Will The Young Avengers Replace The 'Inhumans' Movie In Marvel's Phase 3?
by Eleanor Tremeer, April 26th, 2016 at 2:57am
After months of being shifted around in Marvel's release schedule, the
Inhumans movie has been removed completely from Phase 3. This has sent fans into a flurry of speculation on why the film seems to have been shelved, and what it could be replaced with.
According to ComicBook.com, the last word from Kevin Feige was that
Inhumans would still get made, but that was a while ago. With
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. exploring the Inhumans in Seasons 2 and 3, it makes sense that the
Inhumans movie might clash with this.
Agents Of Shield explored the Terrigan Mist plot.
So, assuming for the moment that the
Inhumans movie is off the table, what could Marvel explore instead? There are plenty of options, especially in the wake of
Captain America: Civil War, and we're excited about every one.
Young Avengers
The Young Avengers are a teen/young adult superhero team, taking up the legacies of the Avengers themselves.
Young Avengers Vol. 2 saw them work with Kid Loki.
In the wake of the
Avengers: Disassembled plot line, several teenagers gathered together to become superheroes. Led by Cassie Lang (Ant-Man's daughter), they took down Kang the Conqueror and slowly earned the respect of the adult Avengers. While many of the characters emulated their heroes (with Nate Richards as Iron Lad and Eli Bradley as Patriot), Kate Bishop officially became Hawkeye as Clint Barton was in hiding.
So, how would this work in Phase 3? The
Inhumans movie was set for a 2018 release date, in between the two parts of
Infinity War. Depending on what happens in
Civil War and
Infinity War Part One, it seems highly likely that the events of these films will be explosive and devastating enough for a new team to rise.
The Young Avengers smash stereotypes.
As for the team itself, the Young Avengers are a much loved part of the Marvel comics. The characters have compelling storylines, with all of them overcoming great hardships to become heroes. Considering Marvel's youthful fanbase, a Young Avengers movie could really chime with audiences. The movie could also introduce the MCU's first gay couple with Billy Kaplan and Hulkling.
Then there's the fact that two of the characters — Billy and Tommy Shepherd — are the long lost, time traveling children of Scarlet Witch and Vision. Which would certainly be interesting in the MCU canon!
Ms. Marvel & The Inhumans
Another much loved character in the Marvel comics is Ms. Marvel (a.k.a. Kamala Khan), who became a superhero after the Terrigen Mist turned her into an Inhuman.
Kamala Khan takes up the Ms Marvel mantle.
The Ms. Marvel comics have grown very popular, thanks to the fact that the heroine is one of Marvel's few Muslim heroes. Her story is compelling and fun: a self-confessed, fanfic-writing nerd, Kamala's determination to become a superhero clashes with her home and family life, making her very relatable.
A Ms. Marvel movie would be a way to incorporate the Inhuman plot without clashing with the
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. storylines, as Ms. Marvel takes a lot more from her idol, Captain Marvel. And yet, with Carol Danvers's own movie premiering in 2018 too, Marvel would have to make a Ms. Marvel film very distinct from her namesake's.
Return Of The Mutants?
The apparent cancellation of
Inhumans has lead many fans to speculate that Marvel might be betting on a different, and yet similarly mutated team.
Could the X-Men join the MCU?
That's right, some believe Disney and Fox are in talks to combine their two universes, bringing the X-Men crashing into the MCU canon. And yet, as much as many fans would like to see a movie team-up of their favorite comic book characters, the runaway success of Fox's
X-Men movies (not to mention
Deadpool) makes it seem very unlikely that they'd have anything to gain from selling the characters back to Marvel.
A crossover team-up movie might not be entirely off the table however, especially after Marvel's collaborative deal with Sony (which is why we're getting
Spider-Man: Homecoming).
X-Men v Avengers
But for this to take place in 2018 would take a lot of organization on the part of both studios, and it would probably detract from the impact of
Infinity War. However, there is a property Fox might be willing to sell.
The Fantastic Four Rise Again!
It's no secret that the latest
Fantastic Four movie was hardly the success Fox hoped it would be. It was a bit of a rush job, made mostly because Fox had to do something with the property or the rights would revert to Marvel. But the movie tanked, both critically and financially, which was a disappointment to fans of the classic superhero team.
The Fantastic Four in Marvel Comics
The Fantastic Four were Marvel comics' dream team, back before the Avengers got popular. But in recent decades the team has started to feel a bit outdated, and Marvel was even forced to cancel their solo comic due to dropping sales. However, they have a dedicated fanbase, with many people hoping the team will return to their glory days.
And the
Inhumans movie slot might just be the chance for the Fantastic Four to rise again, as Fox could have a lot to gain from a collaborative deal with Disney on this front. It would be a surprise, to be sure, but keep an eye out for this — we might just get a good
Fantastic Four movie, yet!

Is This Why Inhumans Was Really Taken Off Marvel’s Slate?
By
Mark Cassidy
The other day, Kevin Feige
officially announced that Marvel’s
Inhumans movie would no longer be released on July 12th, 2019, and would not be given a replacement release date for the foreseeable future.
At the time, the reason provided was that due to the additions of
Spider-Man and
Ant-Man and the Wasp to Marvel’s already jam-packed Phase 3 slate, there was no more room for the film. However, Bleeding Cool believes that there was another factor that caused Feige to make this decision.
According to them,
Inhumans was actually an Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter pet project that Feige never really had any interest in and only agreed to get behind if they could also move forward with
Captain Marvel. The tumultuous relationship between these two Marvel execs is well documented, and last year they split, with Perlmutter relegated to TV involvement only.
So, if Bleeding Cool is correct, then Feige clearly felt he could get rid of the project without much hassle.
Inhumans could still get a new slot at some point, which would render all of this moot, but it looks like the only place we’ll be getting to see the Terrigen mist-altered beings for the time being is on
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Tell us, are you disappointed that
Inhumans won’t be with us in 2019, or did you never really care about the film to begin with? Let us know below!
