If you don't know anything about cars you'd have to go with what the mechanic tells you.

I remember back when I didn't know shit about cars the dealer sold me on needing brand new calipers and rotors on a brand new car that didn't even have 6000 miles on it, and it wasn't metal to metal.

And on the tire thing there are sport tires that are directional and can be placed on the car wrong.

This call was bullshit of course but anyone can get over on someone who just doesn't know.
