EXCLUSIVE: The Walt Disney Company has extended its relationship with Black Panther director and co-writer Ryan Coogler. Disney has made a five-year overall exclusive television deal with Coogler’s Proximity Media, which he runs with principals Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, Ludwig Göransson, Archie Davis and Peter Nicks. Coogler, who is working on the Black Panther feature sequel he will direct this year, will develop new television series for the studio. The first one will delight Black Panther fans: a drama based in the Kingdom of Wakanda for Disney+. The deal also enables Proximity to develop television for other divisions of the Company.

“Ryan Coogler is a singular storyteller whose vision and range have made him one of the standout filmmakers of his generation,” said Bob Iger, Executive Chairman, The Walt Disney Company. “With Black Panther, Ryan brought a groundbreaking story and iconic characters to life in a real, meaningful and memorable way, creating a watershed cultural moment. We’re thrilled to strengthen our relationship and look forward to telling more great stories with Ryan and his team.”

Said Coogler: “It’s an honor to be partnering with The Walt Disney Company. Working with them on Black Panther was a dream come true. As avid consumers of television, we couldn’t be happier to be launching our television business with Bob Iger, Dana Walden and all the amazing studios under the Disney umbrella. We look forward to learning, growing, and building a relationship with audiences all over the world through the Disney platforms. We are especially excited that we will be taking our first leap with Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and their partners at Marvel Studios where we will be working closely with them on select MCU shows for Disney+. We’re already in the mix on some projects that we can’t wait to share,” stated Ryan Coogler on behalf of Proximity Media.”

Coogler founded the multi-media company Proximity with Zinzi Coogler, Ohanian, Göransson, Davis and Nicks with a mission to create event-driven feature films, television, soundtracks and podcasts that look to bring audiences closer together through stories involving often-overlooked subject matters. Proximity intends to generate a wide variety of projects across all budget levels.

Coogler’s rise to the Hollywood A-list has been meteoric. His debut came on the lauded Fruitvale Station, and he reunited with Michael B Jordan on Creed, after persuading Sylvester Stallone to allow him to revive his Rocky Balboa character and franchise. Creed has turned into a franchise of its own. Coogler then followed with Black Panther, a film that grossed north of $1.3 billion globally, the most for a film by a Black filmmaker. It created a global zeitgeist groundswell and became the first superhero film to get a Best Picture Oscar nomination. Star Chadwick Boseman died last year, and Coogler and Disney are moving forward with a sequel he has written, one that will not recast another actor in that role.

The deal was negotiated on behalf of Proximity Media by WME, Charles King of M88 and Jonathan Gardner, Esq. of Cohen & Gardner.

Chadwick Boseman’s Wife Honors Him in Posthumous Golden Globe Acceptance Speech
By Halle Kiefer@hallekiefer
Photo: NBC

As viewers of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom likely predicted, the late Chadwick Boseman won Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama at Sunday’s Golden Globes for his turn in the film. As she did in January following his Gotham Awards win, Boseman’s widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, gave an impassioned acceptance speech on the actor’s behalf. “He would thank God,” she says, fighting back tears. “He would thank his parents. He would thank his ancestors for their guidance and their sacrifices.”

“He would say something beautiful,” Ledward continues. “Something inspiring, something that would amplify that little voice inside of all of us that tells you you can. That tells you to keep going. That calls you back to what you are meant to be doing at this moment in history. He would thank Mr. George C. Wolfe, Mr. Denzel Washington, lots of people at Netflix. He would thank Mrs. Viola Davis,” among many others.

“I don’t have his words, but we have to take all the moments to celebrate those we love, so thank you, HFPA, for this opportunity to do exactly that,” she concludes. “And, hon? You keep ’em coming.”

Disneyland reveals possible development: Are Frozen and Black Panther coming soon?

EW breaks down the speculative concept art for the "DisneylandForward" proposal for future developments (that might include new Wakanda, Frozen, Tangled, and Zootopia attractions).
By Joey Nolfi

The Disneyland Resort has yet to reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic (mouse ears crossed for its April 30 relaunch), but, Disney is already conjuring more magic with a major proposal for property investment potentially headed to its California location.
This week, the House of Mouse launched its "DisneylandForward" initiative, billed as "a multiyear public planning effort with the City of Anaheim to update existing development approvals that will allow Disney to meaningfully invest in Anaheim for years to come and meet the future demands in entertainment." It is a direct response to the city of Anaheim previously approving long-term development rights for the resort in the 1990s that sectioned off distinct portions of land for certain types of expansion, including zoned districts for hotels, theme park additions, and more. The DisneylandForward proposal claims the existing, outdated approvals "limit [the park's] ability to continue to invest in Anaheim and bring the types of experiences guests are demanding today."

