Yankees enjoy big payback in blowout win over the Red Sox

They didn't want a pitchers' duel Thursday night at the new Yankee Stadium, they didn't want to see Mo Rivera, didn't want any drama. They wanted a beatdown and they wanted payback and that is exactly what they got, first off a shell of a once-great pitcher named John Smoltz and then against Billy Traber, who was in the minors a few days ago. The Yankees didn't make 0-8 against the Red Sox completely go away Thursday night. It just seemed that way after they went into the bottom of the fourth trailing 3-1 and came out of it winning 9-3, after the Yanks hung an eight on them. The Yankees didn't just beat the Red Sox Thursday night, they threw them through a window.

That is the headline for the night, the night when the Yankees finally got a game off the Red Sox, taking until the first Thursday in August to do that, an all-time world's record for this rivalry. That is the headline even though six more home runs were hit at the $1.5 billion Homer Depot on the other side of 161st St., a place that sometimes seems to have the same exact home-run dimensions as the skating rink at Rockefeller Plaza, that makes even Fenway Park seem as big as Central Park.

Dustin Pedroia went deep for the Red Sox, and so did Casey Kotchman. Old John Damon hit his 20th for the Yankees, and his 13th at the Homer Depot. Jorge Posada hit one between the ambulance entrance and Monument Park. Melky Cabrera went deep, so did Mark Teixeira, who hit his 28th, and his 18th at the Homer Depot. It is supposed to be the grandest address in baseball and all of sports, 161st and River Ave. And balls fly out of this place the way they do at the Little League park in your town.

And you know something? Yankee fans, who showed up in big enough numbers to provide the second sellout of the season - it didn't take until the first Thursday in August to get the second sellout of the season across the street, just two home games the first week of the season - didn't care about any of that. Don't care. Won't care if the Yankees keep winning. Their team is in first, and getting better. Their team has gone 15-5 since the All-Star break. The Red Sox are 8-11. The Red Sox don't get to think about passing the Yankees right now, not the way they've been playing. They have to worry about getting passed by the Tampa Bay Rays.

All of a sudden, the Red Sox look as if they needed Roy Halladay more than the Yankees did, even more than they needed the extra stick Victor Martinez gives them. All of a sudden, the last three guys in their rotation are Clay Buchholz, who sometimes looks like the most over-evaluated pitching prospect Boston has, and Brad Penny, and Smoltz, whose earned-run average is now 8.32. Thursday night the lefthanded hitters in the Yankee batting order were 9-for-13 against Smoltz before Terry Francona came to get him. He looked old and he looked washed up, and you wonder how much longer Boston stays with him.

The 'highlights' had me jumping outta of my seat, and shouting, "lay it to 'em"!!! If the Yanks never win another game in this current series, they'll still be in first place upon its completion. But that's not likely to happen.

Every body agrees that this team is NOT --even remotely-- similar to the team that Boston played earlier this season. For that matter, Boston is not the same team either, and the team's swagger is not as imposing.

Hell, the Red Sox may not even get the 'wild card'....I hope.

Robbie Cano best all around 2B in baseball. If he had stolen base speed, he would be the best period

WHOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA !!!

You have heard or Ian Kinsler, Aaron Hill, Chase Utley, Dustin Pedroia, Brian Roberts, Kelly Johnson just to name a few. Cano isnt even in the top 10 second basemen.

He's gotta point.Lacks consistency, among other things.

Of those dudes, which can match Cano in the field?? Maybe Hill that's it. The problem is all you read was "best" and you ran with it. "All around" means 360 degrees of the game not just HRs, RBI and batting average. Cano brings intangibles that cannot be measured by numbers. Not a name on your list I'd take over Cano in the field

There are 2nd baseman that can match Robinson Cano in the field, but cannot do what he does at the plate. Then there are 2nd sackers with better offensive output than him, but those guys are nowhere near him fielding wise. Aaron Hill may just be a one hit wonder (a la Jack Wilson) and Kelly Johnson LOST his starting job outright this season to Martin Prado. You can even mention him in the same sentence. You mentioned Kinsler, but after his hot start, he hasn't done shit offensively since the beginning of June plus has limited range in the field to boot. Despite not being fast, Cano gets to ALOT of balls that would be hits and takes much pressure off jeter up the middle. He does just about everything well (except run) and plays on an even keel that's why he doesn't get alot of pub, but he's been indispensible for NY this season

And despite what you may think, he is the MODEL of consistency with the glove as well as the bat. Dude's average has flucuated between .295 and .315 all season long. No long ups and no long downs.

Ian Kinsler is hands down the best all around 2nd baseman, with Roberts and Utley close behind him. Seriously I would take Alexi Ramirez or Howie Kendrick over Cano.

You cant say he is a better fielder than Kinsler they have about the same life time fielding percentage somewhere between .985 and .995, plus Kinsler adds power as well as speed on the base paths, his average is a little lower this season than last, but look at his OBP. @ .350 still and 63 RBI, this for a guy that hasnt hit well all season.

Believe me if the Yanks had a chance to trade Cano for Kinsler, they would do it. Dont let the Yank love cloud your judgement.

since i am a phillies fan i will compare your boy to utley
just looking at this years stats
both bat around 300 utley a little below cano a little above
obp utley=.415 Cano=.349
slugging utley=.529 Cano=.500
stolen bases utley 13 0 caught Cano 4 5 times caught
Utley HR/RBI 23/72 Cano 16/57
Cano has a better fielding percentage than Utley
So besides him having a slightly higher batting average and a better fielding percentage the stats say he is far from the best. So what are you using to base your analysis on?

I hate repeating myself....I really do, but I will do it this once.

I NEVER SAID CANO WAS THE BEST SECOND BASEMAN. Read the statement, I said ALL AROUND. There is a difference. If you don't know what it means I'm not going to explain it.

Steve Garvey has the highest fielding percentage of any 1B, but is he the best fielder? Cal Ripken's % is higher than Ozzie Guillen's, but it ain't even close whose better in the field. But I ain't trying to tear down another mans' game to build another ones' up. Not my writing style. Believe what you want, I stand behind my statement. Will take Cano over ANY of those cats mentioned in the field. And I bet Jeter would too. Not saying RC is the BEST fielder, but he is better in the field (and getting better) than any of those guys mentioned (except for MAYBE Aaron Hill) and is better at bat than any of the BEST fielding second baseman (the Polancos, the Hudsons, the Scutaros, etc).

I actually like Kinsler, have him on a couple of fantasy squads, but he had a hot April and May and has tailed off considerably the past two months. Now if ANYBODY has been inconsistent, it's him. He's decent in the field, but has been helped somewhat by Elvis Andrus replacing Michael Young at shortstop. Cano fields his position well and turns the DP with the best of them. Makes all the difference in the world to a shaky pitching staff when you have a reliable guy you know can get you out of a jam with his glove. It's INTANGIBLES like that that are shaping my opinion of him
