Some Women Allergic to Semen-can produce symptoms such as itching

Randy Dotinga

Some women who experience vaginal itching, burning and other symptoms after sex might be allergic to their partner's semen.

According to new research, the extremely rare allergies to seminal fluid can cause symptoms ranging from simple irritation to anaphylactic shock.

While there are no reports of anyone dying from the condition, it's possible that someone could stop breathing just like people who die after being exposed to bee stings and peanuts, said Dr. David Resnick, an allergist and acting director of the division of allergy at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.

"Physicians need to be aware that this does happen. If they do come across a patient like this, they should be referred to a specialist who deals with the condition," said Resnick, who was scheduled to make a presentation about semen allergy this week at the annual meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, in Philadelphia.

Semen allergy appears to be quite uncommon. According to Resnick, doctors have reported about 80 cases of semen allergy in medical literature. Still, Resnick said he sees about two cases a year, and the full extent of the condition is unknown.

In a small number of cases, a woman with existing allergies can suffer a reaction to food, drink or medication that her male sex partner ate earlier. Tiny particles can make their way into semen and irritate the woman's vagina. Penicillin, walnuts and cola have been implicated in some cases, Resnick said.

It's much more likely for a woman to be allergic to the semen itself, Resnick said. The cause appears to be a protein produced by the prostate gland that is a component of seminal fluid.

Some women can "just have local reactions and burning, itching and pain, and then there are women that have generalized reaction where there are hives all over the body, vomiting, diarrhea, wheezing, difficulty breathing," he said.

Most cases occur after vaginal intercourse, but some cases are related to oral sex, Resnick said. Anal sex could conceivably cause an allergic reaction, too.

So, what can a woman with the condition do?

Allergy shots are one treatment, or simply waiting for the allergy to go away. Dr. Ronald Simon, an allergist at Scripps Clinic, in San Diego, and colleagues have written about another treatment in which an anti-allergy drug was mixed into contraceptive gel and then inserted into the vagina.

Another alternative: The man could wear a condom, Simon said, and protect his partner from exposure to semen. But, latex condoms won't work if either partner is allergic to them.

Knew a chick who had real sensitive skin and wasn't allergic to the semen or sperm, but the combination of cum & fluids on her face;
to each their own

Dang, this one chick I used to smash a couple years ago was allegic to lubricants on condoms and she would always break out in hives after 10 minutes into sex. But hearing about women being allergic to semen is a new one for me.

Trace it might have been the nonoxynol 9. I have a sensitivity to it as well. It's not that big a deal because there are many condoms lubricated without spermicides. If she was allergic to the actual lube ingredients, visiting a sex shop is a good way to see the many many different varieties of lube.

The lady at the one I go to is wild! She gives all kinds of good advice.

I am alergic to latex as well.:smh:

McGuyver you can use the polyurethane! Poly does protect against HIV, but in my experience people either love it or hate it.

That lady I mentioned doesn't like the poly either though she is not allergic.

Rough aint it girl! Fire down below

I know a woman allergic to latex and it sucks for her she can only use lambskin and that doesn't protect against HIV.

Last time i checked Durex was producing a plastic based condom which does the job quite well for those with allergies.

Abstract

This randomized crossover trial compared the breakage and slippage rates, safety, and acceptability of the recently developed polyurethane bi-directional eZ·on™ condom with a marketed latex condom. Three hundred sixty couples were asked to use 4 eZ·on condoms and 4 latex condoms. Like several other non-latex condoms tested to date, the eZ·on condom had a higher clinical breakage rate than its latex comparator, while the slippage rates were similar.

The clinical breakage rate for the eZ·on condom was 5.6%, compared with 0.9% for the latex condom (difference = 4.76%, with upper 95% confidence bound on the DIFFERENCE = 6.26%). Thus, based on an a priori definition of a 2% clinically acceptable difference, the study failed to conclude equivalence relative to clinical breakage.

The complete slippage rate for eZ·on was 1.6%; compared to 0.7% for latex (difference = 0.87%, with upper 95% confidence BOUND = 1.55%). Thus, based on an a priori definition of a 2% difference we concluded equivalence relative to complete slippage. The safety profile of the eZ·on condom was good and similar to the latex condom.

The eZ·on was also found to be easier to don and remove than the latex condom. Although no overall preference existed for either condom, nearly 30%women and men strongly preferred the eZ·on condom to the latex condom. The eZ·on condom may be an acceptable alternative for couples unable or unwilling to use latex condoms.

Alex see my post to McGuyver regarding alternative condom materials :)- you are quite correct. I was referring to that particular woman. She does not like those and will only use the lambskin.
