C’s appear to have best of both worlds

Faced with the choice between staying with an aging veteran core and rebuilding with much younger players, the Celtics [team stats] have decided to do a little bit of both.

By agreeing to work on a three-year deal with Kevin Garnett and, it was learned more conclusively yesterday, not let Ray Allen go without a fight, the club believes those two and Paul Pierce [stats] can be significant contributors to a contending team.

On the other hand, the Celtics also will try to get younger. The plan is to give the aforementioned trio even more rest during the regular season while developing the talents of players like JaJuan Johnson, E’Twaun Moore and rookies Jared Sullinger and Fab Melo.

Avery Bradley, 21, already has made his way into the starting lineup. He replaced Allen, but the Celts aren’t ready to part with the veteran shooter.

The Miami Heat have made Allen a free agent priority, but the Celtics are hoping the fact the champs can offer him just the mini-mid-level exception of $3 million and the lure of staying with Pierce and Garnett will sway him to stay.

The Celts still are hoping to sign Jeff Green and Brandon Bass, and they’ve made a qualifying offer to Greg Stiemsma, making him a restricted free agent and giving them the option to match any offer he gets.

If the C’s get Garnett, Allen, Bass, Green and Stiemsma back, they will be over the salary cap but almost certainly under the next threshold. That means they would be able to use the full $5 million mid-level exception to add another player, rather than the mini-mid-level available to teams like Miami with a higher payroll.

Clearly Danny Ainge and his band of basketball mathematicians have surveyed the free agent landscape for this summer and decided there is no great reward for cleaning house and getting far under the salary cap. They weren’t going to get Dwight Howard or Deron Williams, and as all the teams that wound up whiffing on LeBron James will tell you, the overall odds of landing a superstar in that manner are nearly prohibitive.

So the Celtics are going to try to keep their All-Star foundation — which, we shouldn’t forget, includes 26-year-old Rajon Rondo [stats] — and redo the walls and fixtures.

“It wasn’t a hard decision to make at all,” coach Doc Rivers. said “Economically it makes a lot of sense.”

It would be hard to picture Pierce, Garnett and Allen surviving even one more season while carrying a heavy minutes load, but the idea now is to even better preserve them for the long haul. That means opening up the rotation.

Though he’ll argue the point, Rivers has been reticent to simply hand out playing time to the youth, saying they have to prove they are worthy of the chance. His point makes sense, but there might be times when the coach has to give someone enough rope to prove he can’t play.

Speaking in general on the infusion of two first-round draft picks (Sullinger and Melo) and others, Rivers said, “We can integrate that. I have no problem with that.

“This summer’s huge for us. We want to remain good and we want to get young at the same time, and I think we can do it.”

And if any of the kids work out, the benefit to the Celts will be twofold. Beyond getting their contributions, the club will be building their value for potential trades. For example, Bradley is a far bigger chip in the NBA marketplace now than he was at the beginning of the 2011-12 season.

In any case, the Celtics will not be so loaded down with salary and long-term contracts that they will lose their flexibility entirely. Garnett will come in for far less than his previous contract, and it’s not likely the Celts will again go all the way to $10 million for Allen.

Houston wants to give Asik 8 million. Let him walk Pax, Asik is not worth 8 million a year:smh:. Taj needs to be resigned and Asik walking will make that possible. We need to look at a journeyman C to back up Noah. I still want to see the Bulls move either or both of Deng's and Boozer's contracts somehow.

I agree. Let Asik leave resign Taj and use some of the money that would have went to Asik for a SG since Forman's bitch ass couldn't acquire a 2nd round pick to select Will Barton, Doron Lamb or Quincy Miller. And then just find somebody to back up at C.

Well Khan makes Billy King look smart as fuck. The timberwolves offer batum 12 million a year. Lol

Why lock out players and then continue to give out horrible deals lol

:lol:Gotta love the NBA...

These GMs signing players to stupid contracts today....next year will be trying to get another team to take them:smh::smh:

Like the endless cycle...

The Portland Trail Blazers offered Indiana Pacers restricted free agent center Roy Hibbert a maximum contract after meeting with him in Washington, D.C., early Sunday, SI.com has learned.

A source with knowledge of the meeting said Indiana did not offer a max deal at the outset of the free-agent negotiating period and, unless that changes, Hibbert is leaning toward signing the Trail Blazers' four-year, $58 million offer sheet. The Pacers would then have three days to match the offer and retain the 25-year-old All-Star.

In addition, the source said one other team, which was not named, also offered Hibbert a max deal after the start of free agency on Sunday at 12:01 a.m. ET. Players cannot officially sign contracts until July 11.

[2012 NBA Free Agent Tracker]

New Blazers general manager Neil Olshey and team president Larry Miller were among those meeting at the office of Hibbert's agent, David Falk, the source said. Reports surfaced that the Blazers had also visited Chicago Bulls restricted free agent center Omer Asik, but the details of that pursuit and which Blazers officials may have been sent are unclear.

The attempt to sign Hibbert is a bold move for a Portland organization that is still reeling from the Greg Oden experience, those nightmarish five years in which the No. 1 pick of the 2007 draft played only 82 games because of seemingly endless knee injuries and surgeries. Recently named Pacers general manager Kevin Pritchard was the GM in Portland when the Blazers drafted the center from Ohio State.

The covert and aggressive push to land one of the game's best young big men is a clear sign that Olshey is in win-now mode. The Blazers are looking to rebound from a 28-38 season and the 7-foot-2 Hibbert is seen as a strong partner for power forward and fellow All-Star LaMarcus Aldridge in the frontcourt. Many had assumed that the Blazers would use the sixth pick in Thursday's draft to select a tantalizing wild card, 18-year-old UConn center Andre Drummond, but clearly they were seeking a big man like Hibbert who could help immediately. (Drummond went ninth to the Detroit Pistons, while Portland took Weber State point guard Damian Lillard at No. 6 and Illinois center Meyers Leonard at No. 11.)

Hibbert, the 17th pick in 2008, has improved his game and his body immensely in his short career. After discovering a previously undiagnosed asthma condition that had hampered him during his first two seasons, Hibbert lost 23 pounds and 6 percent body fat for the 2010-11 season. Once the medical situation was resolved and Hibbert dedicated himself to training that included mixed martial arts, he evolved into a productive starter and defensive difference maker. He averaged 12.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 29.8 minutes last season while being named to his first All-Star team.

[Zach Lowe: Hibbert the top young free-agent center]

If the Pacers don't match and Hibbert joins Portland, it could mean the end of small forward Nicolas Batum's time with the Blazers. The agent for the restricted free agent, Bouna Ndiaye, has had contentious negotiations with the team dating to last summer and the lead-up to this free agency period gave no indications that it would be different -- even with the addition of former Clippers GM Olshey in early June.

Despite Portland's clear stance that re-signing Batum is a major priority, a recent comment by Ndiaye couldn't have helped. After Olshey compared Aldridge and Batum to the Clippers' Blake Griffin and Chris Paul as far as being "bedrock" players for their respective franchises, Ndiaye told The Oregonian, "I like that. Give me Chris Paul money and we will not be fighting too long. Just close your eyes and choose between Chris Paul and Blake Griffin and I'll be fine with that. Give me one of those contracts and you'll have a deal."
