Guns N' Roses, Heart, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts and The Cure are among the first-timers on short list of nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's class of 2011, joining returning hopefuls the Beastie Boys, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Donna Summer and others.

Fifteen finalists are on the ballot that's been sent to the Rock Hall's more than 500 voters, who will in turn select five to be inducted into the shrine on April 14, when the 27th annual ceremony returns to Cleveland for the third time.

Other first-time nominees on this year's ballot include the Small Faces/Faces, the Spinners, Rufus with Chaka Khan, Freddie King and rappers Eric B. & Rakim. Donovan, Laura Nyro and War are making return visits to the ballot.

Acts are eligible at least 25 years after their first commercial recording release, meaning 1986 or before for this year's group. This is the first year for Guns 'N Roses and Eric B. & Rakim's eligibility.

The complete list:

Reality check - Eric B and Rakim will not get in before LL Cool J, so they definitely won't get in if the Beastie Boys are on the same balllot. The Spinners and Freddie King should be happy to finally get a nomination after 25 tries each. There is not room the same year for both Chaka and Donna, and it's finally Donna's turn.

My predictions (not necessarily who I would pick):

Guns N Roses
Heart or RHCP (but NOT both)
Donna Summer
Beastie Boys
old school wild card - either Donovan ('90) or Laura Nyro ('92) or War ('96)

I don't see Donna getting in this year. They don't want to let in Kiss, they gonna keep the Queen of Disco waiting awhile too.

There are only 619 RRHOF voters, and too many of them have personal beef with Gene Simmons to get Kiss elected (or even nominated) anytime soon. They usually diversify the selections and there are no other absolute standout ethnic nominees, so this year is Donna's best chance yet of getting in.

Given his teen idol status, Donovan will get this one.

I'm not as familiar with the voting trends of the R&R HOF as I am with, say the NFL, but your logic sounds pretty solid.

Donna Summer is the only one I'm confident in saying is gonna get in, but I will say that I doubt the maximum allowed gets in.

NEW YORK — Welcome to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Guns N' Roses.

The seminal rock band of the late 1980s and early `90s, best known for hits like "Welcome to the Jungle," "Sweet Child O' Mine" and "November Rain," leads the 2012 class of inductees announced on Wednesday. Also making the cut is the hip-hop trio Beastie Boys; rockers the Red Hot Chili Peppers; the late singer/songwriter Laura Nyro; Donovan; and influential British rock group The Small Faces/The Faces, which included Rod Stewart and Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood.

Nyro, who wrote such hits the 5th Dimension's "Wedding Bell Blues" and Blood Sweat & Tears' "When I Die," is the only female act to make it this time around. The hall passed on Donna Summer, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Heart and Rufus with Chaka Khan, who were on the ballot for 2012.

But it wasn't just women who were denied entry into the rock hall for next year. Voters also passed on hip-hop pioneers Eric B. & Rakim, War, the Cure and the Spinners.

Guns N' Roses blazed on the rock scene in 1987 with their official debut, "Appetite for Destruction." Fronted by siren-voiced singer Axl Rose, with Slash and Izzy Stradlin on guitars, Duff McKagan on bass and Steven Adler on drums, the group dominated music with its aggressive rock grooves. Early in their career they were criticized for lyrics in the song "One in a Million" deemed as homophobic, misogynistic and racist. They were also defined by their dysfunction, gleefully embodying the mantra of sex, drugs and rock and roll.

The band sold millions and millions of albums, providing a sharp contrast to a pop world defined by the likes of Madonna and Michael Jackson. But the group's turmoil, often on display before the whole world, would cause the core to fall apart by 1996. Their induction should lead to talk once again of a possible reunion, at least for the induction ceremony.

Their trajectory was the opposite of the Chili Peppers. Despite troubles that included the drug-related death of guitarist Hillel Slovak and the departure of guitarist John Frusciante, the band, fronted by Anthony Kiedis, with Flea on bass, drummer Chad Smith and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, released its 10th album, "I'm With You," this year.

The Beastie Boys (Adam Yauch, Mike Diamond and Adam Horowitz) are among the pioneers of rap. The first white act to make real inroads in the emerging genre, they were known initially for boorish party music, but would develop into a group critically acclaimed for its musicality, experimenting with different soundscapes, even producing an instrumental album.

