im a night owl too.

 there was no better way to handle it and get yourself one of these for the next time

I get the camera, but how would you use her in such a situation?

Shit they catch me in the wrong im respectful as hell

Usually ballin my ass of they just ask about my car and tell me slow down.

I only really ball late night when the road is clear anyways.

You gotta know how to deal with people.

If you stand out as respectful and kind you will slide most
of the time cause the average mothafucka has no class and
thats all manners is class....remember that shit man.

:smh: at BGOL defending the cop...regardless if its 3am or 3pm following a man a few blocks that is not doing anything suspicious is ridiculous burbs or not...

you want to deter crime make your presence felt....drive by ask the man how he's doing....this does more to deter crime by making a presence than harassing a man in his own community making an errand....

shining a light in his face like he was a damn criminal :smh:....

if he was some funky white boy he would have never been treated like that....

Man take the cop shit out of this

If you asked someone what were they doing today

And they said minding my business

As a man, how would you take that? Most likely you'd be like this dude is an asshole.

I haven't heard that shit since I was a kid. :smh:

That has to be the RUDEST thing a cop has ever done to me and it happened in my first night in Oakland, CA. Im stopped at a 4way stop sign cop pulls up perpedicular to me and shines that damn light and I was blinded for about 15 seconds then he sped off. That was some bitch made shit.

What?!? you didn't chase him, pull him over and let him know you've got rights?!?

Oh wait. your profile says "ATL" so I guess you know better about driving while being black, and opted to drive off pissed and alive instead of confrontational and dead.

ridiculous or not. right or wrong.
the cop was going to do whatever he wanted.

should you incite him or deter him from fucking with you?

this endanger yourself to spite another person mentality really doesn't benefit the OP.

yeah I feel what you saying bruh...but seriously what Blk man in Amerikkka wouldn't feel shook being on a street by himself with a cop following at 3am?

I would....

I don't think OP was being a smart ass by telling the cop he KNOWS HIS RIGHTS....I see whites flex their knowledge on cops all the time.....

IMO thats a good way to defend yourself....at 3am I would be saying this shit loud ass hell too....these lame ass pigs would think twice fucking with s/o who is knowledgeable on his rights.....

Listen the officer here was just doing his job preventing motherfuckers from breaking into cars and committing petty larcenies during the night. The shit happens all night every night across the country and it's one of those crimes that you don't even realize is a problem until it happens to you. There's so much big shit going on in the world, no one even thinks about shit like this until their co worker comes in to work on some "Somebody broke in my fucking car last night and stole my fucking GPS and CD's! He lucky I didnt catch his ass cause he'd have caught a couple hot ones!" :hmm:

I work the midnight shift and the morning shift officers give us all kinda shit cause of the larceny from auto reports they get every morning. Shit is a pain in the ass cause most time the deducible doesn't cover the shit stolen. Last Wed night one guy broke into 20 motherfucking cars. They had to send 3 officers to write ALL THOSE REPORTS. And guess what happened while they were tied up on that petty shit? A busy ass barbershop and 9 niggas inside got robbed.

The scenario you just described was nothing more than an officer creating a presence to deter this kinda crime along with any other type of shit people do under the cover of darkness. You niggas need to calm the fuck down sometimes. I guarantee that if you'd have simply said "hey officer I live around here. I'm a nightowl and I was just walking THESE HERE LETTERS to the mailbox." His ass would have kept it moving.

"AM I BEING DETAINED OR AM I UNDER ARREST":lol::lol::lol:

You people are funny as shit. We have bosses and supervisors that expect a certain level of WORK just like the rest of yall do. I bet if you got robbed while walking to that mailbox you'd have been mad as shit talking about WHY THE FUCK ARENT THE COPS WATCHING THE NEIGHBORHOOD AT NIGHT!?

What you said is totally correct, however, you seem to have side tracked the fact that the black urban community does not have good customer relations with the police, hence the strained relationship.
Maybe if that relationship was nutured and abuses of power stamped upon and be seen to be stamped upon, innocent people would be willing to co-operate with the police.

nb. Ignoring the fact that many of us on this board are thieves of copyrighted material, and could be adjudged to be criminals..

just doing that is enough to deter a criminal from possibly thinking of committing a crime that community.....in his/her mind there is a police presence in this community so committing a crime here is not a good idea....

thats all...all that other shit is just harassment....my sis lives in the burbs I stay out there sometimes...I see all types of ppl walking their dogs....jogging at all times of the night....

the op got defensive bruh whenever i talk to anyone police, old ladies in the street, my students anybody i am always a yes sir/ma'am no sir/ma'am person. people especially our people tend to walk through life too often with attitudes and those attitudes often come out when we dont get our way or when we are confronted by the police.

my mother always told me it is never what you say it is always how you say it.