CREDIT: DISNEYLAND RESORTS

While the proposal includes concept art teasing possible expansion into underdeveloped property on both the Disneyland and Disney California Adventure lot, Disney hasn't announced specifics regarding what might be on the way if the vision comes to life. Judging by the concept art, though, any potential expansion could be accessible from both existing parks.

According to a Disney representative, "these are not expansion plans" but rather "a planning effort to allow for more integrated experiences and investment." While there are no concrete rides or lands under construction, the concept art teases what could be around the corner pending approval for a massive evolution of the park. EW has further confirmed with Anaheim city spokesperson Mike Lyster that conversations are ongoing, and that the DisneyForward proposal is part of a larger, two-year effort to develop and rezone parcels of land on Disneyland property.
Below, EW breaks down the concept art released so far, which points to possible additions based on movies like Black Panther, Frozen, Tangled, Zootopia, Toy Story, Tron, and more.

Wakanda from Black Panther
In recent years, Disney has increased Marvel's presence at its global properties. Disney California Adventure will open its Avengers Campus later this year, while the park's Tower of Terror drop ride was recently converted to a Guardians of the Galaxy motif from its Twilight Zone theme. More Marvel attractions are also operating at Hong Kong Disneyland (namely an Iron Man simulator), with major rides on deck for that park in the near future.

DisneylandForward, however, offers perhaps the most exciting preview of a potential Marvel attraction to date. Although the site does not specifically mention Wakanda or Black Panther by name, eagle-eyed fans have found similarities between locales from the Chadwick Boseman-starring superhero movie and the top-down schematic on Disney's website.

Arendelle from Frozen
As part of a multi-year overhaul of Florida's Epcot park, the company announced plans to revamp the look and feel of the destination to include more family-friendly hallmarks from Disney properties. The phased opening — which began with the conversion of The Living Seas aquarium to a Finding Nemo pavilion — further touted future rides and attractions based on Ratatouille, Guardians of the Galaxy, Moana, and more.
The expansion later spread into the park's World Showcase section in 2016, when the Norway land's Maelstrom boat ride underwent a massive refurbishment before reopening as Frozen Ever After, incorporating characters and scenes from the Oscar-winning movie. DisneylandForward also references the potential addition of Arendelle, as well as a boat-based journey through the world of the film and a restaurant inside a large castle, if expansion is permitted for rezoned districts.

Zootopia
Piggybacking on Shanghai Disneyland's long-gestating Zootopia land, Anaheim might soon be home to an intricate City of Zootopia pavilion capturing the hustle and bustle of the 2016 animated film's titular critter metropolis. Details regarding Shanghai's version remain slim (though concept art confirms an appearance by Shakira's hooved pop star, Gazelle), though DisneyForward touts a potential major ride that, if approved, could "blend Disney storytelling and state-of-the-art technology to bring this fan-favorite movie and its characters to life."

image

CREDIT: DISNEYLAND RESORTS
Tangled
Guests have long delighted in the absurdity of the Magic Kingdom's delightfully odd, one-off addition of a Tangled-themed bathroom at the Florida resort, but a full-fledged land based on the Mandy Moore-starring 2010 animated story (loosely based on the classic Rapunzel tale) might be in the works.

image

Using the version currently under construction at Tokyo DisneySea's Fantasy Springs as an example, a potential Tangled land in California could spotlight a physical recreation of Rapunzel's Tower from the film and, if we're lucky, another epic Tangled bathroom lifted from Disney World.
The DisneyForward site also references a gondola ride traveling through a lantern festival to capture the essence of Rapunzel's "best day ever," as well as a restaurant modeled after a scene that sees the character befriending a band of thieves.

Neverland from Peter Pan

image

Though no major, full-land recreations of Peter Pan's cinematic world exist at any Disney parks (outside of the standalone Peter Pan's Flight dark rides at five locations, and an in-development area at Tokyo Disneyland's Fantasy Springs), the DisneyForward initiative includes concept art speculating what a Neverland pavilion — that could feature a boat ride where Tinker Bell guides riders down a river with the Lost Boys, and another dark ride where Tink takes guests to her fairy-filled Pixie Hollow home — might look like if it were to be built at Disneyland.
CREDIT: DISNEYLAND RESORTS

Toy Story
One of Disney's most popular movie franchises has translated into one of its most beloved in-person experiences. Since 2010, themed lands based on the Toy Story films have opened at four Disney parks around the world, including France's Walt Disney Studios, Florida's Disney's Hollywood Studios, Shanghai Disneyland, and Hong Kong Disneyland. California Adventure also contains a Toy Story Mania! interactive dark ride, though the park doesn't boast a dedicated Toy Story section.

