NBA commissioner David Stern said Monday that he doesn't believe Derrick Rose's ACL tear, or the other major injuries plaguing the league this season, had anything to do with a schedule condensed by a lockout.
"I don't think it's related at all. Zero," Stern said on "The Herd With Colin Cowherd" on ESPN Radio.
The New York Knicks' Iman Shumpert also tore his ACL on Saturday, adding to a list of major injuries that included season-ending back surgery for the Orlando Magic's Dwight Howard.
Some players have speculated that a season that was reduced from 82 games to 66 with one day off between the regular season and playoffs played a role.
"When anything happens, that's going to happen," Stern said of people trying to find a cause-and-effect relationship. "But I was just reading something from a doctor who said that he just doesn't believe it. There's no evidence that the wear and tear ... and on Derrick it's kind of interesting, it was horrible to watch, but he was out. He missed 27 games earlier this year, so he only played in 40 of those games that we had in this quote condensed schedule. So what's your suggestion?"
Some have suggested it was the truncated training camp and fewer days to rest that contributed to injuries. Rose missed just five games in his first three seasons. He then suffered turf toe, back spasms, a pulled groin and a foot injury before tearing his ACL this season.
"When you think about it, that's the only thing that changed," Rose said about the schedule recently. "The way I work out is usually the same, even though I ran more than I usually did in the past. But I really don't know what to blame it on. Where they're just like freak accident, freak injuries, where it's just happening."
Knicks guard Baron Davis, who is battling a back injury in the playoffs, thinks the schedule is definitely hurting players.
"This has been a compressed season, a lot more games, a lot less practice time, a lot less recovery time," he said. "You can definitely look at the season and just look at the schedule and say that guys really never got the ample amount of time to rest and heal their bones because you're fighting for playoff position. It's game after game after game. So, you know, it's tough. But there's injuries, there's freak injuries in basketball that's always happening."
Despite the league saying that the injury rate is about the same as most seasons this year, Lakers coach Mike Brown agrees with Davis.
"I believe (the schedule has hurt), but it's nothing medical or anything like that," he said, according to Hoopsworld.com. "I have nowhere near the knowledge where I probably even shouldn't be making the statement. But yeah, I think so. A shortened season, a lot of games in a short amount of time, your body changes and stuff like that, you never know. I've just seen a lot of injuries this whole year, and I think it probably has to do with playing a lot of games in a short amount of time."
Dr. David Altchek disagrees. Altchek is from the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York and is a consultant for the NBA and has operated on players such as Josh Howard, David West and Purdue's Robbie Hummel.
"There is no evidence that wear and tear, or that kind of issue, playing too much, really has any correlation with ACL injuries in any sport that we've ever studied," Altchek said Sunday. "In fact, I think if you're tired (from a condensed schedule), you're a lot less likely to tear your ACL because you're not going to be as explosive."
Still, players such as Rip Hamilton predicted before the season that the NBA was going to be in store for an increase in injuries because of the schedule.
Stern said it's something the NBA will consider after the season.
"I think it's still worthy of our study at season's end to see how that just works out," Stern said. "We want to find out if we can learn something from this. But basically in most years we average about five ACLs, and prior to this year's playoffs we had three, from a schedule where we played two more games a month."
Information from the Associated Press and ESPNChicago.com's Michael Wilbon was used in this report.

DEAD.... MAN... WALKING!!!!

funny huh?
your room and your computer chair both smell like ass.
And guess why?
Good Day Sir!
This is my final LONGGGG rant/post about this season. Its over!
We actually played good today....and during the previous game as well...but we just didnt have what was needed to close out those games; Or maybe we did. But due to our team not doing what they did all season i.e. play unselfish/smart basketball....we ended up losing 3 games in a row. Thats why I hope our season is over this Tuesday. We just dont have enough healthy players to make a run at anything.
In all honesty I really havent been in a basketball or playoff basketball mood ever since Rose got injured. Not as depressed as I was on that day...but still really not interested because of it. Im still a die hard Bulls fan and supporter. I plan to be at Tuesdays game when/if we get eliminated.....but still ...Im really not interested. Im just going to show my support. Unlike the Bulls "wine and cheese" bandwagon crowd...ill be there to the end.
After all our bs....injuries......more injuries...more injuries.....coach getting desperate and putting players with one leg back on the court....a ball hogging PG that is only looking for his on shot.....the rest of our so called good players only stepping up when they feel like it...bad scouting....etc etc...I really just want this season to end. Not just because we cant win a title..but also for the sake of making the next round entertaining to watch.
So far this first round has been wack imho. Lot of one sided games. IMHO It'll be Boston vs Miami in the ECF. And the way its looking..... San Antonio wil come out the West. Im leaning toward Boston surprising everyone and coming out the East...but you never know; LBJ is looking good. Regardless I think the Spurs will get the title this year just like they did during our last shortened season. Regardless of who wins or loses...I really dont give a fuck. Thats why I havent been clowning NY for being shit. After Rose went down I really stopped giving a fuck mainly because I knew what was in our future.

