Pat Boone declares himself a 'birther'; say Obama's long-form birth certificate 'is a fraud'
A once wholesome, family friendly crooner from the 1950s proves conspiracy theories never really die.
Pat Boone has boldly declared himself to be "birther," a largely defunct fringe group that believes President Obama was not born a U.S. citizen and should not be allowed to hold the office.
The 77-year-old singer, who is an outspoken member of the Beverly Hills Tea Party, sounded off his political views over the weekend in a San Francisco Chronicle video.
When asked if he believed Obama was born in the United States, he said, "I don't."
"I was in Kenya about a year and a half ago and everybody said, 'You know he was born here,'" he said. "And experts have already looked at and been able to verify that this long form document is a fraud. ... But the media ignores it ... a total fraud. A Photoshopped fraud."
Obama, who was dogged with claims regarding his birth since his 2008 campaign, presented his highly sought long-form birth certificate in April. The revelation largely silenced the group, but some continue to believe the widely discredited belief.
America's so-called "Toughest Sheriff," Arizona lawman Joe Arpaio, recently announced he assigned a "posse" to investigate Obama's origins. Plus, the South Carolina newspaper, The State, reported Tuesday that a new poll shows 36% of Republicans in that state continue to insist Obama was "probably" or "definitely" born outside the U.S.
