It May Be Time for Lakers to part with Odom

The dream is dead. You guys know what the dream was. It was the dream that Lamar Odom would develop into Kobe’s Scottie Pippen. You see Kobe Bryant’s skill level and ability to dominate, and whether you like Kobe the man or not, you know that Kobe Bryant the basketball player is about as good as it gets. For 3 years now, with that fact realized, people have been waiting for Lamar Odom to fill the role of Scottie Pippen. In fact, it dates back further than 3 years. Lamar Odom came into the NBA as a 6’10 do it all forward from New York, a la the 6’7 Scottie Pippen. He was supposed to be a guy who you could build a team around for years to come. Fast forward to today and all Lamar Odom has been is a study in frustration for fans, media, and personnel guys alike. Oh, I’m a huge fan of Lamar Odom which is why I realize for Kobe Bryant to get back to the championship level his detractors think he will never see again, the Lakers have to look at Lamar Odom’s role and whether their expectations for him are realistic. It is my opinion that Lamar Odom will never develop into that consistent #2 option that a star needs for a team to be consistently great. As it stands now, Lamar Odom’s career averages are 15.8ppg and 6.8 rebounds. Solid numbers to be sure, but he is so much more than that. The frustrating thing about Lamar Odom is that the tools are there. As already stated he is 6’10 and can swing between the small and the big forward. He has the ability to push the ball up the court off of the rebound as well as be a finisher on the break. But none of this has translated into “greatness”. All we get is flashes of greatness. A move here or there that makes you wonder, why isn’t this guy a 20 point scorer in this league and consistently dominating games?

In the last 2 years, whether during the off-season or near the trade deadline, Lamar Odom’s name has surfaced in trade rumors. The most notable trade rumor has been in a package for Kevin Garnett. And to my confusion, the Lakers have held onto Odom as have mentioned him as one of their untouchable assets. This has always baffled me. Kevin Garnett, for all of his failures, is a bona fide great player. Say what you will about his post-season success, but one thing you can’t say about Garnett is that he is inconsistent or an underachiever. You know when you step out on the court with KG what you are going to get. You are going to get all out passion and consistent contributions on a nightly basis. The Lakers simply can not say that about Lamar Odom. You don’t know if you are going to get the Lamar Odom who is going to get you 18-20 points and 10 rebounds or the Odom who is going to play passively and barely impact the game. As I watch the Suns – Lakers series, it is quite evident that whether Kobe Bryant takes 31 shots or 13 shots that the Lakers simply can not compete because they lack another great player to play alongside Mr. Darth. What made the Bulls impossible to beat when Mike and the Bulls were running through the league is that you couldn’t just throw 3 guys at MJ without Pippen either scoring on you or making the play – consistently.

I almost feel guilty for injecting these thoughts about Lamar Odom because of the rough off-season he has had to endure last summer. Losing a family member let alone your own child has to be something far worse than devastating. I can not even fathom having to bury my infant son. So I say all of what I have said with respect to that situation. But in terms of basketball, he is more suited for a non-pressure role, a la the role he had in Miami in Dwayne Wade’s rookie year. In an indicting statement, Eddie Jones (yeah, that Eddie Jones) and Dwayne Wade were the primary scores and Lamar Odom was allowed just to fit in. The team winning or losing was not determined by whether he got 20 points. As a result, he has his best year as a pro in terms of individual and team success. As long as the Lakers tie themselves to Odom as their 2nd best player, they will continue to reap the same results. Kobe Bryant will continue to see 3 defenders with the other team demonstrating absolutely no fear in sending 2 extra defenders at Kobe Bryant because of a lack of another great player being on the same court as Kobe Bryant...........................

Yes I think that Odom Is a good player he came in the leauge with massive amounts of hype, but he never delivered like he should have some players are good and some players are great, He definately can play ball but he isn't scottie pippen who is easily 1 of the greatest players in all NBA history hands down, Jordan wouldn't have got as far as he did if it wasn't for Pippen His robin.

If Lamar could consistently produce about 20-25 points a game then the Lakers would be alot better. Kobe needs somebody cuz its sad to see him tryin so hard and then he got a trashy ass team that cant help. But oh well, I am a MAVS fan, fuck the Lakers.

One of the problems is He plays out of position. He is a SF not a PF. If the lakers had a PF that could rebound and play d he would help alot. Luke walton should be the six man off the bench.

