Russian military dissident Yevgeny Prigozhin has been reported dead in a fiery private jet crash north of Moscow — two months after his failed coup against Moscow.
Prigozhin, the leader of the controversial Wagner paramilitary group, was on the passenger list of the Embraer aircraft that went down en route from the Russian capital to St. Petersburg, the TASS news agency said Wednesday, citing the Federal Agency for Air Transport.
“An investigation of the Embraer plane crash that happened in the Tver Region this evening was initiated. According to the passenger list, first and last name of Yevgeny Prigozhin was included in this list,” the agency stated.

Ten people — seven passengers and three crew members — were on board when the jet went down, SkyNews said.
Prigozhin had led his military group in a mutiny against Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 24, marching toward Moscow before the effort was called off around 100 miles before he reached the capital and the troops agreed to turn around and head back to the front lines.

The crash comes just two days after Prigozhin, 62, shared his first video address since his aborted Kremlin coup.
The unverified footage of the mercenary in camouflage toting an assault weapon appeared on Telegram channels tied to Wagner on Tuesday.

The video is believed to have been shot somewhere in Africa, as a plane linked to Prigozhin is thought to have landed in Bamako, Mali, on Sunday.
The Wagner Group was hired by a local military junta in Mali in 2021, after UN peacekeepers and French troops were expelled from the country.
Prior to the footage leak, Prigozhin had kept a low profile since the brief June mutiny that threatened to usurp Russia’s military chiefs over their handling of the Ukraine war.

Wagner fighters have suffered heavy losses in the conflict, where they are leading the assault on Bakhmut.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko brokered a fragile peace deal between Putin and Prigozhin, who agreed to call off the march on Moscow in exchange for pardons for himself and his troops.

The former Kremlin restaurateur also accepted going into exile in Belarus.
The punishment was apparently short-lived: A criminal case against Prigozhin was eventually dropped, and his confiscated weapons arsenal and over $111 million in cash and gold bars were even returned to him.

I have contacts in the country, he timed this assassination to send a message on why Russia is annexing this part of the country. These ethnic Russians forced to be a part of Ukraine will turn into us.

The Russians also baited the U.S. into banning RT with its hostile content that was free speech but undermined the efforts of the U.S. government. Conspiracy theories that Wagner boss Yevengy Prigozhin may still be alive have started to gain traction after a second private jet linked to the mercenary leader was spotted flying to Moscow.
Prigozhin, who led a failed coup against the Kremlin’s top brass less than two months ago, was listed as one of ten passengers aboard the Embraer aircraft that crashed on Wednesday with no survivors.
While a Telegram channel linked to Wagner shared news of the fatal crash, the Kremlin and the Defence Ministry have not commented, prompting rumors that Prigozhin faked his death.
Speculation has grown that Prigozhin may have evaded the fiery fate after news spread that a second private jet linked to the Wagner group landed safely in St. Petersburg around the same time as the crash.
Footage showed the second jet — an Embraer ERJ-135BJ Legacy 650 aircraft — landing safely at Ostafyevo airport, The Sun reported.

It’s not the first time Prigozhin, 62, was mistakenly thought to be dead. Last month, a former senior US military leader speculated that Prigozhin was either dead or jailed, following a much-publicized meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin after his botched rebellion that was likely faked.
Prigozhin also previously faked his own death in Africa in 2019 before showing his face again three days later.
Russia expert from the UK-based think tank Chatham House Keir Giles speculated the Wagner boss may pop up again soon.

“Multiple individuals have changed their name to Yevgeniy Prigozhin, as part of his efforts to obfuscate his travels,” he told The Sun. “Let’s not be surprised if he pops up shortly in a new video from Africa.”
In a separate interview with Sky News, Giles noted, “This is a man who took his security very seriously, even before he made himself a marked man by marching on Moscow.”
The bodies of the ten passengers have been taken in for forensic examination to hopefully produce positive identifications.

President Biden said he wasn’t surprised by the fatal plane crash that appeared to have a Putin enemy on board.
“I don’t know for a fact what happened. But I’m not surprised,” Biden told reporters. “There is not much that happens in Russia that Putin is not behind, but I don’t know enough to know the answer.”

The investigation into the crash is under the “personal control” of the governor of the Tver region, Igor Rudenya, according to TASS.
