Zika Virus: First Insect-Borne STD

An American biologist took a trip to Senegal to study malaria, and accidentally made "virological history," reports Science magazine, by transmitting an insect-borne virus after having sex with his wife upon return.

The biologist, Brian Foy, was collecting mosquitoes as part of the research -- and frequently getting bitten as a result. Foy became sick shortly after returning home to Colorado with the Zika virus -- a virus that causes joint pain, fatigue, and other recognizable symptoms. Days later his wife appeared to have developed the same illness. (His children, Science rightly points out, were fine.)

Foy wrote the whole thing up here, referring to himself as "patient 1" and his wife as "patient 3." (He later revealed the true identities to Science.)

This discovery marks what's most likely the first known case of sexually transmitted insect-borne disease. Science reports:

You guys amaze me with your stupidity and inability to read effectively. You saw what you wanted to see. The man did not get an STD. He was bitten by a mosquito that carried a virus. He found that that very same virus could be (meaning had the potential to be)transmitted sexually as well. But what caused was "joint pain" and "fatigue". Y'all stupid!:smh:

Health officials in Puerto Rico reported the island's first case of Zika, a mosquito-borne virus recently linked to the rise of a serious neurological disorder among newborns in Brazil.

"There is no reason for alarm, and the public should continue to take commonsense steps to avoid mosquito bites," Puerto Rican Congressman Pedro Pierluisi said in a statement on Thursday. He added that he expects experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to visit the island in early January to educate local physicians to "properly diagnose and treat the virus."

Brazil is currently facing a new problem: infants with smaller than expected head size. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported many babies are taking birth with microcephaly in Brazil and it’s a serious issue.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) of the South American country said the microcephaly problem could be linked to the Zika virus outbreak

Who would want to go to Puerto Rico right now anyway?
The government is broke and defaulting on loans.

How does a Mosquito borne virus have anything to do with white people or racism?

You need to stop it already with this troll line.
Any so called illness and/or disease that is affecting non-white people, white people have first hand information about it in regard to its origin and/or cure and/or there being no cure. Hence, context of racism/white supremacy.

The fallacy in your statement, as cock-wadded as it is, is that Puerto-Rico is overwhelmingly white.

It was colonized by Europeans.

Bruh, seek help.

Europeans are white people. Maybe i have been misinformed. And yeah, the system of global. White folk know more about any disease than non-white people even on the Afrikan continent. I.e. Ebola, Aids, Bird Flu, Malaria, etc. You name it.

A HUGE NEW TAINTED MMR VACCINE SCAM HAS SUDDENLY CAUSED THOUSANDS OF BABIES IN LATIN AMERICA TO BE BORN WITH FAR UNDERSIZED BRAINS

The new "Autism", titled "Microcephaly" has destroyed more than 2,400 Brazilian newborn babies en utero in only the past 2 months with ZERO DESTROYED IN THE MONTHS PRIOR and is stated to be caused when a pregnant mother is bitten by the mosquito carried African zika virus, which recently "made it's debut" in Brazil in 2015. But the pattern of symptoms does not match the virus which has been proven to have infected humans since 1954 and has never previously been associated with shrunken brains in newborn babies, nor does the geographic propagation pattern match the natural propagation pattern of a mosquito carried virus that would cause undersized brains in newborn babies if it really did exist.

This "shrunken brain" issue in newborns was just suddenly in Brazil as if someone flipped a switch, and the only way that could really happen is via the sudden arrival of a new brain destroying MMR vaccine, which all pregnant Latin American women are strongly encouraged to get before week 22 of pregnancy. This perfectly matches the probable arrival of the real culprit - a tainted MMR vaccine, which if administered in May (when this virus supposedly arrived) would be causing precisely the shrunken newborn baby brain problems Brazilians are having now, right on schedule.

Man in the Caribbean they have all types of mosquito transmitted diseases, and with my paranoid ass, the last time I was there I brought all types of anti mosquito protection just to be safe, funny because in spit of having all that shit I, not the people who lived down there, was the only one getting bit the fuck up...
All the other times I was down there and didn't give a fuck I hardly ever got bit, so you figure...

It's crazy that there is a 42 page thread on the Panthers/Seahawks game, but something as important as the next president of the USA only gets 1 page of comments
I like football as much as the next person but come on
Hardly no one on here was watching this or commenting about it

:smh::smh::smh:
:smh: I know. However, I blame the Democrats for having these debates on the worst timeslots though.

