Is Anthony Mackie The Next Denzel?

Anthony Mackie stars in Man on a Ledge, a thriller opening today to lackluster reviews. In the movie, Sam Worthington stars as a prison escapee willing to gamble his life in a daredevil attempt to distract from a plot to nab the jewel that will prove his innocence by... you guessed it: standing on a ledge. It is just this type of predictability that has led CBS News to call the film "a limp high-wire act."

Man on a Ledge might not set millions of hearts racing as was likely intended, but it is still an exciting career move for an acting veteran who has steadily worked since his motion picture debut in 8 Mile (2002). Mackie has remained on the short list of black actors getting prominent billing since playing the villain in Eminem's fictionalized biopic -- appearing frequently in high profile films such as 2004's The Manchurian Candidate -- but has yet to make it to leading man status.

With well over a dozen big-budget pictures under his belt, he seems more than ready to take over the mantle of Denzel Washington or Will Smith -- or at least join their ranks. Will he ever make the cut?

"I think Anthony Mackie could be the next Denzel Washington if given the right material that will showcase him in a different light," Wilson Morales, owner and editor of BlackFilm.com told theGrio.

"Denzel played great supporting parts before Spike Lee started giving him lead roles. It took a few years before Jamie Foxx was given the right material," Morales noted. "After doing a number of comedies, Foxx turned heads in Any Given Sunday before he played the lead role in Ray, which led to an Oscar for best actor."

With his many meaty (if minor) roles, it should only be a matter of time before Mackie lands that arresting part that will catapult him upward. But given Hollywood's money game, Mackie's well-wrought path might not be enough to launch him into Denzel's stratosphere, even if he deserves it.

"There's a lot of pressure when one is a leading actor," Morales explained. "In Hollywood, not in independent film, one is expected to bring in an audience that will translate into box office hits.

"While Anthony brings credibility to films, producers haven't made up their minds about whether he can make money in his own film as a lead," the African-American film industry expert concluded.

But Mackie is still on a great trajectory to be considered a strong box office draw. "He's been in two films that have won best picture, Million Dollar Baby and The Hurt Locker," Morales said. "He's worked with big name directors -- such as Spike Lee and Clint Eastwood -- and still has had time to work with newcomers, like Tanya Hamilton, director of the 2010 indy flick Night Catches Us. He's also not afraid to take on smaller roles, if he can make a mark in the film as he did in Notorious and Real Steel."

So, we can't knock Mackie's hustle -- or his bravery in calling out Black Hollywood for the lack of initiative displayed by its leaders. In an interview with theGrio last year, Mackie said: "I think right now [blacks] are being kinda lazy on our game.

"There are enough brothers with distribution deals and production deals where we should be making our own movies," he asserted.

Mackie is the kind of talent, with the proven track record, that Hollywood producers -- of every color -- should be willing to bet on. The question remains whether those with the power to greenlight blockbusters will put their dollars and sense behind his leading man potential.

Denzel played great supporting parts before Spike Lee started giving him lead roles.

 What was the person who said this smoking? Denzel had leading roles before Spike.

If Jamie could chose better parts they'd say the same things about him. He's more talented than Mackie.

I was beginning to like Anthony Mackie as a actor, so one day I rented this movie with him playing a poet. I was thinking ....cool, should be a good movie. So I'm watching his flick and he has a homie in the flick, Anthony takes his homie back to his room in the movie, they kickin' it, just talking. I'm watching, then the other dude sits next to Anthony, I'm like "give homie his space." And then, the dude bends into Anthony, and they start tongue kissing.....:puke::smh::smh:...I had to click the movie off.....

....I know it was just a movie, but I never looked at him the same way...

Fuck no...dumbest prediction ever. Exactly what role has he played to make any one think he's going to be the next DZ

No one wants the next Denzel curse. Everyone that got it is gone from the scene.

Larenz Tate, Blair Underwood, Derek Luke. The list goes on.

yeah Denzel is like the Michael Jordan of Black Actors, he is the blueprint.....he can't be cloned, he was laying the tracks so others could follow....we shouldn't even look for the next one, and yup it is a curse that no one should have the burden of....

Anthony Mackie is a good actor, but Jamie Hector is far better IMO. Mackie is definitely being groomed to be the next Denzel.

Nah son :smh: I seen Jamie in a lot of other shit. There's a reason why they had the Marlo character talk so slow. That nigga cant act out that character.

Maybe you meant Micheal K Williams.

There is so much that goes into what Denzel did. He never completely sold out. Never did drag for a laugh (that I know of) and didn't play any (or many) straight thugs. He also didn't play "The nigga they couldn't kill" as he said in a youtube video.

YOu have to plan your career. And even when you are desperate for work, have the sense to say no to a role that will set you back, either in the minds of others or in your own mind. We all have jobs that we look back on now and say, "WTF was I thinking working there?", but as an actor, those roles can be the beginning of the end of your career.

World B Free is right, Denzel is the Blueprint, but Will Smith is another great blueprint to follow as well. Will blew his first few millions, but was much smarter when it came to the millions after that. After that, he invested in his career being executive producer on his films so that he got 2 checks instead of one. When you do that, you make movies that you want to make and not waiting for Hollywood. Aside from Wild Wild West, when was the last Will Smith flop (some say Ali, but he was nominated for an Oscar in that role and I thought it was a decent, but not great movie. Will and Denzel, or should I say Denzel and Will are great blueprints to follow if you are a Black actor.

Anthony is a good actor but doesn't have the leading role presence/look that Poitier or Denzel has

Why do people still say Wild Wild West was a flop? The film did like $300 million at the box office. Crirics dogged the film because a black man had the nerve to play the role of an Iconic white man. Plain and simple.

Don't forget the white guy was kind of the the side-kick. A definite no-no.

I've never once heard any of these actors compared to Denzel.

My son Ejiofor is about the same age as Mackie, I'd say he compares mare favorably to Denzel.

I met Mackie a few years back at Tom's Restaurant when I was living in NYC. He grew up in New Orleans, went to the school for the "gifted in the arts," and definitely hasn't forgotten his roots. Many people will remember, if they've seen the Spike Lee documentaries, that his brother still lives and works down in New Orleans. He's very down-to-earth, but hasn't forgotten where he comes from...AND is a pretty talented actor. As someone else mentioned, if he's provided the right material, he definitely could make his way to gaining more mass appeal...instead of this pretty white boys running things right about now (i.e., Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, etc.)

I'm glad to see the New Orleans brotha gettin' some shine. I think he can go far, and I hope he does. But, after that tragedy he did playin' Pac in the Biggie movie, he gon have to do a whole lot more good acting jobs before they can even mention him in the same breath with Denzel and Sidney. 100

:lol::lol:

Mackie is the next in line of the young bloods. Chiwetel and Idris are older (by Hollywood standards), and they are British.