If approved, DisneyForward's long-term plans appear to include attractions inspired by past Toy Story Land additions, and may include roller coasters inspired by Slinky Dog and RC Racer, Pizza Planet's green aliens, and Woody's lunch box — all experienced by guests who will traverse the larger-than-life recreations of everyday objects as if they've "shrunk" down to the size of a toy.
See a walk-through tour of Shanghai Disneyland's Toy Story Land below.

Tron
A little right of center in the overview image on the concept art, you can see two large, purple canopies standing in front of a show building. The only other Disney Parks attraction to utilize a similar structure is Shanghai Disneyland's Tron Lightcycle Power Run roller coaster — a second version of which is currently under construction at Disney World's Magic Kingdom.

Manufactured by Dutch firm Vekoma — the same company that worked with Disney on Animal Kingdom's Expedition Everest and the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind coaster heading to Epcot — the coaster features technologically advanced, neon-coated theming that immerses riders in the world of the Tron franchise as they launch from zero-to-60 miles per hour across twisted steel track.
See a POV video from the Shanghai Disneyland version below.

A new entertainment district
Finally, DisneylandForward opens up the possibility of a new entertainment district made in the likeness of Florida's Disney Springs, with a focus on catering "to locals, conventioneers, hotel and Disneyland Resort guests with restaurants, hotels, live music, shopping, ticketed shows, and theme park experiences modeled after the popular Disney Springs at Walt Disney World Resort."

image

All of this, the website says, will only be possible with intense investment in area transportation, with Disney supposedly planning "to significantly invest in transportation, parking, transit and pedestrian safety measures to improve mobility throughout The Anaheim Resort."

Chadwick Boseman was honored in more ways than one at last night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards. Up for two awards, the late actor won in Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. His wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, accepted the posthumous award on his behalf with a heartfelt speech thanking the cast and crew, including playwright August Wilson, Viola Davis, and Colman Domingo, as well as Denzel Washington, producer and a longtime hero of Boseman’s. “If you see the world unbalanced, be a crusader that pushes heavily on the seesaw of the mind,” Ledward said. “That’s a quote by Chadwick Boseman. Thank you, Screen Actors. Thank you, Chad.” The 43-year-old star of Black Panther died in August 2020 of colon cancer. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom was his final performance. So far, it’s earned him a SAG and Golden Globe Award.

Boseman was also up for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods. The prize ultimately went to Daniel Kaluuya, who plays Illinois Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah. But Kaluuya also honored the late actor in his acceptance speech Sunday night. “I want to share this with LaKeith Stanfield, Dominique Fishback, Jermaine Fowler, and all the incredible day players that show up,” he said, thanking his co-stars. “And Chairman Fred Hampton for guiding us and showing us his power, even though 52 years later. This one’s for Chadwick Boseman and this one is for Chairman Fred Hampton.” This is Kaluuya’s third nomination and second win at the SAG Awards, beating out Sacha Baron Cohen (The Trial of The Chicago 7), Jared Leto (The Little Things), and Leslie Odom Jr. (One Night in Miami)

CHADWICK BOSEMANPLEASE DON'T CALL IT AN OSCARS SNUB ...Bro Says Family Not Upset

Chadwick Boseman's family has a message for those saying the late actor got snubbed from an Oscar ... he was NOT snubbed, and shout out to Sir Anthony Hopkins for the win.
Chadwick's brother, Derrick Boseman, tells TMZ ... he doesn't view Chadwick not winning an Oscar for Best Actor as a snub because every nominated actor was excellent and deserving of the award. He says the family isn't upset or agitated whatsoever that Chadwick's name wasn't called at the end of the Oscars ceremony.

What's more ... Derrick tells us the family wishes Hopkins and his family all the best because, as Derrick put it, "I"m sure [Anthony] would if Chad won." Don't forget ... after AH won the award for his role in 'The Father' his gracious message included a shout-out to Chadwick.
As we first reported ... a throng of celebs felt Chadwick got snubbed following his stellar performance on 'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom' ... his last role before he died. Model Winnie Harlow brought it up herself ... calling it "insane" Chadwick didn't get a statue.

Derrick says Chadwick wasn't one to put too much value on the Oscars anyway. Derrick says Chadwick "always described them to me as a campaign." That being said ... Derrick says, yes, an Oscar would have been an achievement, but was never an obsession.

Michael B. Jordan says it’s unlikely he’ll return for Black Panther 2, but ‘never say never’

We may not have seen the last of Erik Killmonger.
By Devan Coggan
April 30, 2021 at 07:34 PM EDT

According to Michael B. Jordan, we may not have seen the last of Erik Killmonger.

