linux+ cert. I last ran Ubuntu at least 4 years ago & even then didn't get to play around in the OS enough to fully get used to the environment. What distros are you guys running? What would you recommend for novice to intermediate users to run?

Ubuntu 12.04. I started using ubuntu about two years ago. I think i tried Ubuntu Mint at first, but gave up on it. Then i gave it another shot and went straight to Ubuntu.
If you run into any troubles, just go to www.ubuntuforums.org. Great community and they help within minutes.

Why not got for a Red Hat cert vs. a Linux+? If you want to try Red Hat without paying for a license use Scientific Linux. Its a repackaged Red Hat source code minus the Red Hat logos.

Sabayon is the graphical version of Gentoo (Gentoo is very advanced, not for the faint of heart). I have been rocking Sabayon for several years now.I have a small partition for winblows for others when they need help. Go here to make your decision a little bit harder http://distrowatch.com/

I remember years back first getting introduced to Gentoo. I damn near had a brain aneurism trying to build that shell. I was no where near ready to tackle that beast. I'll fall back on that for now til I'm back up to speed on working with Linux fundamentals & command line use.

Latest version of Unbuntu in dual boot with Win 7 Ultimate X64.
Always keep a Knoppix disk around for emergencies though.

Trying mint on a new machine in a few...

Gentoo user from the beginning. It used to be called Enoch. I've been using Linux in some form or another since summer/fall of '95. I think the kernel back then was 1.2.X and my first install was with ZipSlack.

Just learning Cent OS so if your doing Red Hat its a good one to use (compiled from the same code)

CentOS and Red hat are basically the same thing except CentOS is free and doesn't offer paid support and Red hat does.

Their commands are identical though.

And while all Linux is similar Ubuntu has different command line shit and since my work is server side I never get to use the GUI's.

I will say that the important thing is to keep good reference sites saved.

OpenSuse, Mandrake and Ubuntu for me. OpenSuse and Ubuntu boot from thumb drives and Mandrake on an old PC.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) is the business standard, so i use it's free version Centos. I was going to choose Scientific Linux, but upon my research Centos had a bigger following. Also, we had Red Hat engineers come to they job as consultants and they said that the Red Hat Employees use Centos.

Linux+ is the Govt. minimum requirement for a contractor job, but the Red Hat Cert is "The One" in my eyes. Cost way more I believe.

rhcsa is 400$ and 2hrs for the exam.
michael jang's book was my bible for the exam.

Our group was using CentOS also until they started slacking in their security updates and their lead developer quit so then we switched to Scientific. That Red Hat cert does cost as it can be only done thru an official Red Hat training vendor but you're golden if its obtain as that test is hands on vs a paper test.

For the Ubuntu heads, did you have to download a theme to enable transparency effects? I remember it being a pain in the ass to enable on gnome desktops while KDE was much more user friendly.

Most of you brothers are way more advanced in GNU-Linux than I am. Matter of fact, why should I go to the forums for help when I got you guys? LOL

Kubuntu user from 06.04 to 08.10 and then Ubuntu from 09.04 to 12.04
