Paul Weyrich, one of the founders of ALEC and a leading figure in the conservative movement, explains the rationale for vote suppression. I find this interesting because... as with most conservative talking points... the reality diverges sharply from the rhetoric.

We're meant to believe that conservatives are genuinely concerned about the integrity of the voting process but all this hand-wringing about voter fraud (which incidentally is almost negligible as a real systemic problem in American politics) illustrates how disingenuous the GOP really is.

ALEC, fyi, is also behind all kinds of legislative fuckery including a concerted effort to disenfranchise voters who are already on the margins.

I'd love to hear thoughts from our resident conservative members.

:smh:
And yet, in the primaries where they can make their own rules, they didn't adopt any of these measures.

Not only is voter fraud rare, when it's proven, it's generally done by the people who are running the elections, not voters.

Exactly. A number of studies have shown that the incidence of voter fraud is statistically insignificant in the US. The thing that I find incredibly frustrating is that the architects of GOP policy (Like Paul Weyrich, the conservative thought-leader featured above) are quite candid and upfront about the fact that they are interested only in suppressing the vote. They are completely transparent about this... it's a strategic ploy.

But the talking points (which their infinitely gullible constituents eat up) emphasize their fears around the "integrity" of the vote. The hypocrisy is stunning.

They hide their stunning hypocrisy behind even more stunning Ad Hominem attacks and the equally impressive ability to move the goal posts in any given debate or discussion.

Damn.

Its hard enough getting people to open up with serious topics on this board as it competes with the "wilder" so-called mainboard, but when you guys keep debunking the talking points, you're not helping the situation -- all that seems to do is run them off or send them into hiding . . . :(

. . . and then you wonder why they won't respond :dunno:

:lol::lol:
Then they better have better talking points.