Appearing on SiriusXM's Jess Cagle Show this week, the Black Panther alum addressed whether he might ever return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

When Cagle asked him how likely he was to reprise his role as Killmonger on a scale of 1 to 10 — 10 being very likely, and 1 not at all — the actor had a diplomatic answer.

"I'm gonna go with a solid 2," Jordan said with a laugh. "I didn't want to go zero! Never say never. I can't predict the future."

Admittedly, a Killmonger reappearance seems like a long shot, given that — spoiler alert! — the character died at the end of 2018's Black Panther. But the MCU has a past history of resurrecting the thought-to-be-dead, and there's always a chance that Jordan could pop back up in a flashback cameo.

Jordan added that he doesn't have much insight into the upcoming Black Panther 2, but he has tremendous faith in writer-director Ryan Coogler and how he'll continue T'Challa's story after the death of star Chadwick Boseman.

"I honestly don't know much at all," Jordan added. "All I know is they're developing a script that is a reflection of a lot of circumstances and tragedy that we had to deal with this past year. I know Ryan and Marvel are going to do the absolute best job at developing the story in a way that makes everybody happy and satisfied and honors Chad and moves forward with grace."

Coogler is returning to write and direct the upcoming sequel, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed that Boseman's role as Wakandan king T'Challa will not be recast. Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, and Letitia Wright are all expected to return for the new film, which is scheduled to hit theaters July 8, 2022.

Michael Rooker opens up about 'beautiful' What If...? episode with Chadwick Boseman

"I think people are going to not just enjoy it, but also it's going to be meaningful in a lot of different levels," Rooker tells EW.

What If...? (Marvel TV series)

WATCH IT NOW ON
Disney+,
Michael Rooker can't stop gushing over how beautiful this week's episode of Marvel's What If...? is.
The premise is simple: What if his Guardians of the Galaxy character Yondu Udonta accidentally kidnapped T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) from Earth as a child instead of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt)? The answer is just as simple: T'Challa becomes Star-Lord. But the ripple effects from that character swap are anything but — having T'Challa join the Ravagers has shockingly far-reaching consequences in this version of the MCU, and while Rooker won't spoil what they are, he can't stop praising how the story turns out. "It's just so wonderful, it's great stuff," he tells EW.
And while Rooker didn't work with Boseman in person while recording the voiceover work, he's touched that their adventure together is Boseman's final appearance in the MCU after the actor died of complications from a secret battle with colon cancer in 2020. "Oh my goodness, their relationship is beautiful," Rooker says of how Yondu and T'Challa bond in this new timeline. "This is an absolutely wonderful piece. This one, in particular, is beautiful. I think people are going to not just enjoy it, but also it's going to be meaningful in a lot of different levels."

Rooker will be the first to admit he had no idea what he was signing up for when he first got the call to join What If...? But once he had a better idea of what to expect from the Marvel/Disney+ animated series, he was all in. "I really love voiceover too, so to be involved with this was very special for me," he says. "And to bring back Yondu was a really beautiful thing."

Below, Rooker opens up about the episode and what he hopes this means for his own future in the MCU — despite his character's onscreen death in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2.
CREDIT: MARVEL STUDIOS
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: This episode is Chadwick's final time playing T'Challa. Did you get to speak with him about the episode or record together at all?

