As BoxingScene.com had reported a few days ago, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (39-0-1, 29KOs) began training for a planned ring return on May 5th. Also returning on May 5th, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, is Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26KOs). Canelo has not disclosed if he's fighting Mayweather, or if the two boxers are going to co-headine another HBO pay-per-view - as they did last September.

But, Canelo does not hide his feelings. He wants to fight Mayweather on May 5th. The Mexican superstar, also the WBC champion at 154-pounds, is willing to face Mayweather at a catch-weight of 150-pounds. Mayweather is the WBC's champion at 147.

"Right now my mind is focused on a possible fight with Mayweather. It would be a dream fulfilled," Canelo said.

Mayweather is trying to secure Manny Pacquiao for the May date, but the two sides appear to be far apart on several key points - including the date. Canelo, however, is ready to go.

Dude is green in terms of the quality of his comp, but he has a lot of fights under his belt and is heavy handed so it isn't the worst plan B.

I would have preferred Martinez but I guess with the time restraints and Martinez might not have been able to break off that fight in March so it's looking like this kid has the opportunity to show the world what he is really made of.

Alvarez being with GB and Martinez not being available makes Saul the front runner unless Arum and Manny stop bullshitting.
I still think he needs seasoning and there are plenty of good fights at 154 for him but it's the business.

Not much different than Ortiz: he's the underdog so if he wins, it's a HUGE upset but if he loses, he was expected to and can still go make those other quality jr middleweight fights.

Only difference is I think he might hit a little harder than Ortiz, which can be a game changer at any point during the fight. With that said if Gomez could get off on dude and make it hard for him to land good shots... I can only imagine Floyd will play around with him.

Exactly.
He might hit harder than Ortiz but Ortiz had gamechanger power, he just didn't get a chance to use it.
But at least, if this is the fight that happens, it'll be another name to throw at people that say "He just fights smaller guys".

 It doesn't matter, he has the most picked apart record, I have ever seen. All he has been fighting for years now is champions and you hear some cats tell it... Floyd is fighting cab drivers, which is fine if you are going to go hard on everyone, but these cats don't do that.

I know. It's a shame really.
