With about 18 former U.S. military personnel killing themselves each day, the VA is considering new approaches to suicide prevention.

Black women have the lowest rates of suicide in the country, and although it’s not completely understood why, Veterans Affairs officials hope to re-create elements of black female culture that may help stop military veterans from killing themselves.

Women - particularly black women - provide each other social support and encouragement categorized by the opportunity to speak honestly with their peers, said Jan Kemp, mental health director for suicide prevention at the VA.

“The sense of community among themselves, and the ... built-in support that they get from each other is something we’re paying a lot of attention to, and trying to find ways to emulate,” Kemp said. “I think often that veterans and men don’t have that same sort of personal support, and we have to build that for them,” she said.

In general, white men are more likely to commit suicide than people in other groups. The suicide rate among white men was 25.96 per 100,000 from 2005 to 2009, according to the Centerns for Disease Control and Prevention. By comparison, the rate for black women was less than three suicides per 100,000. Government data for suicide deaths among military personnel is not available by race.

Combine that with the stress that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have put on troops, and the risk of suicide increases. “We’re working with the highest-risk group in the nation,” Kemp said.

Stories abound of vets dying at their own hands after slipping through the cracks in the care network or not seeking help because of the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

In April, Spc. Rico L. Rawls Jr., 22, reportedly shot himself after he led Georgia State Police on a high-speed car chase. At the time, Rawls was wanted in connection with the shooting death of his wife, Jessica T. Rawls, of South Bend, Ind.

“My son-in-law Rico came back from Iraq a different person. We asked, pleaded, and begged for help for him, but no one listened,” Rawls’s mother-in-law told an Indiana TV station in a written statement. “The pre-Iraq Rico Rawls would not have done this.”

In another case, Kim Ruocco’s husband, John, killed himself in February of 2005 while awaiting a redeployment to Iraq, according to MSNBC. “He was so ashamed of being depressed and not being able to do his job,” Ruocco told MSNBC. She believes her husband was going to seek treatment, but “when he sat there and thought about what it meant to get help, how people who see you, how young Marines viewed him, how his peers viewed him ... he thought the problem was him.”

Kim Ruocco, 49, is now the national director of suicide education and outreach for the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, a group that provides counseling resources for suicide survivors and facilitates support groups for family members. The organization works to provide the social support similar to that prevalent among women - particularly among black women - for the loved ones of veterans and active duty personnel who die by suicide or in combat.

“We really try to provide wraparound support,” said TAPS spokeswoman Ami Neiberger-Miller. Surviving family members are paired with peers who have experienced similar loss.

“We give people a place where they can talk and share openly - connect with others who have experienced a similar loss,” Neiberger-Miller said.

The task ahead of groups like TAPS and the VA is daunting. Suicides among active-duty troops are up in the first half of this year, the Associated Press reported Friday.

There were 154 suicides in the first 155 days of 2012, according to AP. That was about 50 percent more than the number of U.S. forces killed in action. Last year, 130 active-duty troops killed themselves over the same period, ending June 3.

Veterans are more likely than their civilian counterparts to die by suicide, according to a report published in the American Journal of Public Health earlier this year. About 18 veterans kill themselves every day, according to a Veterans Affairs spokesman.

Of veterans who committed suicide between 2003 and 2008, 92.3 percent were white, according to the American Journal of Public Health. White men made up 85 percent of the nation’s veterans in 2010, according to census numbers.

The VA launched its suicide-prevention program in earnest in 2007, Kemp said. Since then, the crisis line has received more than 600,000 calls and 50,000 contacts via computer chat.

Most contacts result in a referral for an appointment at a nearby VA facility or other services - sometimes just a ride, Kemp said. But more than 25,000 times, VA crisis line call-takers have called police because they believed a vet needed immediate intervention. Perhaps they were holding a gun, had taken pills, or told the call-taker that they could not be saved, Kemp said.

Among the most important VA efforts are those that offer support between peers, she said.

“People need someone to talk to - to bounce things off of, someone who perhaps has been there or knows about being there to provide that layer of hope and understanding that you can pull yourself out of this,” Kemp said. “We can help you pull yourself out of this bad place no matter how you get into that bad place.”

Veterans in crisis and their family members can call 800-273-8255 and press 1 to talk with a VA responder. Help is also available via text at 838255 or at VeteransCrisisline.net.

Families who have lost a service member to combat or suicide can also contact TAPS at 800-959-8277.

We had a black female that committed sucide in OKINAWA (2010), she was in the 505th ORD (SHE HUNG HER SELF IN THE SHOWER)

Black women live in an alternate reality to shield themselves from the shared reality of the rest of the world.

