Zoe Saldana responds to the Nina Simone backlash: 'There's no one way to be black'

Since Zoe Saldana was cast as jazz legend Nina Simone in the biopicNina, the actress has faced backlash from fans, critics, and Simone's estate. In a new interview withAlluremagazine, she discussed the controversy in-depth, saying, "There's no one way to be black."

"I'm black the way I know how to be," she continued. "You have no idea who I am. I am black. I'm raising black men. Don't you ever think you can look at me and address me with such disdain."

Addressing criticism that she's too "pretty" to play Simone, Saldana remarked, "I never saw her as unattractive. Nina looks like half my family! But if you think the [prosthetic] nose I wore was unattractive, then maybe you need to ask yourself, What do you consider beautiful? Do you consider a thinner nose beautiful, so the wider you get, the more insulted you become?"

Despite the backlash, Saldana explained she's happy people are at least talking aboutNina. "The script probably would still be lying around, going from office to office, agency to agency, and nobody would have done it. Female stories aren't relevant enough, especially a black female story," she said. "I made a choice. Do I continue passing on the script and hope that the 'right' black person will do it, or do I say, 'You know what? Whatever consequences this may bring about, my casting is nothing in comparison to the fact that this story must be told."

She added, "The fact that we're talking about her, that Nina Simone is trending? We f---ing won. For so many years, nobody knew who the f--- she was. She is essential to our American history. As a woman first, and only then as everything else."

The backlash gained a second wind whenthe trailerforNinadebuted. Simone's estate tweeted to Saldana at the time, "Take Nina's name out your mouth. For the rest of your life."Ninadirector Cynthia Mort wasquick on the defense, saying, "Zoe gave an amazingly courageous and great performance. I think that's all that should matter."

Simone's daughter, Lisa Simone Kelly, also came to Saldana's defense. "It's unfortunate that Zoe Saldana is being attacked so viciously when she is someone who is part of a larger picture," she toldTime magazinein an interview. "It's clear she brought her best to this project, but unfortunately she's being attacked when she's not responsible for any of the writing or the lies."

Ninadistributor Robert L. Johnson also earlier addressed the controversy, likening the debate to the treatment of slaves. "It's unfortunate that African Americans are talking about this in a way that hearkens back to how we were treated when we were slaves. The slave masters separated light-skinned blacks from dark-skinned blacks, and some of that social DNA still exists today among many black people."

This chick is bugging man.

What makes her a white worshipping Dominican. She's one of the few Dominicans that reps being black-always.

1) not true. those of us familiar with her early comments know she was very reluctant to identify as black.
2) she must be the only 'proud black woman' that cops an attitude when the topic of her african heritage comes up. i mean compare her endless diatribes about there being ' more than one way to be black' with how an angela bassett or viola davis might answer.

Geez, guys.
Lighten up, already.
That's her life.
That's her truth.
I may not agree with her outlook on life but I have no particular problem with her.:dunno:
-So she was miscast for the Nina Simone film. It happens...:dunno:
-So her performance in the film was not well recieved. Oh, well. Move on... :dunno:
-So she's married to a White man. Big deal...:dunno:

Dudes here seem to just want to hate her, because they feel she not "representin'" Blacks the way THEY want her to.

At the end of the day, she's not a bootlicking sellout like Clarence Thomas, Jesse Lee Peterson or Larry Elder.

And she's 100% right. There is no ONE specific way to be Black...

Bitch needs to quit with the grandstanding like she wasn't doing this for a check. If she really cared about Nina Simone she would have rejected that stupid makeup and would have fought to tell a better story, about her genius and strength of Black identification, not just a "crazy Black bitch" piece.

Ummmm...... Sir..... There IS more than one way to be black.

I don't know if you ever noticed, but us black people on this very site disagree a WHOLE LOT about race matters, let alone many other things that are typically associated with racial culture. It would be impossible for even us on here to pick ONE way to be black, so how do you suppose that the ENTIRE African diaspora could somehow do it?

100% cosign.

If you look at EVERY Black person in a high profile position in society, virtually all of them have had their "blackness" questioned on this site at some point in the past.

Everyone from The President, to athletes, to politicians & celebrities have been referred to as being a coon, a sellout, an embarrassment or an agent at some point in the recent past. Often without it being deserved...:smh:

Far too many dudes here act like they wrote or contributed to "The Definative Book" of what is or is not acceptable "Black" behavior...:smh:

True

She is raising black men. Da fuck is your problem, op?

Because she's "Black" by convenience. And how the hell is she raising black men with a white husband/father...oh, wait, you're one of those white man love me betta than black man sell outs. Carry on. And happy fathers day.

Watched Nina the other night. the script could have been deeper like Ray, but Zoe did a good job. i did have to get over the markup. but it ain't blackface, if you black. the script did touch on the importance of Nina, her beliefs, her pain, experiences, her struggles good & bad. Like Zoe, the soundtrack is cuffable. Folks are being overly critical, probably their own issues. you can't regulate who she fucking, it ain't up to you and it ain't slap to your face cause she indulges in white men. get over it. she beautiful black woman and this racially demented world will constantly reminds her that she is black even though she may have wished she wasn't in her youth. she is still raising black kids. long ago, I let ago of my resentment of black women who court white men (or any other kind of man other than a black man). it ain't healthy, and you acting bitch-made. I must admit I won't fuck with a woman that dates white men, but I would make an exception for Zoe. judge me, n.f.g. Go head Zoe do you, wish we was fucking, but I glad you help put Nina back on my mind.

You make a good point

Notice, black people that promote gun violence, ghetto behavior, and negativity never have their "blackness" questioned.

Zoe, though seems to catch heat because she speaks on black issues but seems to be a bed wrench. Not saying she is, but she seems as such.

The part that kills me is that some of these Melinated non-Black Americans think their culture and nationality gives them diplomatic immunity against white supremacy. Little do they know when a white race soldier pulls your car over he doesnt care if you are Dominican, etc.....His rationale says that you are Black and you will be mistreated on behalf of that.

Saldana is on that French Montana shit..riding the fence.

A person cant serve 2 masters in the fight against RWS.