You're No Scottie Pippen: Should fakers Get Rid of Odom"

the fakers SHOULD get rid of lamar odom. if they're not going to do the CORRECT thing and bench tobe (or trade him to some foolish team that might actually want him), then by all means, they should give lamar odom his freedom.

nobody deserves to be trapped on the sinking ship known as the fakers, forced to watch your own demise with the league's best saboteur and poison pill, JAVIER RODRIGUEZ.

note the distinction coach d'antoni made yesterday:

Said Suns Coach Mike D'Antoni, "I don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves…. We have just held serve…. Anytime you have Kobe [Bryant] or Lamar Odom on the court, you know it's never going to be easy."

Of course he said it. Divide and conquer. C'mon rab, you're smarter than this homie. :smh: :smh:

Just like coaches always complained about Motumbo's elbows, Divacs flops, Shaqs hop step, and Wades blinding pink lips.

i understand it very well. in fact, i smirked when i first read it. but then i considered it for a moment, and when you figure that lamar odom is the fakers:

leading rebounder in the playoffs
leading shot blocker in the playoffs
second leading scorer in the playoffs

it's not REALLY propaganda after all.

yeah, tobe is the fakers leading scorer, but then that's not really all that surprising when you account for the fact that he's taken more than 1.5 times more FGAs than the next closest teammate.

Re: "You're No Scottie Pippen: Should Lakers Get Rid of Odom" C. Turner BlackSportsOn

Or the fact that Kobe dials it down and the "greatest basketball franchise in the history of the NBA"™ loses by 30.

I'm gonna defend Odom! As someone said earlier, he had a lot of hype when he came into the league from URI, but he will consistently get a team 16pts/11rebs/5asst a night! I'm Laker fan from waaaay back ('75) and it's a shame watching him play alongside Kobe, when it could've easily been Shaq! With Kobe's whining and having Dr. Buss' ear, there went Shaq! The bad thing is, they have no one of trade value (besides Odom) and does any other veteran want to even play WITH Kobe?

Re: "You're No Scottie Pippen: Should Lakers Get Rid of Odom" C. Turner BlackSportsOn

I know somebody in L.A. who knows Odom and they ask him about Kobe and he said fuck a Kobe  . Real talk no B.S.!
Even though many players in the NBA dream of playing in L.A. most of them, including most of Kobe's teammates, can't stand him!

wade as a rookie got further in the playoffs with lamar odom than a supposedly mature kobe has so far. kobe is the best offensive player in the game no question, but he isn't utilizing lamar properly.

Odom is like KG. Sure he cant you nearly a triple double every night and his defense is good, but he should be more agressive. Demand the ball.

I know somebody in L.A. who knows Odom and they ask him about Kobe and he said fuck a Kobe

If thats the way he feels, make it known and maybe Kobe will see the light (finally) and start to play the way he should. I would hate to see Odom go, but IMO, he just needs to be more agressive on offense, that's it.

Re: "You're No Scottie Pippen: Should Lakers Get Rid of Odom" C. Turner BlackSportsOn

They can get rid of Odom if they want. Then the team will truly be exposed.

The article writer has failed to mention that without Odom starting, the fakers are only 15-31 since he joined the team.

I do agree with the statement that Odom < Pippen, because Wobe is < Pippen as well.

Re: "You're No Scottie Pippen: Should Lakers Get Rid of Odom" C. Turner BlackSportsOn

Odom sucks for his height,he dosen't block shots, get boards. No defense at all.Watch the next time they play,he just puts his hands straight up in the air.Jump up and block the shot!!That whole laker team sucks, besides kobe the rest of them look like they have no clue what they suppose to be doing out there! Nash runs the same play everytime pick and roll laker players just be lost out there.GET RID OF ALL THEM!!

Word. I wouldnt ditch them all though. But Kwame looks like a bust to me. He just dont care about shit.(Thanks Mike Jordan)
Did you hear the announcers actin like the Suns were goin buck wild? Fuckin Odom and Walton standing there in the paint watchin dudes run around them. Mufuckas never heard of boxin out? In fairness they arent 100% though but even if they were last year's playoffs would have been murder too if Amare was around and Barbosa played like he is now.

How the fuck can Tush Parker not guard Garbosa(as in can't even run along side him)? shit is pathetic
