Just heard that Matt Stafford doesn't watch TV and reads a lot.

And they slobbing him up big time for this...

And whenever we go to any parents stuff there is always some parents BRAGGING that their kids dont watch TV implying that their child is somehow SMARTER then other children because of this.

I met a parent who bragged insistently about not letting his daughters watch TV but they were online all day and had smart phones...

So I wanted to ask BGOL...

as parents do you limit or totally restrict TV/and or online use for your kids

and for YOURSELF do watch less TV or have cut it off totally...

Do you READ more NOW then you did BEFORE???

Just Asking...

before my son was born, i swore i wouldnt let him watch tv. now that he's almost two, i realize that it was easier said than done. i do believe that tv is a complete waste of time. all that flashing and lights and sound coupled with subliminal messages, not to mention the nudity and the violence all make up for a recipe that in my opinion does nothing to further human intelligence. TV has also been shown to give you ADHD. you think it's a coincidence that we have more kids with ADHD now than in previous generations?
also, dont even get me started on how it causes obesity
if i had my way, i'd only let my son watch TV like once a week...even i myself have thought of limiting the amount of time i watch TV to like maybe once a week......but it's hard....and whenever it's hard to quit something, that should tell you right there, it's an addiction. addictions are never good

I have no problem if people choose not to watch tv. My only problem is when folks act like they're out smashing atoms since they've turned their tv off. Shit, these cats be here on BGOL talking that no tv shit. But they'll spend 4 hours a day in ock and pussy threads. :smh:

much respect.

Been there I was able to hold out until 2 1/2 for my girl...

she only watches educational shows and has a set number of time...

but sometimes she goes over and some days she herself says "I dont want TV today, daddy."

So I think it depends.

She does cry sometimes for a one fav show but if I take her bike riding, to the park, library, museum (her favorite) she forgets it immediately.

I think in your case its more of a HABIT vs. addiction...

If it wasnt availble you wouldnt sneak into your neighbor's house to watch Justified:D

but I think in ADULTS the same can be said with e-mail, internet surfing, porn, etc.

Over the last 10 years I've watched fewer and fewer Television. In my house the TV is almost always off. Yes, I do read more and write more too. Besides most of my entertainment comes via the internet or movie house or other activities. Been saying TV is wack for a few years now and like some one mentioned it has no redeeming value.

Sure when I watched TV there were a few programs I liked and still do but now you don't have to watch TV anymore to stay in the loop about what's going on, computers and smartphones have changed that paradigm. Now when money gets tight cable TV is the first to go. I can say when you don't have TV in the house it will make you find something else more constructive to do.

As for making you smarter I don't know but there could be some benefits to not watching like not being influenced by the myriad of bullshit that is pumped on every channel.

TV is brainwashing tool and is especially for the youth. I'm working on weening my kids off the "idiot box".

Maxi you hit the nail on the head...

this was my MAIN point!!!

The kids (or parents) are learning a new instruments, learning a new word, reading a classic novel, going to an art show, exercising, etc.

But they imply that the mere FACT that YOU are watching TV makes you stupid but mysteriously they always know abou t the Wire, Homeland, Sopranos, Sex and the City, Mad Men, Breaking Bad

But that ISN'T REAL TV:rolleyes:

the fact that she uttered those words mean you've done your job and excellent second point

we are talking about the kids here. as an adult, i know i can't stop watching tv now. it's too ingrained in my system. however, knowing that the benefits of not watching TV outweigh those of watching them, i will do everything possible in my power to make sure that my son doesn't become like me. ya dig?

there is compelling tv if you want to find it. same as in any medium whether it be literature, music, the arts.

People spouting the sentiment in the OP's post are more interested in being seen as different than in any tangible benefit to not watching television.

what I disagree with is the notion that substituting TV for the internet is some type of upgrade...

one could argue that it is actually less structured and secure then TV...

exposing you to even MORE damaging images and misinformation.

:bravo:

I am a slave to sports shows myself and turning on the TV is a regular habit...

i've tested myself on occasion to see how long I could go without...

I was doing well until basic cable stared getting so good:lol:

I agree with u completely.

I admire parents like u, your goal is to make your kids life better then yours and to be better then you...

you would be surprised how rare that is fam!:D

Like anything you should be discriminating about tv watching.
Many come home and just switch on the tv and watch what ever.
If you plan your tv wating, by determining what you want to watch and then swith it off you'll find time to do other things like reading etc

Read this book fam

I don't own cable but I've been sucked into watching these premium shows online. I'd like to reduce even the modest amount of tv I'm watching. Reading and "creating" stuff would be a much better use for the time invested.

as a parent, isn't that the ultimate goal?:lol: i think even the most fucked up parents wish their kids are better than them.

Bubba in kentucky somewhere while making crystal meth would want his son not only to make crystal meth when he grows up but also add oxycontin to the family business
If a hood rat from north philly can twerk her ass on youtube at 200 twerks per minute, she would want her lil daughter to be able to twerk at 400 twerks per minute when she grows up.

Obviously dummies think tv is all jersey shore type shit. I watch through the worm hole, all those space shows, fascinating shit. I also watch politically incorect. Tv is more than crap.

you'd be surprised how many parents dont have that philosophy...

"it was good enough for me" theory

I'm not talking PRECIOUS but you know...

I don't believe not watching it makes you smarter, but I do believe watching it in excess makes you dumber.

Yeah its wild hoe some cats swear they shut the tv off and as a result are now getting a phd in phase 3 rocket science

Because they usually can manage their time well, thus can get stuff done that everyone else just seems to talk about doing. Like reading, or hobbies, or going to social events. Not saying that people who watch TV don't do these things, but people who don't seem to do more.