Both Stewart and Wood will become second-time members of the Rock Hall (Stewart was inducted as a solo artist in 1994 and Wood as part of the Rolling Stones in 1989) for the Small Faces/The Faces, a key rock group that developed as British invasion was peaking. Among their hits was the song "Stay With Me."

"Well it's quite a thrill and honor to make it in the Hall of Fame a second time," Stewart said in a statement. "We (The Faces) were always synonymous with a good party and with this list of fellow artists being inducted I'm looking forward to (it) ... and it's a hell of a good reason to reunite and celebrate with my old mates."

Donovan is best known for trippy hits like "Mellow Yellow."

Guns N' Roses and the Faces were inducted their first time on the ballot. The Chili Peppers had to wait until their second try, and the Beastie Boys and Nyro were denied twice before making it this time around.

Other inductees include Freddie King for early influence; rock promoter Don Kirshner, who died earlier this year, receives the Ahmet Ertegun award; and Tom Dowd, Glyn Johns and Cosimo Matssa will be honored for musical excellence.

The Rock and Roll Hall of fame induction ceremony will be held in Cleveland, where the rock hall is based, on April 14.

My only problem with the list of inductees is that Heart and Donna Summer should have been inducted. Heart, if for no other reason than longevity, and Donna Summer, because she had too many hits to ignore.

 at Guns N Roses getting in.....wonder if all the originals will show up, or will Axl just have a bunch of them clones play their hits instead...

I like the Beasties and have no problem with them getting in over Eric B & Rakim, they did begin earlier and continue to this day to tour and make music.

Same thing with the Chili Peppers, longevity is key in my opinion.

Donna Summers should have made it though.....

WAR, Rufus & Chaka and Guns and Roses are DUE!

Beastie Boys and E.B. & Rakim will get their's but give it a few more years.

The spinners maybe their due too...

The rest of them I was never a big fan of so I'm not qualified to judge.

But D. Summers did do her thang.

The beastie boys are in no way more influential to hip hop than Eric b and Rakim

That just ridiculous

But I doubt too many hip hop fans are on that voting panel

I saw thought my reply is just opinion based regardless of results, thanks

Roll....that would be nice!

Thanks

They (Beastie Boys) have been there since the early days (1984?) and are still a great draw today. Not sure if Hip Hop influence is the reason they made it but they certainly have had an influence in music.

I love Eric B/Rakim but their overall influence in music wasn't as great as the Beastie Boys.

Eric B. and Rakim will have their day.

LL Cool J ain't in there yet? ....first two albums alone should cement that.

By the way...

why dont we start our own Hall....or do we already have one...?

Have a R&B & hip hall....or jus a hip hop hall....

Russell make it happen...i would say BET but they might fuck it up....

The R&R HoF encompasses all music...besides, Rock & Roll historically is black music which inlfluenced many genres....why abandon it?

Only Grandmaster Flash/FF (2007) and Run DMC (2009) are in the Hall now. Beasties will become the third hip-hop oriented act.

LL was a nominee for the class of 2010 and 2011 - he didn't even make the ballot this year! Sadly, LL will probably never make the ballot again :(

Take a look at some of the hip-hop acts eligible this year who didn't even get nominated: Heavy D/Boyz, Kool Moe Dee, Salt N Pepa, Schooly D. Quite frankly, I would have nominated ANY of them just as quickly as Eric B and Rakim.

And look who is eligible next year: Public Enemy, N.W.A., E.P.M.D., Boogie Down Productions, Jeff/Prince, MC Hammer (don't laugh!).

i was thinking the same sheit. but u can't name but one or two donovan songs that were hits.

donna summer held down the '70s like a mutha fuka though.

i'd lean toward donna on that alone

The spinners - those dudes are from the 60's/70's they should be in already.
Thy need to hurry up and put them in because some of the originals are dead and the others have to be in their seventies. What would be the point of inducting them if none of them are able to accept.

WWWEEELLLLLL....

Maybe this is what we get for ignoring it and calling it "WHITE BOY MUSIC" for decades. Along with the fact that look at the types of acts "our" own awards shows have been honoring for the last 15 years.

You know I'm right!

The people who call it white boy music obviously don't understand the history of it.
