europe used to have tribes, just like arab and african societies today, migrating hither and thither, fighting over territories and regularly going to war with one another.

there were german tribes …… gallic tribes …… iberian tribes …… british tribes …… irish tribes …… etc., etc.but by the high middle ages, most of these were gone. what happened?

i got five words for ya: the holy roman catholic church (and, later, many protestant churches).

the church BANNED cousin marriage — and fiddled with a lot of other mating regulations like divorce and such. no more polygamy, either!

Funny you bring this up. Majority of western Europe are of germanic tribe decent today. Celts, Anglos, Saxons, and Jutes are the major tribes that have spread through out western Europe. In the east you have the Slavs, Cosaks, and others.

I found out that the reason why our language (english) is very influenced by German is because when Rome conquered the isles of britania towards the end of the empire, the original inhabitants of Britania hired Anglo, Saxon, and Jute warriors to eradicate the Romans from their lands, which they did. When the Romans left the isles due to pressing matters in Rome (other germanic tribes invading from the north), The Anglos and Saxons stayed in England, and pretty much took that bitch over. This is why today English is heavily influenced by not only Latin but early Germanic/Celt language as well.

So most peeps in England can trace their dna to that of Germany or its surrounding areas.
