Two U.S. Navy Sailors Missing Off Coast of Somalia​

Two Navy sailors are missing at sea off the coast of Somalia, U.S. Central Command said via a statement Friday.
Search and rescue operations are currently ongoing, according to the statements. Additional details, including the ship the sailors were on or their names, have not yet been released. The sailors were forward-deployed to U.S. 5th Fleet, according to the statement.
The U.S. has been operating more ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden over the last two months following a steady steam of attacks from Houthi forces in Yemen starting on Oct. 17.
Here’s the complete Central Command statement:
On the evening of January 11, two U.S. Navy Sailors were reported missing at sea while conducting operations off the coast of Somalia. Search and rescue operations are currently ongoing to locate the two sailors. For operational security purposes, we will not release additional information until the personnel recovery operation is complete.
Out of respect for the families affected, we will not release further information on the missing personnel at this time.
The sailors were forward-deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet (C5F) area of operations supporting a wide variety of missions.

️ The SEALs were on an interdiction mission, climbing up a vessel when one got knocked off by high waves. Under their protocol, when one SEAL is overtaken the next jumps in after them.

️ Both SEALs are still missing. A search and rescue mission is underway and the waters in the Gulf of Aden, where they were operating, are warm, two of the U.S. officials said.

️ The U.S. Navy has conducted regular interdiction missions, where they have intercepted weapons on ships that were bound for Houthi-controlled Yemen.

️ The mission was not related to Operation Prosperity Guardian, the ongoing U.S. and international mission to provide protection to commercial vessels in the Red Sea, or the retaliatory strikes that the United States and the United Kingdom have conducted in Yemen over the past two days, the official said Saturday. It was also not related to the seizure of the oil tanker St. Nikolas by Iran, a third U.S. official said.

️ Besides the defense of ships from launched drones and missiles shot from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, the U.S. military has also come to the aid of commercial ships that have been the targets of piracy.

I called my best friend who was an operator and asked how SEALs as the best trained maritime SpecOps could go missing. He gave nearly this exact explanation ,about the seas off of Somalia, and how maritime interdiction is crazy risky. God be with them SEALs and their families. Thanks Chad for the great breakdown.

I understand what your saying,but part of their training includes being weighed down with a full kit and working in extreme environments. The only reason why I'm not understanding it fully because we don't usually hear about actual full-blown seals drowning during missions. so is this an anomaly or is this a common thing we don't really hear about.

I stress actual SEALS because I have heard about a number of training accidents involving drowning because the BUDS instructors were signalling out folks they wanted to quit.
