We go couple times each year...especially during the winter season for activities at the ski resorts. There's a lot to do there depending on what you're into or if you care to explore. We prefer to rent vacation homes.
North Lake area is more chill with little night life. South Lake area has all the casinos with a lively nightlife. Heavenly ski resort is southside and has some of the most amazing vistas of the Lake and mountains. North Lake is about a one hour drive to South area, depending on snow conditions, which can dump a lot within a very short time frame.
The casinos will generally offer some great rates/comps to stay. A variety of airports to fly into and if you rent a vehicle, great scenery on way up. Be very aware of snow conditions that time of year and be prepared without fear of asking questions. Tahoe area is loads of fun but can also be very dangerous.
Feel free to pm with any questions.