Man take the cop shit out of this

I haven't heard that shit since I was a kid. :smh:

and if he said he is "minding his business" whats the problem with that?

was he doing anything suspicious?

anything out of the ordinary but walking....

both OP & the cop could have handled it different....

my beef is why must you treat the man like a criminal off GP???

you cats see nothing wrong with this?

if your son came home & told you that he experience this in your community you wouldn't feel he was treated unfairly?

a blk man talking a stroll at 3am is suspicious behavior I guess in the burbs....:dunno:

you say to your son or daughter "what are you doing" they reply "i'm minding my business" you will then respond with a quick jab the throat or a smack to the mouth.:lol::lol: at least that how it was when i was growing up and gave a smart ass response to a simple question.

like i said in my original post right or wrong when someone goes into defense mode like that the shit screams they are guilty of doing some kind of wrong doing

You Talking crap,, had the OP answered the question properly , by saying im walking over to the mailbox to mail this letter, the police would not have followed him and flashi his lights or whatever.. The cop did his job and that is it. The Op was trying to be smart about it.

It ain't like this cat was walking down the street with a Plasma TV in his hands. Shine the light and keep it moving.

And the irony is he spent more time talking to the cop and prolonged the cop's presence...

it may have prolonged his presence but not by much ... because if he thinks i'm up to no good .. he's gonna keep diggin' ... like all of sudden he's columbo (r.i.p.)...

i see it goin' something like..

officer: how ya doin'??
me: fine
officer: where ya headed??
me: to the mailbox.
officer:where ya comin' from??
me: home.
officer: oh yah?? where's home??
me: 123 main st
officer:kinda weird bein' out at 3 in the morning, most people out at this time are either goin' to work or comin' home from work, or committin' crimes, kinda strange you're goin' to the mailbox at this hour, why ya out so late??
me: i like to run my errands at night when nobody's out.
officer: really?? why's that??
me: i'm sort of a night owl.
officer: ya mind showin' me the envelope ya were gonna mail??

and it jus keeps goin' like that ...

:smh::smh:

you niggas are stupid...and we wonder why so many of us are in prison.

if you had just said "i live back there, im just mailing off this letter up here to the mailbox" - that would have ended that "situation" in less than 40 seconds...he would have had no choice but to drive off.

but nah, that's giving in to police intimidation, that is a blow to your manhood, hell that would make you an uncle tom!...can't have that. :hmm:

- bingo. these dudes are like overgrown children...

nah ... a lot of our brothas and sistas are in jail because they agreed to speak to the cops .. or they consented to the search ... or they jus felt if only the officer heard their side of the story he would let them go ...

now ...i'm not advocatin' committin' crimes ... i jus wanna see my people treated fairly ....

and i get the feelin' .. some of y'all would rattle off your entire life story ..if the cop wanted to know it ...

why are some of y'all so trustin' of police officers ... officers that sic dogs on us... worked with outlaw lynch mobs to hunt us down and hang us without any sort of trial ... shoot us in the back when we have surrendered and are lyin' face down on the ground ....

these are the people you think have your best interest at heart??

and this thread was actually supposed to be more of a police/citizen thing.. than a black/white thing..

white people get fucked with too ...

because the reality of life is you are guilty until proven innocent.

you see a chick walking the streets at 3 am in her underwear..she's treated like a whore until proven otherwise.

better cautious than sorry.

my mother always told me it is never what you say it is always how you say it.

but famo what attitude...

"minding My Business"

"I don't want to self incriminate myself"

I've heard worst.....if a cop is following me down my BLOCK shining a light in my face trying to intimidate me.....YES I WILL GET DEFENSIVE.....no attitude tho...

I would must certainly tell them I know my rights as an American.....

I know yall hate cops but come on....that could have been avoided by just saying he was going to the mailbox. Anybody walking around at 3am is suspicious. You know if you see somebody walking past your place at 3am you gonna wonder what the hell they doing.

you say to your son or daughter "what are you doing" they reply "i'm minding my business" you will then respond with a quick jab the throat or a smack to the mouth.:lol::lol: at least that how it was when i was growing up and gave a smart ass response to a simple question.

Dudes must have been brought up differently.

They actually think saying minding my business is a cool reply to a question :smh:

Cops are people also. The energy you give off, is often what you receive in return. That's life, you respect someone and they normally treat you with respect back.

I bet if the OP would have just said I couldn't sleep and I decided to mail some letters...the cop would have been ok, have a nice night or explain why he was doing what he was doing.

I bet if Pacman Jones said that dumb shit people would be calling him stupid.

Best thing he did was keep walking... now the cop was well within the scope of his job duties to simply conduct a "mere inquiry". He stopped short of out right accusing the OP of being up to no good.

The officer was looking for some action that night, its typical of a lot of younger officers on the midnight tour to look for action where generally shit is slow.

minding my business is a defensive smart ass comment in my opinion hell the op may as well as just said fuck off to the cop.

you have to pick and choose your battles more wisely

damn right I pick my battles better yet I choose not to battle unless that is the last resort.

C/S even more so because youre a cop..

Yeah I didnt do much research into a particular brand. I was just posting that particular model for reference purposes.

my last post on this issue...

OP was being smart ass by telling the cop "I know my rights" :smh::rolleyes:

were was the disrespect?

I guess Blk men shouldn't tell the cops he has rights just like anyone else...

cops shines a flashlight in your face.....following you....while you running a errand in your own community...

yet he is the smart ass....:smh:

only on BGOL....

