Damn, times have changed we were teens

What are your thoughts on brands such as Rocawear losing stock?

I don't think anything has changed. You look at FUBU, you look at Rocawear and let's put them together. When FUBU started to slow down in the United States, the same amount of years you'll see that Rocawear came out after FUBU, Rocawear would slow down. Fashion has a life cycle. And it's not an urban thing, because you and I, when we were young, what were our urban brands? Levis, Adidas, Lacoste, Guess, Carhartt, and so on. So it's not a slowdown on urban brands, because black, hip, whatever the case is, they're all wearing a certain brand. It's just that now technology has taken over our world. So when you and I were kids and we would get $300, we're going to buy some kicks, we're going to the mall to check out some chicks, and we're going to buy the hottest brand. But with the kids now, when they get $300, they're downloading a bunch of mobile apps, they're getting their Netflix, they're saving up for the $700 iPad, and they're not going to the mall because they're finding girls on YouTube and Facebook. They don't need clothes anymore. And people are just not spending as much on clothes because they have to pay their mortgage and keep their phone on. It's just that the whole [clothing] business is deteriorating at this time.

Bullshit. Kids are just buying cheaper clothes actually. I feel like our generation bought a TON of overpriced shit. Now, they're buying cheaper clothes and are trying to create outfits.

I see tons of kids in the mall also.

But what's the cause? Our generation (80s) was big on dressing in expensive gear. I went to a school where suede, fur and leather was the thing to wear.

Aren't the kicks pricier than before? I don't wear sneaks.

When I go to the mall to cop something, I see the kids in cheaper sneakers. You don't see it how it was when we grew up - where everyone had expensive jordans.

People still cop them, but I feel like teens really wear cheaper shit.

For real!!! My pops would kick me $20, and tell me make it last and kick rocks if it doesn't!!!
:lol::lol:

You and I both... With my shitty 'allowance' I was working in a grocery store at 14, getting 50 cent tips from ladies after carrying all their groceries to the car...

Man the first/only time I had a pair of actual Jordans I was in my mid 20s and bought... I wore the blacktops and my dad wore the Jordans... When boys clowned me that my dad had better bball shoes than me, I told them what he told me "When you can afford them, you can have a pair" ... But when I realized I had to work a whole week to buy a pair, I was like "FUCK MJ! Gimmie the Pro Wings over there"...
:smh: :lol:

But the kids don't buy anything, it's more a place to hang out. This is why some larger malls basically kick you out Friday and Saturday evenings unless you are with someone over 18, they just see you as loitering.

And of course people are going to buy cheaper when they have more things they can spend it on. in the 90s you were lucky to have a cellphone, and that's pretty mandatory now, let alone things that will take your money a few dollars at a time.

I see it like this: in our time, we watched rappers with fly, matching gear. And we wanted to look like them, but you had to throw down on layaway because not everyone was trying to deal drugs. You hear about that shit on 90s rap records.

The first time I ever saw a rapper dress down and stay neat was Heavy D. then he switched up by the next record.

Now, they're nothing to follow designer wise. Everyone's being lazy with it.

yeah this article is bullshit. kids are gonna jump fresh at any given opportunity. shit is just cheaper these days than it was before. and i would say marketing as an "urban brand" these days ist the appeal. todays fashion is marketed towards a more broader audience. like u see alot of black kids these days in american eagle, aeroepostle, and alot of skateboard and underground clothing brands. that "urban fashion" marketing shit going the way of the dinosaur

imo kids are now buying/receiving more expensive items due to the media exposure we didnt have while growing up. entertainers were not "portraying" overly lavish lifestyles as they are now. kids these days are spoiled

Yeah, Ipods, Ipads, Iphones, $70 video games... Beats my dre headphones... Kids can't afford that shit...

Sad thing is that people aren't making much more than they were making when I was a kid...

...Don't know how you parents do it...

Really. where at? I kinda thought it was white boy fashion but now I'll copy anything cheap. I fuck with Salvation Army except for club attire. I'm all about the technology items.

Yep! Although you have to admit, FICA made cats cry in the beginning! :lol::lol::lol:

I remember when I tried to remember how to fill out that tax form so tax I can more green on the check. Check 0 or 1 to claim tax dependents.

but all those brands are still around doing their thing so what is he saying?

it IS an urban thing. you cant turn a trendy brand into a lifestyle brand just selling to the finicky hiphop crowd.

diddy learned from everybodies mistakes. shit i went to macys the other day and they had a seanjohn bedding section. nice ass comforters, pillows and all that right next to ralph lauren and martha stewarts stuff.

