Zimbabwe marks 30 years of independence on Sunday but many Zimbabweans are asking what happened to the country that bore so much promise.

President Robert Mugabe will be addressing crowds at the national sports stadium in Harare.

All eyes will be on the MDC on Sunday morning. Mugabe has traditionally used Independence Day celebrations to lambaste the former-opposition party and other perceived enemies. Will this year be different? What part will MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai play in the proceedings?

Mugabe dedicated this year’s Independence Day celebrations to China, Zimbabwe’s so-called “all-weather friend”.

The Chinese have just helped refurbish the national sports stadium where thousands are expected to gather.

Buses have been laid on to ferry people to Harare from all parts of the country but the biggest draw will probably be the Independence Cup soccer match which will be played in the stadium after Mugabe’s speech.:dance:
