Certs..What have you obtained this year or in the process of obtaining?

I love seeing these threads :yes:

I just started school in the summer, and actually got a side job at the school in the Tech center. Been trying to pick the minds of everyone there while also learning what I can in class. Once I feel I have a grasp, then that will be the time for me to start knocking out those certs.

As a programmer, does anyone have any idea where to start first?

Depends on where you want to go with it. I'm currently taking a class on Java. Last summer I learned C++. Here is a good site to get you started.

I meant as far as which certs to go after first.

I'm currently enrolled in school but also have been trying to learn on my own as well. Just downloaded the study guides for Networking+, A+, and Security+.

If you were just talking about programming certs then yes there are certifications for knowing certain languages - Microsoft Certified Professional Developer, java certification (http://in.sun.com/training/certification/java/index.xml) and a many more.

I guess it all depends on what you want to do. What are you majoring in?

got the RHCSA last mth. working on the ICND 1. will be seriously searching for a job
in about 4 weeks.

Computer Programming AAS

My suggestion would be to get really good at programming in one language and work on getting proficient at other popular languages like Java, C#, etc. At the same time try going out and helping on projects or maybe getting an internship or a job on campus with a professor working on a software project(s). It will help you when looking for work to be able to say that you are a "Highly experienced <Language> coder, with 5 years of experience including projects such as X, Y, and Z.

fam, please at least check links before posting. ALL are DOA. :smh:

Yeah, no doubt. I actually work in the Tech Center/IT Support at my school, so I've been trying to pick their minds and work on as much projects as I can until the fall classes start.

I just downloaded a A+ study guide. I'll try and upload it for ya'll

Disagree

He has his MIS, he can start off at that level right now, he don't need no sinking N+, I need it since I only have a AS...

He can get into Helpdesk, Desktop and get experience right now, wait a couple years then tackle CCNA/CCNP and go for Network Administration.

You damn skippy. Never seen a job asking for a BA/BS and N+. CCNA all day.

What did you use to study for the BICSI?

I was able to take advantage of a free course that was offered through a program..books and everything free

check these people out if you located in NYC: http://www.bwiny.org/

also this program: http://www.perscholas.org/

they offer free training for the A+ and MCTS cert..I would've done it but I need some money in the bank right now..

Edit: damn ya dropping some heat right now..keep it up

getting my linux+ this year but i been bullshitting these past couple of weeks...props to the OP for this thread...i gotta get back on it

props 2Clips..

Question for the fam that have taken Comptia exams without any in-class teaching (vids, books, nuggets only)- Can you name the exam/cert and the source of your prep? Even if you dont have a download link. What I have found is that the study/prep materials vary DRASTICALLY. I have breezed through some practice exams and have bombed others. It would be good if everyone had an idea of what best reflected the actual exam. Thanks.

CompTia has practice exams on their website. Got a 65% going in blind. With some studying of the books dropped here I should be able to reach 75%+ (passing) in no time.

Can anyone vouch that the practice exams there are pretty much on target. I know that they often tone them up or down. Thanks for the info tho.

If you currently have a CISSP, what purpose is it for you to get a CEH?? I thought the CISSP was supposed to be the cream of the crop for security.
.
CISSP validates infosec management knowledge. CEH is more technical and focused on a specific area of security that interests me.

Got my CCNA in Feb....and now I wanna maybe look into getting the CCNA Voice and maybe CCNA security. Gonna take the network + just for the hell of it. I read through that book and its basically the same shit as the CCNA. By the end of 2013 I wanna have my CCNP.

got my A+ back in 2009, and then got my Network+, Project+, and JavaScript certs back in February of this year. working on Security+ and Windows 7 right now (will take both of those within a couple of weeks).

Has anybody taken anybody the CTP+ exam? I am thinking about pursuing the CTP+ cert also since I am trying to get into voice.