I got an allowance until I was old enough to get a work permit and then they made me get a job. Perk was when I turned 16 they bought me a car so I didnt mind working.

......I never got an allowance. My parent would just buy me stuff if I asked and if I did good in school, did chores around the house.

actually this should have been the way but shit was hella expensive. Kids should be wearing uniforms the way we were stuck up for fly gear. :smh:

If I could turn back the clock, I would have saved for bum ride. That was better than having the flyest gear.

but I envy these kids for the gadgets out. They have more "time" to play developer, create and edit homemade movies, create music on iphones and tablets...shit's ridiculous!

bullshit
go in the sneakerheads thread and look what the kids (some on this board) are paying for sneakers alone

Fuck that! I have never given my son an allowance! He don't deserve that shit! He don't do shit to deserve one. My mom gave me an allowance but I was grateful and did shit around the house and I was a good kid who played music and sports! Got a job at 14 and started buying my own shit! Kids today are some lazy ass muthfuckas and expect you to hand them money just for asking! GTFOHWTB! As for the sneakers thing......$200-$300 for a pair of sneakers??!?! Mufuckas would rather have Jordans than to save for a car, education or a house? da fuck outta here!

What do you guys mean by work permit?

Are ya'll saying that wherever ya'll grew up(I'm guessing NY,eastcoast) that a teenager had to get a permit to work? Is that for anyone under the age of 16?

$300 for allowance? Shiiiiit I wish. I was getting $5 a week for awhile and then it got bumped to $10.

When I was a kid, in NYS, you needed a workers permit for summer youth and shit, if you were under 17/18 I believe. I think it was for kids 14-17 years old....i dunno, that was a long time ago.

Shit $300 allowance wtf? The most i got was 20. I still have my summer youth card from '92 :lol: i think pay was every 3 weeks and you had to wait on a long line in front of a public school to get your check. By monday, you were broke :smh:

I guess i was lucky growing up because shit I used to walk around with $300 and usually more in my pockets just because I wanted too.I didn't really value a dollar until I started working for it.

Urban brands need more than just urban people for it to thrive, this new generation of kids taste are much more expensive because their exposed to alot of things, via, television, internet. When I was in young you wore what was in at that time, you purchased what was hot, being in nys that was every couple of months(weeks)brands were coming out.

:dance:Walking into goldsteins...whats the new ya'll got?when is the new shit coming in?no matter what it was,you had to be the first to have it.The malls were there but it was the little holes in the wall spots catered to us....but thats even no more.

there were no allowances in the hood :smh:

:yes::yes::yes:

no shit. but when report cards came out, my parents would give me $5 for every "A," and $3 for every "B."

"C's" were not allowed.

i didn't know what name brand clothes were until i was damn near 18. some of you cats had it good.

i just go to the websites. aeropostle has some pretty cheap stuff. i havnt looked into holister. growing up it seemed that shit was always too expensive but its really not. my lil bro rocs aero and holister exclusively.

when i see kids walking home from school these days thats the type of stuff i see. stuff like creative rec, crooks and castles, dgk, all the stuff i named above, etc...

hell the only "urban" clothing line i can think of that rings any sort of bell these days is jeezys 8732

Shiiiieeet!, I remember when the original Jordan 3's came out and I wanted them......mom dukes said......."get a job or rob someone! I don't have that kind of money for sneakers!!!"........and if yall remember they only cost $60 at the time:smh:

For real!!! My pops would kick me $20, and tell me make it last and kick rocks if it doesn't!!!
:lol::lol:

I only got 5 IF I got an allowance. Hell I as still getting 5 before I left high school.

I think it might be different for the girls though. Cause a chick always gotta stay looking good but stores like Charlotte Rouse and Forever 21 make it easy to buy a lot of clothes and what today passes for cheap. I know back in the day though I was sad cause I wanted to be normal...everyone had on Air Max and Air Force 1's with Nautica and Polo shirts and all I had was whatever was on sale at KMart. And it wasn't the cute stuff either cause moms tried to be my fashion director so I ended up looking like a 50 year old. Only had two pairs of pants for the whole school year :yes::(

Damn shame too cause I spent my allowance on gifts for my parents. Wasn't allowed to go anywhere to get the chance to spend on something I wanted or needed...like pants.
