Microsoft files patent for fast booting OS

One of the big issues with the Windows operating system is boot times. While some PC makers have tried to speed up the time between turning on the power to seeing the desktop, it can still take a little while to get the OS to start working from a cold start up. Now Microsoft has filed for a new patent that it claims will speed up operating system boot times.

The patent, as discovered by Electronista.com, is titled "Fast Machine Booting Through Streaming Storage". Microsoft describes a cloud-based networked system that would allow an operating system like, say, Windows to be streamed into a PC and then stored into memory on that PC. The system sounds a little bit like how OnLive streams its PC games to be played by PC gamers with only a small download file and near instant playing.

The patent states, "The technology facilitates fast boot because the virtual disk is available for use immediately, rather than needing to download an entire operating system image before booting from that downloaded image. For example, during a boot operation, only a relatively small amount of data is needed from the boot disk, which is available from the far data and/or the near data."

So is Microsoft designing a future version of Windows that would be based on the cloud, much like its Office 365 office software suite? And if so would the PC have to be connected to the Internet in order to boot up in the first place? It's an interesting system that we think is still years away from being launched, if ever.

That's part of the reason why MS has so many damn patents, cause this is what they do. They will design new stuff and throw it in the back of the closet, years if not a decade later, bring it back out or wait for a company to make a new product using ideas made years ago. Then they come knocking on the door saying "Hey nice products you guys are making, here pay us this amount to continue on, if not, you know the drill!"

What's funny is people applaud ms for doing but slam others when they do it.

All companies do this. The glass on your phone and other items was made back in the day. Just didn't have a use.

A lot of companies do this method and only Apple & Microsoft get slammed for doing this. I think with the net, having all the info instantly makes everything seem like important news.

Like MoB said, Gorilla glass, Touchscreen UI, Surface, wireless charging, etc all was made many years ago and just either software, hardware, or people just wasn't ready to use it in day to day life.

ms doesn't try to sue their rivals out of business. i can respect what they do, they just wanna get paid and don't try to fuck up how u do business. apple wants u to totally stop competing with them and will sue u to make u stop.

ms does things the adult way

apple does things the bitch ass way...besides apple really isn't super innovative... they just filed a patent for the rectangle and now are trying to sue tablet companies saying they invented tablets that are rectangle... they actually want companies who make tablet to go out of business b/c of a shape...and apple did not invent the rectangle... that's why they get slammed for that bitch shit.

True. They just forces business to bow down to their demands and products.

ms asks for 5 to 30 bucks out of millions sold for each device...that's not unreasonable or crippling. ms actually wants to compete and if they can get paid off it fine but point remains they aren't scared of competition to the point of suing ppl out of business like apple does.

anyway...

go pay ur debt's dude.

I guess you forgot about the US Justice Dept. suing M$ for anti-competitive business practices.

I;m just saying.. fast boot OS is already being done with the version of CMOS, solid state drives and fast web based OS like Chrome OS
Oh, so no one holds the patent for a CPU based OS, still using all the software currently used by most users, booting up by virtual drive?

getting paid and allowing the other company to compete is not anti-competitive.

suing over vague patents and demanding a company not be able to make a profit is.

ms is many things but they aren't scared of competition they just wanna get paid.

apple is terrified of competition and tries to sue.

Suing over patents is the system the US created. To get mad at a company doing it is misplaced aggression. All technology companies apply for an buy up as many patents as they can... why get mad at just 1 or 2 of these companies? Google just bought 17000+ patents.

This is the current patent war.. so why you made at Apple?

I have to agree about that AC, I was sort of shocked that one of Apple's suit was over shapes of the icons.
The UI, I'm sort of on the fence about it, but then again, I'm not 100% sure if it's about the way you move through the apps on each UI, if so, shouldn't they also go after RIM & HP, since it's pretty much the same way? That does paint the picture of wanting to slow Android down, since they are the biggest rival.

exactly... apple didnt invent the grid UI.... that shit existed b4 the iphone was even a thought....and they r suing moto in europe and asking xooms stop being sold b/c they r rectangle shaped & apple claims they invented rectangled tablets.... u can google it i read it last week on bgr and was shocked....

they cant fuck with rim tho rim has patents that can end the iphone.... hp has the palm patents that can end apple too...apple is targeting android b/c they can compete they even ripped off android's notification system...

those other lawsuits r specific every apple lawsuit is vague and based out of fear

It's funny how Motorola made the first iPod phone for Apple and now they are at each other's throat..

Hey Divine, so no company hold the patent for CPU/HDD based OS, using Virtual drive(s) to bootup only, but still using your computer software?

Regarding the UI shapes. Hard call to make.

A designer can sue if you use his fonts he created on digital if your contract/purchase only states that you use it for print.

Those are common lawsuits and renegotiation going on all the time. Wouldn't shapes and fonts be considered the same and if someone created it and had legal right, then they have every right.

as for saying its been around forever, was it around forever and someone owned the patent or was it around forever and no one patented it? cause you would have to consider that if its legit for ms to do so then its legit for apple to do so.

how do u patent a shape? apple patented the rectangle... u gotta admit that's just greedy and stupid...

You do it sorta like this...

http://www.pcworld.com/article/222941/google_patents_google_doodles.html

Google has acquired a U.S. patent for its popular cycling logo system, also known as "Google Doodles." Patent 7,912,915 was granted on Tuesday, nearly 10 years after its initial submission in 2001 by Sergey Brin.

The patent is entitled "Systems and Methods for Enticing Users to a Web Site." The abstract states the patent is for the invention of "periodically changing story line and/or special event company logo to entice users to access a web page." In layman's terms, this means that Brin has patented the "invention"--and I use that term loosely--of changing Google's logo for special events and holidays.

do u see google suing for that? nope...anyone can use that shape and google doesn't care....

apple is openly suing for a rectangle...that's bitch made. tablet's can't be another shape but rectangle.

I'm sure if Yahoo or Bing copied it, they would sue..since they are in direct competition.

not completely true.

Sony Playstation patented a triangle, a circle, a square and an X (or how ever they pronounce it)

Microsoft XBOX has an X, with a swirl (how's that for vague on paper)

their own versions of it anyway.. no different that copy wrighting/patenting a font

if you really want to go out there with it.. apple patented an apple, microsoft a window
