Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson SCHOOLS James Cameron on Titanic and more

Astrophysicist extraordinaire Neil deGrasse Tyson - currently prepping a television revisitation Carl Sagan's COSMOS alongside Seth MacFarlane - has apparently taken James Cameron to school regarding an inaccuracy in Cameron's TITANIC movie. The picture was re-released in 3D today to commemorate April 15's 100th anniversary of the incident.

Per THIS piece in the Telegraph, Cameron reveals...
“Neil deGrasse Tyson sent me quite a snarky email saying that, at that time of year, in that position in the Atlantic in 1912, when Rose is lying on the piece of driftwood and staring up at the stars, that is not the star field she would have seen. And with my reputation as a perfectionist, I should have known that and I should have put the right star field in. So I said ‘All right, send me the right stars for that exact time and I’ll put it in the movie.’"

The change, it seems, is among the very few (perhaps the only?) physical alteration made to this new issuance of TITANIC beyond its 3D conversion.

For my money, Tyson is easily the closest person we have right now to the unequalable Sagan in terms of his ability to illustrate and communicate astronomical concepts both effectively and poignantly. I love the guy, so...as nerdy as this particular story admittedly is...the notion of Tyson snarking at Cameron puts a smile on my face.

Last I heard, Tyson's COSMOS - with which Sagan widow and collaborator Ann Druyan is also associated - is targeting a 2013 airdate. More as we know more.

sidebar: I used to watch COSMOS and I am very excited to see this and would recommend it strongly for families to watch together:D

This is where I don't agree with homeboy. I dig most of what he says, but at the core of the engine that runs the universe could still be a god, creator, or force. God in the "christian" sense may be bullshit, but maybe not depending how you look at it. Regardless I do that our spirits or consciousness can be explained scientifically. But I don't know if he truly can say there is no god.

He didn't. That quote is taken out of context.

The day that you stop looking — because you’re content God did it — I don’t need you in the lab. You’re useless on the frontier of understanding the nature of the world.

I don’t even care if someone wants to say “You don’t understand that; God did it.” That doesn’t even bother me. What would bother me is if you were so content in that answer that you no longer had curiosity to learn how it happened. The day that you stop looking — because you’re content God did it — I don’t need you in the lab. You’re useless on the frontier of understanding the nature of the world. I’m glad, whoever those folks are, that there aren’t that many of ‘em. Because if they dominated the world, we’d still be in the cave. We would have never left the cave. Because “there are mysterious things out there, and God is doing that, and you don’t need to know that, and don’t even think about it.” Where would we be, if their understanding of the world ruled the world?

He didn't. That quote is taken out of context.

the entire interview...:D

Considering as perfectionistic and tyrannical as he's rumored to be,
You've got to give Cameron props for being MAN enough to take Tyson's "advice" and right a "wrong" in his film.

And when the FUCK is PBS going to give Tyson a weekly show already?
Just because Right-Wing conservatives are "Anti-Science" doesn't mean they need to whimper down. This nation needs a Science-Fuck now more than ever. Especially since other countries have jumped ahead within the last two decades.

word:yes:

Yeah man, I'm an old fuck. As a kid I always had my mom read me astronomy books, and I wanted to be an astronomer. Carl came on the radio and was taking callers so I had to call in.

I remember asking him if he thought that traveling trough a black hole could take you into another dimension. (Sue me, I was like 8-9)

One of my personal inspirations.

I guess you missed the part about COSMOS coming back on?