MICHAEL ROOKER:
We never got to hang out or speak together and work together on the project really. A lot of stuff is already shot and it's already recorded usually, and at the end of the day, it's all put together and where did all the time go? You do your part, and he does his part, and it's really quick. It took us several sessions but it was really a blast. I had no idea that it ended up being his last performance. Boy oh boy, what a shame. What a loss. It was terrible. But the work, the legacy of the work is there for everyone to see.
What was your reaction when you learned you were going to get to reprise the role after Yondu's onscreen death in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2?
When we got a [What If...?] trailer we could post [on social media] and everything, it was really fun to say, "Guess what? Yondu's back!" And it was like, "Yes!" I look even better as an animated cartoon in an animated story. [Laughs] I was like wow, they made me look good.
That's an unexpected perk of voicing a character in animation.
[Laughs] They can make you look really good. Better than you look in real life. Although my makeup people for Yondu, I've got to tell you, they are geniuses. That makeup was so good you just literally forget that you have it on. It feels like your regular skin, and it looks so rich and has depth. I did a convention this past weekend and a little boy looked really confused. He was very shy and he whispered to his mom and dad a question and they repeated it to me. He says, "Why isn't he blue?" I think he was about seven or eight. And I told him that this is my human makeup when I'm on Earth. And my fin is underneath my hat and my ship is on top of the roof of this building. [Laughs] And the kid's eyes were like big, giant saucers. It was a beautiful experience.
That's so sweet. You preserved the magic for him.
He was right at that age where he still wants it to be real. It was just so cute. I came up with that in the spur of the moment because I didn't want to be like, "Look kid, it's just a film, okay? [Laughs] I know I look better in blue but I'm stuck in this skin." He's totally going to remember that.
What did you think about the script for this episode when you read it for the first time?
When I went first to read it, I was like, "Oh, this is good. This is really cool. What a great take on it." It's the perfect What If…? story. It just felt very special, knowing what I know now. It was very heartwarming to be involved with it. I feel so blessed to get to bring this character to life.
How does having T'Challa as Star-Lord influence Yondu and the rest of the Ravagers in this timeline?
Honestly, my role, Yondu, didn't really change a whole heck of a lot from James Gunn's version onscreen. I still treat Star-Lord as my son. So I had it easy because I've already played the role. So having a different Star-Lord, it made no difference to me. It was beautifully written, and he becomes quite heroic. The Ravagers and Yondu are made better because of him. It's good stuff. And the animation is gorgeous. I mean, kids get to see all the really great stuff. [Laughs] When I was a kid the animation was like stick figures.
What surprised you about this episode?
That in itself surprised me! [Laughs] Literally, I didn't expect it. Someone called my agent or my manager and told them about it, and they told me about it, and I actually didn't know what What If…? was. I went back and I saw some of the comics and then I was like, oh okay, I get it. Just being involved with [the MCU's] very first animated series is just a joy. And the first episode has been dynamite, so I really hope our audience will enjoy the heck out of this one. I know I did while making it. And seeing it, it's like I wasn't even involved with it and I'm watching it for the first time and I'm a fan.
How does this episode open the door for you to return to the MCU in the future?
Well, I certainly hope it does. That would be a great "what if." [Laughs] I would jump on that bandwagon right away. It is a wonderful little niche in the armor to open it up and see what happened, what could happen. What if we told more of Yondu's story and the Ravagers? I bloody think the fans would go crazy over it. I think it'd be a blast for fans to get to experience that because you gave them a beautiful story and a window and now it can kind of be whatever you want it to be. We've got our fingers crossed. We want more!

Lupita Nyong'o shares poignant tribute to Chadwick Boseman on anniversary of his death

By Tyler Aquilina
August 28, 2021 at 11:48 AM EDT

One year to the day after Chadwick Boseman's death, his friend and Black Panther costar Lupita Nyong'o shared another poignant tribute to the Oscar-nominated actor.
"I did not know that I could miss both his laughter and his silence in equal measure. I do. I do..." Nyong'o wrote on Instagram Saturday, alongside a candid photo of the two stars laughing together. "One year after his passing, the memory of @chadwickboseman remains this alive in me."

Boseman died of colon cancer on Aug. 28, 2020, at the age of 43, having kept his condition largely private for four years. His passing prompted a massive outpouring of grief from his fans, friends, collaborators, and fellow celebrities, almost all of whom had been unaware of his diagnosis.

"I am struggling to think and speak about my friend, Chadwick Boseman, in the past tense. It doesn't make sense," Nyong'o wrote shortly after his death. "The news of his passing is a punch to my gut every morning. I am aware that we are all mortal, but you come across some people in life that possess an immortal energy, that seem like they have existed before, that are exactly where they are supposed to always be — here! ... that seem ageless... Chadwick was one of those people."

Nyong'o was among those present at a private memorial service in Malibu a week after Boseman's death, along with her fellow Black Panther costars Michael B. Jordan and Winston Duke. The Oscar-winning actress is returning for the upcoming sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which was extensively reworked in the wake of Boseman's passing. Marvel has chosen not to recast the role of T'Challa in honor of the late actor.

Boseman's final performance as T'Challa was recently released on Marvel's animated series What If...? "He cared about T'Challa so much — all the actors care about these characters but Chadwick Boseman understood the power of Black Panther and his role as an icon," the show's head writer A.C. Bradley told EW. "It was super important to him to make sure T'Challa is always presented as a role model and a hero."

The report had it going to the court for settling the estate. Don’t know how true that is, and can’t see WTF would cost 900K.
I hate this fucking country sometimes. The older i get and the more utter bullshit I see I begin to hate it more and more. So much fuck shit.

It's like Court Costs when you get a ticket. I've had a cop lie, proved in court the cop lied. Had the ticket dismissed, but I had to pay Court Costs...which was the same fucking amount as the ticket.