Other than being a bit obnoxious the cop didn't do anything wrong. So it happens again, and you get his badge number and report him. Nothing will happen to him because he didn't violate your rights. Hell, he'll probably just get a pat on the back. If you would have told him you were mailing a letter and he still followed you and harassed you that would be something else.

because the reality of life is you are guilty until proven innocent.

you see a chick walking the streets at 3 am in her underwear..she's treated like a whore until proven otherwise.

annnnnd this is the reason why the cops have been allowed to go from friendly officers walking the beat...to beasts harassing cats in their own neighborhoods.

punk nikkas quick to give up their rights.

back in the day my moms said that everybody knew the 2 cops that walked her hood... 1 white and 1 black. these fools used to buy kids candy from the ice cream truck, tip their hate to women as they walked by, chat with the fellas. thats real policing in my opinion.

they are supposed to respect the people in a neighborhood.

we got so use to getting shitted on through the crack era that we are now just ready to lie down and accept whatever. in fact its really to the point where we just try to position ourselves to not get fucked up by them.

see how that changed in 20 yrs? went from the cops working to protect you to you having to fear the cops.

If you would have told him you were mailing a letter and he still followed you and harassed you that would be something else.

- he knows this...that's why he won't even address this point even though several of us have pointed it out...

my pops is like this and we've gotten in2 several spouts about how he escalates situations just from his attitude of "u ain't gonna do me like that!"

I will say this, you may not sound like a smart ass by stating you know your rights but you may sound like a dumb ass. Whats understood is better left unsaid and a large percentage of the time those who make the effort to say I know my rights really dont. I would go out on a limb and say officers who hear that line know they got easy pickings in their hands.

If the cop was gone watch you, he should have done so from a distance. All those questions, yeah he was harassing the shit out of you.

i would've just told dude where i was goin...if he kept fuckin with me after that then id start being defensive

In a way that's a good thing, because if there is someone in your block that does not need to be there, cops like this find out and get them the fuck out of there.

dumb ass for telling them your rights brotha...?

OP was reacting to the behavior of the cop which was intimidating off jump...the cop is shining his flashlight in your face how do you expect any man to react....

if the officer acted more professional he could have gotten the answers he wanted & Kept it moving...but he chose to shine his light in the mans face for a few blocks for what reason?

how do you expect a blk man to react....???

you damn right I WILL INSTANTLY TELL THEM MY RIGHTS AS AN AMERICAN AS LOUD AS I COULD.....TOO MANY OF US ARE BEING KILLED BY THESE TERRORISTS....

I'm not on some revolutionary militant shit...but I don't see how cats can say OP was wrong when the cop was trying to intimidate him....

And what would you knowing your rights do to protect you by yourself at 3am if that cop was on some grimey shit?

exactly not a damn thing because you wouldn't be able to prove your rights were violated. keywords by yourself .

that is the last time you would want to be antagonistic.

and what would have been different had the OP stated " I am on my way to drop a letter in the mailbox, is there a problem officer?

as I stated before you can cease any conversation when you choose if you feel the officer is on some other shit.

does it really make sense to start off belligerent ?

Since no one else is going to take it there, then, I will.

This combative attitude displayed by the OP is more common to females and single mother reared offspring.

Men raised by both parents normally follow the path of least resistance and peep a situation before acting agitated or hostile.

parents divorced when i was about 3 .. i lived with my mother until i was 12.. and after that i lived with my father till i was grown ... and my father is one of the most honorable men i know ...

Females have that attitude of "I'll say and do whatever the fuck I want without any repercussions". Then cry foul trying to gather support whenever repercussions hit. ("I never did nothing to deserve this!")

the "mind my business" statement ..i wish i could take back ...but like i said in a previous post... he startled me ... and my natural reaction to that question is "none of your goddamn business" ..but after i recognized the situation ...i chose my words very carefully...and i was careful to be assertive but not loud or threatening in my tone...and show that i was in control of my emotions...and i wasn't gonna tell him where i was goin'...

If it was obvious thugs (gang members, mafioso, cartel) instead of the police, would the OP have started with that same attitude? I bet he would have said "I'm not looking for trouble. I just want to mail a letter."

yeah... you're right ...because thugs don't have a rule book they are sworn to uphold ... so apples and oranges ...

What the OP doesn't understand is this.

1....You don't have any rights in this world. It's up to you to prove them in a court of law.

thats what i would attempt to do if the police officer and DA wanted to take it that far...but tell the officer my life story doesn't help my case ...

2....Police and thugs have the advantage over your "minding your own business ass". So it's best not to set shit off before you secure your own safe passage.

why do you keep lumpin' police and thugs in the same sentence??

The bitch-made starting unnecessary shit fool! :hmm:

lol...name callin' accomplishes nothin'...

i like the discussion though...

I C/S the OP, Im just saying the obvious doesnt need to be pointed out. Just keep it moving. Dealing with officers is more like a verbal chess match than is it is about laws & statutes. Choose your words carefully and caress their ego (no homo) and 99% of the time youre on your way. That doesnt mean kiss their ass either, just more of a linguistic exercise, the same way you would talk to a female that you wanted to make comfortable.

wow....is this a
