Rumor has it that the New York Yankees are set to go to battle for the services of Mark Teixiera. Rather have him fall into the laps of the Boston Red Sox or the Los Angeles Angels, they are willing to pay the BIG BUCKS to get him in a Yankee uniform. The bidding is expected to hover around $200M---that's A-Rod money!
And speaking of A-Rod. It's expected that Teixiera will press Rodriquez for batting honors, thereby increasing A-Rod's output. In addition, Teixiera will be ideal for the #3 or #5 slots in the line-up. He's a first baseman, and will replace recently acquired Nick Swisher at the corner. IF, the Yankees get him! And that's a big 'IF'.
It will also mean that the Yankees will only get one more starter-Lowe or Burnett, not both or two. By getting only one, they'll have extra maoney--which may be needed--to sign Teixiera.
Swisher will probably be traded to another team, thus saving even more money.
One thing that is certain in the 'Free Agent" market, is that 'things' are not always what they seem to be. This 'rumor' coulkd be based on 'wishful' thinking and dreams. The bottom line: It's fun and free!!
As a child growing up in Maryland, Teixiera was a 'rabid' Yankee fan. He wore a jersey with the number #23 on it (everybody thought it was for Michael Jordan, but Mattingly had the same #) in honor of former Yankee coach and player, Don Mattingly. Maybe that bit of naustalgia will get the Yankees a discount. Probably not.
