Voice Over Career Help!

I'm interested in pursuing voice-over work, but I have no idea how to start. I'm not too far from NYC, so I can make a Saturday audition or meeting.

Growing up, I did a couple of plays, sang in some choirs, and MC'd some events. I worked in sales making presentations to groups and I currently make presentation daiy at work. People always say I have a good voice and should do radio.

Any advice?

Hey, I'm honestly too lazy to grill him for details, but a good friend who was sick of 9-5 bullshit (unlike some people) decided to give it a try, although he's still making income from investing he does on the side...

You have to find one of these classes--like acting classes where they train you. Don't skimp on these cause the good ones will set you up with an agency if you're any good... You're close to NYC, so you can find some... From there the agency will send you on gigs and you'll do voiceover work and may even find yourself on screen... Give yourself at least 2 years chasing your dream... and make sure you got other money coming in while doing it...

First things first, locate the arts area in your city or the best one in NYC. Next find out what their itinerary is for classes or workshops to be introduced into voiceovers.

If the workshop is any good, they will offer online and offline resources to help you get a good coach, find a great studio or how to create one in your home, produce a demo, get an agent, and then find work.

Believe it or not, I read this thread when you first posted it and am in the process of building a voice acting career...it's 7 years overdue.

BTW, if you are looking to get into tv and/or radio, it is still a good idea to take the voice acting class. Be prepared to do a year or 6 months, possibly, in a course on tv or radio while you are getting your career up and ready to rock.

Can I be honest? Unless you are DAMN GOOD and get a contract, I don't think there is gonna be a LOT of money in it. Reason? One word:

For $20 I can get a script for a testimonial, and get 3 professional testimonials done.

Before fiverr, most of these peeps charged top dollar on Voices.com. Give it some though before you delve all the way into it, cause the market is fierce right now.

Doesn't matter where you live. The key is to get clients that use you regularly, and to have good equipment. Be coachable, be empathetic, and be able to emote through your voice, clearly.

The ability to edit audio also helps a lot. Know how to sweeten the audio. This is the kind of job where you want to make clients enjoy dealing with you. If not, another VO guy is right around the corner.