Dont expect much next season unless the Bulls make some trades. But then again dont hold your breath waiting on a trade. We have mediocre players with big ass contracts. Plus most of those players are either getting old, injured or injury prone. Im sure some will make a trade with us despite all of those things that I just typed..but still....Next season is pretty much gonna be painful to watch if youre a Bulls fan.
Rose wil be out until Feb or March more than likely. They might as well keep him out the entire season. I would say that he would be back by Jan, but they say the Bulls Docs want to wait about 3 weeks before they fix his acl. Iman Shumperts injury was worst than Rose's...yet he had his surgery already.....but here we are waiting. Deng wil be out for the first 2-3 months. Then after that he has to get his rhythm back. Even if Rose comes back in January....I think it wil take him at least until the the Summer or Fall of 2013 before he's physically and psychologically on the right track. But he is a young/tough guy..so I hope Im wrong.
I dont want to go out on the limb and say we need to blow the whole team up in order to make another playoff push. because the truth is we dont know what this team couldve done if they were healthy. But I will say that after watching damn near every team in the playoffs..the Bulls need to seriously work on getting Rose some LEGITIMATE help. And I mean the type of help that can stil put up 20-25 ppg when Rose aint there. We need a post presence thats not 6'3" and under 200lbs. Our back court is lacking. We need a 6th man like Harden to come off our bench so Deng doesnt have to play 40+ mins. And the second and third string PG's that we have either refuse to or dont know how to run an offense. So we need legitimate back ups for Rose as well. After next year RIP wil be a FA...so soon or later we'll need another good 2 guard.
Bottom line...we need to get our shit together!
In closing......lol.......like JHood says on ESPN radio over and over again. We waited 5+ years for MJ and crew to get over the humps and bring us a title.....so now we're gonna have to have patience and wait for Rose as well. Im content with that because I know Rose will help bring a title to Chicago sooner than later..
BULLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
don't talk shit about shumpert fam
Real Rap, Yall need to get Scalabrine some touches...
who the fuck is this?
how do you go from the number 1 spot to being bumped out the first round by phillywhat a hoax
This nigga right here man...![]()
how do you go from the number 1 spot to being bumped out the first round by phillywhat a hoax
i thought that no call when Boozer went to the rack and then Philly got the trip to the foul line sealed the deal.
I didnt get to watch all the game...........but was there a reason why Rip was sitting out such a key junction late in the 4th?
The Russian better make a move or else Dwight Howard will be a Bull next season.
Great listen on Derrick Rose on what lead to his ACL tear. Basically the Dr said all of these injuries (especially the turf toe) affected Derricks kinetic chain (the whole knee bone connected to the toe bone).
http://espn.go.com/espnradio/chicago/play?id=7897184&s=chicago
Which leads me again to believe that our medical staff failed Derrick. Derrick has not been able to flex his big toe for 2 years and nothing was ever done to correct it.
Dr Jeff also goes on to say that he believes Rose can come back better then ever but only if the toe issue is addressed. Surprisingly he said he has little faith that the Chicago Bulls medical staff will.
Wow. This is exactly what I've been saying. The doctor said he's "100% in his belief" that the ACL tear wasn't a knee problem. He says it was all related (kinetic chain) to Rose's other injuries.
The doctor said (and apparently he has been saying on the radio since Rose's toe injury) that Rose wasn't treated properly from day one with his turf toe. And that he was basically rushed back from it. And that even watching Rose play, he could see that things weren't right. And the injuries are no surprise.
Everyone needs to really listen to this podcast. Probably the most important listen or read for a Bulls fan in the past year and for the foreseeable future.
Apart from the whole blame game (which I think is extremely important and isn't being done enough), the Doctor does address how to fix this problem going forward.
Apart from obviously doing surgery and rehab on the ACL (which the doctor thinks is likely to be done right), he says that just as important is basically fixing the root cause of everything: the toe. Whether it's surgery (likely) or what, he says that the toe must be fixed. He said that when the toe injury occurred and he heard Rose talk about how he hadn't bent his toe in years, a huge red flag went up in the doctor's head. Because his toe wasn't working properly, other problems were bound to come up.
But if the toe is fixed (along with the ACL), not only does the doctor think Rose will be back to 100%, but he thinks Rose will be better than ever! Because if Rose was playing with a messed up toe for years, he wasn't really at 100%.
That's an incredible silver lining to this whole nightmare. However, when the interviewer said that she thinks that it's pretty certain the doctors treating Rose will solve the toe issue, the doctor disagreed. He says that if these doctors couldn't figure out the toe problem throughout the season (after repeated injuries), he doesn't have faith that they will ever figure it out.
So the future of this franchise literally hinges on these doctors getting it right. If we hear that Rose will be having surgery on his toe as well as his ACL, I will probably the happiest I've been about the Bulls future since Rose went down.