All we need is for the government to cover preventative, diagnostic, and other minor costs up to $10,000 to $20,000. Provide full coverage for people with limited income. We need to get rid of deductibles which people don't have with universal coverage in other countries.

The private insurance market can take over after that for any catastrophic illnesses.

Zika: Olympics plans announced by Rio authorities

The Brazilian authorities have announced plans to prevent the spread of the Zika virus during the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games later this year.

An outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease - which is being linked to severe birth defects - has caused growing concern in Brazil and abroad.

Inspections of Olympic facilities will begin four months before the Games to get rid of mosquito breeding grounds.

Daily sweeps will also take place during the Games.

But fumigation would only be an option on a case-by-case basis because of concerns for the health of the athletes and visitors.

The Brazilian health ministry says it is also banking on the fact that the Games are taking place in the cooler, drier month of August when mosquitoes are far less evident and there are considerably fewer cases of mosquito-borne viruses.

A British Olympic Association spokesperson said that it would be monitoring the situation over the coming months and its medical team had been liaising with specialists at the London School of Tropical Medicine.

The aim is to ensure that team members are "given the most up-to-date travel medicine advice, which includes information on bite prevention strategies," the spokesperson said.

"This information has already been shared with all sports and it will be continually updated prior to departure for the Olympic Games."

What is Zika virus?

Image caption Babies born with abnormally small heads may face lifelong difficulties
  • It is spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which also carries dengue fever and yellow fever
  • It was first discovered in Africa in the 1940s but is now spreading in Latin America
  • Scientists say there is growing evidence of a link to microcephaly, that leads to babies being born with small heads
  • While Zika virus can lead to fever and a rash, most people show no symptoms, and there is no known cure
  • The only way to fight Zika is to clear stagnant water where mosquitoes breed, and to protect against mosquito bites
The announcement by the Rio authorities comes amidst growing attention around the world over the large number of cases of Zika in the Americas.

Brazil has the largest-known outbreak of the virus which has been linked to a spike in birth defects in new-born babies whose mothers were bitten by the mosquito during pregnancy.

The US, Canada and EU health agencies have issued warnings saying pregnant women should avoid travelling to Brazil and other countries in the Americas which have registered cases of Zika.

El Salvador Advises Against Pregnancy Until 2018 in Answer to Zika Fears
SAN SALVADOR — Reacting to the rapid spread of the Zika virus in Latin America and the Caribbean, health officials in El Salvador are urging women not to get pregnant until 2018 in an effort to halt a surge of birth defects that are suspected to stem from the mosquito-borne disease.

The entire region has erupted with concern over the virus, and each country has taken measures to combat its spread. Other Latin American countries, such as Colombia and Ecuador, as well as Jamaica in the Caribbean, have recommended delaying pregnancies, though not for an entire two years.

The rest of Latin America has responded with different tactics, ranging from widespread fumigation efforts to directing citizens not to be bitten by the Aedes mosquito, which is known to carry yellow, chikungunya and dengue fevers.

So far, the hardest hit nation in the region has been Brazil, where more than a million cases have been confirmed, including nearly 4,000 cases of microcephaly in newborns that could be linked to Zika. Microcephaly is a rare, incurable condition in which an infant’s head is abnormally small.
El Salvador appears to have taken the most dramatic step so far, though the recommendation this week is not official policy. In a region that is largely Roman Catholic, the request has raised concern from the church, and many Salvadorans question the rationale for upending the national birthrate in order to counter the suspected effects of a virus.

Civil groups have also questioned the practicality of the recommendation, noting that in El Salvador pregnancies are often unplanned. Others say it is a testament to the lack of a coherent strategy from the government, and point to the difficulty of combating something as prevalent and evasive as the mosquito.

Salvadoran officials defended the measure in an interview.

“If we don’t make any recommendations to the population, we could have a high incidence of microcephaly,” said Eduardo Antonio Espinoza Fiallos, the vice minister of health. “Of those children, 99 percent will survive, but with limitations in their mental faculties.”

For most people, the effects of the Zika virus are mild. Symptoms are flulike and can last up to a week, with victims sometimes unaware that they have contracted the virus. Zika has no known cure.

But a recent spike in cases of microcephaly in infants has health experts worried that the condition could be the result of women contracting Zika while pregnant.

Rio and El Salvador ain't on the travel plans .

What about the Fukashima radiation on the West Coast ie Cali that are now highest levels . Y'all worried about down the road what about the toxic levels at home in Cali?