With all the negative bullshit the media likes to put out about black women, it is refreshing to read something positive about them.

black women usually have strong support groups family, friends, church..etc. That might be one of the reasons why the black female suicide rate is the lowest in the country.

I would argue that black women's faith would be the primary reason for low suicide rates. Something the white man would not emulate.

This... this is why faith is important in our lives. I understand theres hustler preachers pimping the poor. But religion is a strong support system, for individuals looking for a rock, in a turbulent unforgiving, stressful society we live in.

The Good (Black Girl) News This Week: We Support Each Other More Than Any Other Culture
June 15th, 2012 - By Brande Victorian

Most times when we find out that researchers are going to be studying some facet of black women we cringe. Especially since as of late those studies have revolved around two things—why are we all overweight and why are we all single. Yeah, we’re over it. But a new Veterans Affairs study is actually looking to examine something that black women are doing right in order to help other ethnic groups who aren’t faring so well. Amazing, right?

That being said, the good news this week is: We support one another more than any other culture!

How do we know this? Well, the government has been examining the fact that suicides among U.S. military members have spiked this year to an average of one suicide a day which is an 18 percent increase over last year and the highest rate so far during a decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Although the government doesn’t break down military suicides according to race, when you look at the general population, African American women have the lowest suicide rate of any group, while white men have the highest. Seems pretty odd for a double minority to be handling life better than the one’s born into the highest rank of society, right? The Department of Veterans Affairs thinks so too which is why they’re looking into how black women’s network of social support can be applied to military personnel and curb these deaths.

Jan Kemp, the Veterans Affairs mental health director for suicide prevention, told Government Executive magazine:

“The sense of community among [black women] and the … built-in support that they get from each other is something we’re paying a lot of attention to, and trying to find ways to emulate. I think often that veterans and men don’t have that same sort of personal support, and we have to build that for them.”

The Grio points out that recent studies like those from the Washington Post and the Kaiser Family Foundation have brought our supportive nature to the forefront, showing how we rely on one another and our own sense of self-worth to still feel beautiful and powerful and loved despite expanded waist bands, low net worth, and even social stereotypes and racism, and we encourage other black women to feel the same.

Sophia Nelson, author of Black Woman Redefined, told the Grio there are two main reasons why black women have a lower suicide rate and hold up so well against the odds:

“Black women are considered the most loyal faith-based group in the country,” she said. “It’s really black women’s coping mechanism. Black people go to church at the highest rate in this country, black women being the largest portion of that group.”

The other reason is steeped more in our history in America.

The strength of black women harkens back to slavery, but that strength is not just physical — it’s also spiritual. It has evolved,” she added. “We have been through slavery, Jim Crow, and suffered the social injuries of being both black and female. I would argue that black women, because of the horror we have endured — that puts you in a very unique situation. Their strength and their spirituality is what saved them — because of their history. It’s kind of like being a marathon runner. You build up your endurance over time.”

i didnt bother to read the article but am i the only person that seems to be missing an important detail
black women and other civilians arent shipped across the world to kill people they'll never know for reason they'll never completely understand

ya really cant compare the two

Man, this article sounds like a movie idea. Imagine the heart of a black woman transferred into a white man.

black women are the best at not killing themselves. hmmm...

kinda seems like a back-handed complement.

i mean, isn't that the least you could do in this life? not kill yourself?

This article is stupid...most of the suicides are from within combat units that are multiple deployments. They wore dem CACs down...

Comparing bw low suicide rates to soldiers is one thing. But lets not act like yt doesnt kill himself more than the avg regardless if he's a soldier or not.

Kudos to black women pretty interesting and makes me want to examine black women more closely now. Definitely something can be said about the black woman mental fortitude. However be mindful, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some type of duplicity behind mining this kind of information about black women.

They might be taking away from black women but who knows what they'll be putting back. Who knows who else the military will sell this information to. It just reeks of corporate snooping to learn new marketing schemes to sell shit to black women.

Dont women, generally have low suicide rates :dunno:

yes, theyre only higher in east asian countries, especially china. white men in the US have a very high suicide rate i think.

i didnt read the article but does the military deal with high suicide rates during peacetime.

I guess you can thank black men for this...We put black women through so much "bullcrap", that when they join the Military, they're pretty much ready for anything! But seriously I think the rate is low, because most of the jobs black females take are pretty low risk when it comes to experiencing traumatic episodes. I know of three who committed suicide. Two for issues dealing with sexual harassment by supervisors, and one because her kids were in a bad situation back in the States.
